The Rise and Fall of the Traditional Theories of Creation, and Community the Divine Idea of Creation

Many persons believe that God has created everything that is. I do not disagree with them but I am not satisfied with this generality.

There is no thought and no guidance in this belief. We have endured 300 years since the revolutionaries of modern science began their dismemberment of the Greek cosmos that had endured for 2,000 years. We now have no theory of creation.

The Hebrew cosmos and the Greek cosmos made up the traditional theories of creation for the western world. Since many have forgotten this history, I summarize it before venturing into my proposal for a new theory of creation.

Those who recall this history can skip this material and begin with the chapter on Claudius Ptolemy. Our universe and the ancient universe are vastly different. The ancient universe was static. It was thought to have no history.

Our universe is dynamic. It has a history.

Harold Morowitz has identified 28 emergences of new complexity in our universe[1]. I propose a new theory of creation.

I give four arguments for community as cosmos based on the statements of four great thinkers: Plato, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, and Michael Sandell. These thinkers do not propose community as cosmos, they do identify community as a central process in human affairs.I refer the reader to my book for a fuller elaboration of my theory of creation.

The Universe and Human Purpose Redefined, June 18, 2018

What purpose can life have in a world of fading faiths and a chaotic big bang creation? Must we seek answers from a TV guru? Or should one turn to a philosophic tome? David Shaw has provided a persuasive definition of purpose, but not in a tome. His work, strikingly concise, presents his views in way that can be grasped by a public with no special interest in philosophy. His work is not only scrupulously reasoned, but lucid. (Whether or not readers are seeking for a clearer sense of purpose, they should find compelling Shaw’s lively account of science as it shatters our common sense of stability.) Having described the unsettling impact of a whirling universe on the human soul and psyche, he turns to a means of resolution. For Shaw, unquestioned belief in a stable universe has often atrophied the human energy to reason. Provided by the Creative Spirit, reason appears to be a key to human purpose.

Though I could continue, I think it would be a shame to deprive the reader of the intellectual suspense in following Shaw’s path to a vision of community, the individual’s meaningful role within it, and a convincing call for action.
