Description

The primary theme of this book centers on a memoir of the tumultuous aviationn career of a fun-loving, free-spirited, adventuresome pilot. A secondary theme involves a plethora of unique and improbable aviation anecdotes that will leave the reader slack-jawed in amazement. One additional theme sheds light on the darker side of commercial aviation: fatigue in the cockpit. The narrative relates numerous incidents and includes discussions of the current front-and-center safety issue regarding pilot fatigue

The Rogue Aviator reveals numerous, rarely visited venues "in the back alleys of aviation." Ventures such as "The Bataan Death March" across a subzero tarmac in ankle-deep snow during a Midwest blizzard at Chicago's O'Hare Airport or threatening harassment by the Bogotá police will be offset by weekends in a Caribbean resort or playing golf at Old St. Andrews in Scotland.

The depiction of life in the non-sked world of startup airlines and fly-by-night freight airlines will describe the historic aviation site known as "corrosion corner" at MIA and the Emery Airfreight hub at Dayton, Ohio. The reader will get a peek at the glamorous lifestyle of a professional pilot as well as being exposed to the dark-side nuances of the life of a professional pilot.

This insider's perspective of a professional pilot's exposure to the back alleys of commercial aviation will reveal a roller-coaster-like ride that is both entertaining and informative. Ace's unstable career resulted in numerous oscillations between the aviation penthouse and the aviation outhouse. Spiced with humor, The Rogue Aviator is complemented with occasional sketches of pathos and poignancy. Captain Abbott's story also contains a smattering of decadence and debauchery.

Finally, The Rogue Aviator takes an insider's look at commercial aviation and the FAA. With today's focus on aviation safety and the role of the FAA to insure our safety in the air, the author addresses his thoughts on these vital areas.

Fasten your seat belt and hang on!

A Note From the Publisher

Ace Abbott spent his youth on a hardscrabble-farm in Upstate New York. Upon graduation from college at SUNY (Cortland) in 1965 he entered the U.S Air Force and became an F-4 Phantom fighter pilot based in the Far East. In 1971 he left the Air Force and became a Learjet charter pilot in South Florida. The next eight years he was a Learjet Captain in many diverse and challenging situations, including extensive operations in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In 1980, through a fortuitous bounce of the airplane employment ball, he became a Boeing 727 Captain. The next 22 years, until mandatory retirement at age 60, Ace was employed as a 727 Captain with several airlines during the unstable airline post-deregulation era. His 727 experiences took him to most of the countries in Latin America, The Caribbean, and included an assignment to Cairo, Egypt and Malta. Ace retired in 2002 after travelling to 44 countries with 25 employer changes.
Ace has now returned to his roots in the scenic Finger Lakes of Central New York where he keeps busy with book marketing activities which include: book presentations at aviation events, airshows (including the Oshkosh Air Show as a featured author), fly-in pancake breakfast events, along with events at book clubs, libraries and book stores. He is a “snowbird” and spends his winters in Delray Beach, Florida where he also stays busy with book promotion activity. When The Rogue Aviator makes the NY Times best seller list he intends to return to the golf course.

Q&A & interviews: I have done more than 30 radio interviews and the most recent interview is available on an MP3 tour schedules: Major surgery has resulted in a shortened spring tour but on April 14, 15,16,17 I will be doing a Central Florida book tour that will include presentations at MacDill AFB, Central Florida Chapter of Women in Aviation, EAA Chaptrer 74 in Orlando, Sun ‘n Fun Air Show in Lakeland and The top of The World in Orlando.

[I just finished ROGUE. SIMPLY EXTRAORDINARY…SPELLBINDING AUTHENTICITY. A harrowing journey through the wide spectrum of military flying and civilian aviation. From the top to the bottom in the world of aviation, ROGUE AVIATOR will keep you awake past your bedtime-

[5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for aspiring career pilots!

As a retired corporate/military pilot who spent a short time as a "freight dog" I loved this book. Would make a great gift to any pilot. Great stories with lessons on safety.
Best of Luck to Ace]

[From commercial airliners to military aircraft and Lear jets, Ace has flown them all. The places he has been and the people he has met make quite a story. An interesting life in the sky. Anyone who enjoys flying has to read this book.]

[I met Ace at the Stuart, FL airshow and purchased his book. It was really a fun read! Ace did most of his flying during the glory days of aviation when there wasn't so much FAA restriction and hassle to get airbourne. His life story really makes for some wild tales and many pilots that will read his account can relate to the events. I am recommending this book to many of my pilot friends and flight students.

[Great book - The Rogue Aviator. A must read for anyone interested in aviation. It takes you on a journey from his first exposure to aviation, a career in the airforce, and then his experiences thur his time as a 727 pilot. Be sure to see Ace Abbott's web page for more information: [..]Browsing in our local book store, I came upon "Rogue Aviator." At
first I thougt it had something to do with that woman in Alaska. A look
at the book jacket, showed it didn't. So, I bought it

I've got to say, I couldn't put the book down. I was taken by Ace's
experiences in the Air Force and commercial flying. I felt like I was
right there looking over his shoulder during his exploits.]

My son-in-law is in the Air Force. I'm giving him the
book for Xmas.

[If you fly, you will be glad you read this book..., August 3, 2010]

[A.J. Poulin I have added Abbott to my list of favored writers along with Jerry Yellin and Pat Kirwin. I like his style and hope we see more books from him!]

[I really enjoyed this book, it's a real "page turner". I'm about a year younger than "Ace", so I can relate to the time frame and a lot of "events" that impacted his career. Ace has had a great life flying and seeing the world from the best seats money can buy. This was an exciting book on a couple of levels at once. Level one: the punchy but always solid prose line that the author turned out. Level two: the insights in into the world of rogue aviators that showed activities and pursuits considerably different from the standard information on the subject. If this is in your local library, take it out. If not, buy it.] The Rogue Aviator is a great read for anyone, whether you are an aviator or not. Ace's writing style keeps the storyline moving along nicely and his breadth of experience and sense of humor makes the book very entertaining. This is especially true for any pilots that have experienced the "back alleys of aviation" during their own careers.]

[Ace Abbott's The Rogue Aviator is a fantastic look at a 30+ year career as a professional pilot and the personal journey one might expect in an aviation related flying career. Ace's life story is a fascinating look at the inner workings of the airline business, and exposes the continuous life/work balance a professional pilot faces during a career. The book solidifies my appreciation of putting family first, before career in the airline industry. If you ever wondered what it would be like to strap yourself into a military jet, build some exciting flight time, and then go fly for the majors, as well as corporate/charter flying, then The Rogue Aviator is worth the read. Highly recommended for those seeking the perfect aviation related gift as well. Thanks Ace for sharing your story with us and for your service to the country.
