Description

This book is ideal for beginners, improvers and those serious about growing tasty, healthy organic fruit and vegetables. It will empower readers to grow food for a family, and help work out how to get the best results. Many books give sowing and growing instructions for a multitude of crops, but few give space to the techniques and tips that make gardening easier and that help anyone to grow healthy, sustainable food.
Some of the techniques are developed from Joyce’s own trials and observations; others are classic techniques that are still useful now. With a bit more detail, and a step-by-step project, a technique becomes much easier to follow and understand.
There’s something here for everyone: whether you grow in a small back yard and want to know how to raise salad in buckets, or if you have a large allotment where you want to improve pollination, or make your own liquid feeds.
The book makes several promises to its readers. Firstly, by following its advice you will grow great fruit and vegetables. Next, the knowledge you gain will save you time as well as money. Third, you'll enjoy the gardening journey and the discoveries made along the way. Fourth, you'll find greener and cleaner ways of doing things, and you'll improve your skills, methods and habits.
Find out how to rotate your vegetables so they stay healthy and well-fed, to preserve choice crops for the freshest taste, to improve the soil organically and sustainably, and to produce home made fertiliser from the leaves of your comfrey crop.

I loved this book. So much to take in and learn, and so many projects that are just perfect for autumn. Loved how it explains everything from how to prepare your soil, to saving seeds and planting, and even the best type of trellis to use for different plants.

This is a fabulous veggie planting guide for someone like me who tries lots, but has many misses. Now I know why!

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review. !

Thanks to the publisher for an ARC to read and give my honest opinion.

This book houses common garden techniques and trial vs. error ways that let you see how the author has combatted issues with growing a garden crop. I would not say these were new techniques per say but the author's dedication to cause and effects of her own personal discovery in gardening.

What did I like? I first loved the handmade basket, that let's you hang or sit strawberries or tomatoes of a vine. This was a DIY project as well as many other projects such as a liquid feed barrel, or raised beds, or growing potatoes in a sack. The author also showed how to plait garlic, and tie up onions. A ton of great ideas if your planting big or small. Some parts of the book also take gardening to a science, like with pH levels, and level's of composting. It's really informative and I believe beginner's will love the demonstrations, and projects.

Would I buy this book? Yes, it's informative enough that it would give you some lovely idea's for a garden big or small. It has lovely illustrations, and easy DIY projects. Great for beginner's or anyone struggling with gardening.

Thoughts for the author? This was a fun book, and I hope to make some of the fun projects! Great idea's! Five fun stars of entertainment!

New Vegetable Garden Techniques by gardening expert and educator Joyce Russell is a technique and theory gardening manual covering a skills based troubleshooting system for improving yields and results for the home gardener.

Released 16th April 2019 by Quarto on their White Lion imprint, it's 192 pages and available in flexibound paperback and ebook formats.

The book includes tutorial chapter containing 23 projects. These range from very simple and quickly executed (microgreens), to more involved (handmade hanging baskets from found materials). All are gardening related. The tutorials are gathered into 4 sections: getting started, improving soil, better produce and better harvests. Each main section also includes generalized information relating to the subject.

There is a glossary and index included and the eARC version of the book includes an interactive table of contents, which is handy.

The photography is well done and supports and illustrates the text very well. The tutorials are clear and easy to follow. The information contained in the book is general in nature, there is no discussion about hardiness zones or micro-climates, and will be appropriate for gardeners in most temperate regions.

Four stars.

Informative and inspirational gardening book with tutorials on everything from digging beds to making your own liquid plant food. Tons of photos to help explain the steps and show the really cool finished products. Bookmarked several to try.

This book does what it says on the tin.
It contains countless techniques (most of which I would call projects) many of which were novel, at least to me. The techniques are summarized in a few pages and many of them seemed quite useful at least to beginner/intermediate gardeners. This book won't be your only gardening book but it is a useful addition.

As an avid vegetable gardener, I really enjoyed reading this book. I have other very good books that give detailed information on growing specific vegetables (Joy Larkcom and Charles Dowding are my favourites) so I was happy to read a book that gives more general advice and project-focussed tips.

Divided into 4 chapters, the book covers starting a new vegetable garden, better soil, better produce and better harvest. The book is easy to read and would be enjoyed by both novice and experienced gardeners: clearly set out with lots of informative tables and photographs. For example the section on boosting pollination included a great table listing plants, pollination methods, problems and how to help.

Each chapter includes cost-saving projects to make at home – for example support systems for climbing plants. It gives general ideas, with photos, (twigs, bamboo canes, mesh fencing, string etc) then goes on to describe in detail how to make a sturdy bean frame using bamboo cane, with photos to illustrate each step.

My only small quibble is in the title – I don’t think any of the techniques in the book are “new” – but that doesn’t stop them from being really useful and interesting!

From tried and true vegetable growing tips to the author's own, there is a fine amount of information here for experienced gardeners and beginners alike. From soil improvement to homemade fertilizer, a valuable resource for growing your own healthy veggies.

This is a really informative gardening book that's filled with great tips and information for novice gardeners and experienced gardeners alike to make gardening easier and more successful. It's filled with photos showing the author actually doing the steps involved, which I really appreciate in this age of generic stock photos.

I'm an experienced gardener and read a ton of gardening books so I'm pretty familiar with garden tips and advice. I didn't expect to pick up anything new but I did find some interesting new projects and techniques here. With great information from a knowledgeable author and lots of charts and photographs.

My rating system:
1 = hated it
2 = it was okay
3 = liked it
4 = really liked it
5 = love it, plan to purchase, and/or would buy it again if it was lost

I read a temporary digital ARC of the book for the purpose of review., this would be an especially good book for folks who are fairly new to gardening.

An excellent, comprehensive look at gardening techniques for beginners. As someone who has been gardening for about a decade, most of the info was repetitive for me, but I absolutely loved the photo-heavy layout. Everything that's explained is accompanied by beautiful photography making this a book I wish I'd had when I started out gardening!

A good book for beginner and intermediate gardeners. Some good information about building your gardening beds and pots. The special projects included were interesting, but seemed a little random. Photos were very nice and appealing. Overall, a good gardening book. *I received an ebook ARC from NetGalley and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Informative, well illustrated, lots of tips and techniques for any gardener. Would be a great resource for the beginning or intermediate level gardener, however, it also has items that might appeal to the experienced gardener also!

New Vegetable Garden Techniques is a great book for beginners like myself. It is written in a format that is easy to follow. Great projects to try after the summer ends.

I was provided this book free of charge in exchange for my honest opinion.

I highly recommend this book for anyone new to gardening or as a refresher - 5 star ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Joyce Russel wants to help you. After years of gardening, and the success and failures which come with that, she's learned a thing or two and hopes to get you to the successes faster - maybe skipping the failures?
This is a book to make you get up and do things. Each chapter comes with projects to put its principles in action - you're not only told how to do something, but encouraged to get into the garden & actually do it. I liked the projects on how to make soil-enriching fertiliser from my own comfrey & seaweed, and how to fit a salad crop into spaces only big enough for a bucket. A good table on identifying what nutrients your soil might be missing, based on your plants leaves, was something I hadn't seen in other gardening books.
On the whole, though, there wasn't enough here for me to recommend it as a must-have. It will be useful to those who read it, but not distinctive enough to make it to the top of my list.

White Lion Publishing and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of New Vegetable Garden Techniques: Essential skills and projects for tastier, healthier crops. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.

New Vegetable Garden Techniques is a must have gardening tome for beginners, as it is a comprehensive guide regarding everything from techniques to projects. Starting your own garden can be a daunting task, but the author does a good job of explaining the steps necessary for success. I particularly liked how literally no stone was left unturned, that the author explained everything from the basic knowledge through the more complicated. Whether a novice with a small deck or an expert with acres to fill, New Vegetable Garden Techniques is designed to help all master gardening as organically as possible.

The projects were fun and range from easy ones like hanging baskets to more involved tasks like planning and executing a raised bed. I could definitely see myself accomplishing many of the projects and plan to try some in the future. Overall, I liked how the author included photographs throughout, inspiring readers to try some of the projects and techniques. I would recommend New Vegetable Garden Techniques to readers who want to try their hand at gardening or who want to be inspired to try something new.
