Advance Praise

“I am so weary of the peculiar therapeutic atmosphere in which we live today that is scared stiff to tell anybody to do anything or to warn anybody of dangerous consequences of failing to take responsibility for his or her life. So to find someone taking seriously the biblical call for ‘agonizing to enter the kingdom’ and striving like a gymnast to become godly and boxing and sweating like a champion to get victory over sin is the most refreshing thing I could have set my eyes on.”
John Piper, Founder and Teacher, desiringGod.org; Chancellor, Bethlehem College & Seminary; author, Desiring God

“Every Christian man, whether a new believer or a mature Christian, will be challenged again and again by this remarkably wise and fascinating book. Kent Hughes skillfully weaves together the teachings of Scripture with real-life examples as he powerfully teaches us what true Christian manhood looks like in the ordinary details of our lives. I highly recommend this update of a book that is becoming a Christian classic.”
Wayne Grudem, Distinguished Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary; author, Christian Ethics

“Discipline is a subject about which the Scriptures say much—but contemporary authors have been peculiarly silent. Kent Hughes fills a gaping void with this superb volume. You’ll be challenged and encouraged as you read. And if there is a spark of spiritual desire in your soul, this book will surely kindle it into a blazing passion for godly discipline.”
John MacArthur, Pastor, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, California; President, The Master’s University and Seminary

“There are some books, though very few, that remain ‘evergreen’—that through the years remain as useful and challenging as the day they were written. There’s little doubt that Disciplines of a Godly Man is one of these. For that reason, I’m delighted to see it just so slightly refreshed as it’s prepared to challenge a whole new generation of men with its biblical principles and timeless wisdom. I trust it will prove itself as edifying to them as it has to me and so many others.”
Tim Challies, blogger, Challies.com

“The best contemporary book of spiritual guidance I’ve read in a long time. Usually for this type of food I have to look for a book that is at least seventy-five years old. This book is a surprising exception. And it has the added advantage of being very relevant to specific needs in today’s world.”
Ajith Fernando, Teaching Director, Youth for Christ, Sri Lanka; author, Discipling in a Multicultural World

“This is one of the best books I’ve read. What an outstanding volume! I guarantee: Digest this book and you will bid the blahs farewell.”
Charles Swindoll, pastor; best-selling author

This updated edition speaks directly to the contemporary cultural influences that undermine many good men's attempts to live Godly lives, such as the prevalence of pornography, social acceptance of sexual immorality, gender confusion, the insidious influence of video games, and more. Using Scripture along with examples of accomplished athletes, artists, and leaders, Hughes reminds his readers of what a truly Godly man's life looks like: discipline, commitment, compassion, strength and faith. The study questions at the end of each chapter are a great review of the topic covered, as well as great discussion and/or prayer starters, making this book an ideal choice for a Christian men's group study. Clearly, the author understands how men are attacked, tempted and denigrated in today's 'politically correct' climate, making this book a valuable encouragement to men to uncover/recover their God-given gifts to benefit both themselves and others.
Though I originally thought this was going to be a book about prayer and spiritual discipleship for everyone, I really appreciated getting an insight into men's situation today. Much of what Hughes writes is also applicable to women in terms of the value of discipline in life, however, and is a good reminder of the need for discipline and commitment for anyone seeking to live a Christian life. Ladies, give this book to your man to support him as he grows in virtue!
I was furnished a free ecopy of this book in exchange for my objective review. Thank you, Netgalley!

As you all know I like to read my husband´s books. My dh R has been part of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences, R. Kend Huges, the author of this book, is the founder! (in case you don´t know) the conferences are available throughout North America and worldwide. Other pastors, I respect recommend that training too. Since he told me it was good material, I didn´t hesitate to dive into this book. As you know WE READ A LOT, but I do not write a review on every book we take... just the ones I´m thankful about. This one is priceless. I am challenged in the way I live my spiritual life. One thing you may find useful is the study guide because it will give you the opportunity to study with others (I truly appreciate when authors add that bonus! an when they add resources for further growth, they help me to pick my next book, my wishlist is growing, and growing) It is a very user-friendly book. Hopefully, someday soon a local group will start this study and grow as a godly man. Even when this book is for man, I think if a woman reads it she will be encouraged to pray for the man and to grow in the discipline as well. I´m grateful for Crossway and this practical and biblical resources, they encourage me in my walk with Christ. Part 3 and 6 were my favorite because I need to focus on my soul, mind, and consistency. R. Kent Hughes challenged me to a more disciplined life, "no sweat, no sainthood".
You can pre-order now, you won´t regret. Release day is July 30th.

Disciplines of a Godly Man by R. Kent Hughes is a book that I have been wanting to pick for a long time. The book has been around for over a decade and highly recommended among many church leaders. Crossway has now an updated version of the book available along with study questions for those who are doing a group study or your own personal growth.

In this book, Hughes addresses the issue that men in our day are not disciplined. There are a number of reason for what he does go into great detail. He also expresses that men are on a spiritual decline where women are growing more spiritually then they are. While we can rejoice that women in the church are growing spiritually, we also must be concerned that the men in the church are not. The church in America, as Hughes puts it, needs real men and I agree. The church needs men who will lead, grow spiritually, love their families, and stand for truth. Contrary to what Feminism says, women in the church desire to see men stand up for Christ and take charge.

The rest of the book deals with the discipline of a man in every area of their lives. The first is in relationships. We must have discipline to be husbands and fathers. We also must be disciplined in purity where we seek to be holy in our words and actions in our relationships. Next, we must be disciplined in our spiritual growth. We need to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ as 2 Corinthians 10 tells us. We also desire prayer and worship in our spiritual growth.

Hughes goes on to address our character that we must be men of integrity and men who do their jobs well. We also must be disciplined in ministry where we are ready to serve in our churches. Not every Christian is called to vocational ministry, by we are all called to be involved in ministry. We are also called to be a witness as well. Christ commands the church to make disciples. The church need men who are disciplined who will be able to make disciples.

There is so much in this book that it might take a few posts to address them. I am grateful that I had the chance to read this book and hope to read it again with a small group of men as we seek to be the men that the church needs.
