This recipe for Apple Cake is preceded by an absolutely beautiful illustrated catalogue of ingredients. Dawn Casey’s book gives thanks for everything that goes into making this apple cake: bees for the honey; trees for the apples and nuts; farmers, cows, and hens for milk and eggs; fire for heat to bake; friends and family to help and share. Each page provides readers with the opportunity to take a step back and fully appreciate each piece of a whole, to be thankful for and recognize the things that come together to create something more, and follows it up with a recipe for what appears to be a delicious Apple Cake. The illustrations by Geneviève Godbout follow an adorable young girl in bright yellow galoshes, accompanied by her beautiful dog, as she collects ingredients for this cake. They’re so vibrantly warm and inviting that I wish I could breathe in the fresh air, feel the rain, smell the baking apples, and join the family and friends at the end for cake.

Thanks to Frances Lincoln Children’s Books of Quarto Publishing Group for granting my wish, and to NetGalley, for both the provided e-ARC and the opportunity to read this book. (My wish now is that I had some apples for that recipe!) My review is honest, unbiased, and voluntary. #NetGalley #AppleCakeAGratitude

A really Lovely illustrated book.
Eye catching pictures and colours that will hold a child’s imagination.

It’s full of gratitude and thanks for everything no matter how big or small.

We all know that pictures in children’s books speak more than the words themselves at times.

A parent or adult reading this to a child will have plenty to chat about

Fun, animated-film-like illustrations bring a simple poem of thanksgiving to life. A little kid recognizes all the pieces that must come together to create a tasty treat--a good reminder for all ages to not take things for granted. The book even includes a kid-friendly recipe for Apple Cake at the end.

What a beautifully illustrated book this is! Endearing from the beginning, the story is written in a prayer like rhyme showing what we should be thankful for in the world. This book focusses around a farm and the children collect apples, nuts and milk which are then used to create a beautiful apple cake. The recipe at the end of the book is a lovely addition and looks very tempting. Even though this is a short story, I can imagine it being a favourite story to be repeated over and over with children, one they can join in with easily. A very simple story but with a big impact and lots to discuss. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher, Quarto for an ARC.

Apple Cake: A Gratitude is a beautifully poetic thank you to the wonderful world around us for all that it provides.

I couldn’t help but think about the Johnny Appleseed grace we used to sing as children, and I love the parallels here.

Humbling and kind. Illustrations drawn in soft colors. This book is a simple and beautiful reminder to be grateful.

Sweet and simply told, Dawn Cosey has written a delightful poem about being grateful to the wonderful world around you.

Even though I read the book and of course know the title, I still didn't realize they were making apple cake until the end. 🤦🏼‍♀️🍎🍰😅 (It's maybe been a long day.)
Apple Cake was a simple beautiful rhyming book that I thing really young children would enjoy for storytime, bedtime, or anytime you would like to remind/teach children about gratitude. The Apple Cake recipe addition was the cherry (apple?) On top.

In today's busy world, many of us take the simple pleasures for granted. How often do we thank the world for its bounty and resources?
This gorgeous and beautifully illustrated book show us a young girl gathering ingredients and thanking everything and everyone along the way.
From the flowers to the farmers, the sun and the rain, and the "earth beneath our feet", she makes sure all are thanked for what they have given her.
We follow the girl on her path with her dog following her along the way. Each page is a painting that could adorn the walls of a gallery- stunning artwork!
A perfect book to teach children thankfulness and joy in the simple ingredients that come together to make a delicious apple cake.
The addition of the recipe at the back makes my mouth water- it is one I will definitely try to make.

Enjoy this book, it is truly special!

A girl and her dog seem to be just exploring the outside world, but it turns out the whole family is on a mission, and hers is only a part of it – yes, they're gathering ingredients for a jumbo apple cake for the whole lot of them to enjoy. Which is why in a lovely rhyme, but just in a few words per double-page spread, we get a prayer of thanks. Well, the subtitle says it's a "gratitude", but I didn't know that as a noun, so non-denominational, universally-acceptable prayer it is. We then get a recipe for the family to use, for our own apple cake, which shows that even in the small detail care has been taken over this book. I loved the idea of trying to peel a full ribbon of apple skin off in one go, which is what us adults do all the time anyway, so now children have been inspired to give it their best too. (I won't go into how stupid the idea of using 'cup' as a measurement is – how many apples is a 'cupful' – one, in a world where we don't have 60oz cups as standard). As for detail, it's certainly in the artwork too, which shows a wonderful style of illustration. More importantly still, perhaps, is the sense of the words as working as a harvest festival/apple festival/Thanksgiving text, which will definitely not get just the one use, but turn up to be enjoyed annually. One that is definitely for the family/school/institution library, then.

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this book!

What a wonderful book!! It is almost a prayer of gratitude fot kids. Often in children's books, gratitude is an underlying or a moral. However, Apple Cake is straightforward in helping kids be appreciative in our consumer world.

The illustrations are breathtaking! I especially appreciate the recipe at the end. This would be a wonderful fall read!!

Apple Cake is a sweet rhyming picture book in which a child expresses gratitude for all of the people and things that go into making a tasty dessert. Beautiful illustrations highlight the gentle rhyming text, which actually has very nice rhythm. But there's one thing that really bothers me about the book, and it kind of irked me enough to affect my enjoyment. And that one thing is the grammar.

The way the verse is written out in the synopsis is not the way it's written out in the book. The book's text is full of comma splices and run-on sentences. It drove me nuts, because it could have been so easily fixed. Instead of

Thank you, hedge,
thank you, tree.

Thank you, flower,
thank you, bee.

it could've read

Thank you, hedge.
Thank you, tree.

Thank you, flower.
Thank you, bee.

and if it had read that way, I probably would've enjoyed this one a lot more. Nobody's going to notice these issues when the book is read aloud, but I still hate to see messed-up grammar in children's books.

There's a recipe at the end for apple cake, complete with a convoluted method for letting kids help cut the apples (which I would recommend skipping if you want to get the cake made before midnight). I never know what to think about recipes included in children's books. Do they really turn out? I have no idea (and since this one calls for eggs, this vegan's not about to try it). Still, having a recipe might be a plus for some people.

The overall message of gratitude is lovely. Paired with the cute illustrations, it's almost enough to make this book one I would wholeheartedly recommend. This is the second rhyming picture book I've read recently that takes liberties with grammar. That's just something I can't get behind; children are still in the process of learning language, and getting artsy will only serve to confuse them.

Thank you, Frances Lincoln Children's Books - Quarto Publishing, Dawn Casey, and Net Galley for the e-ARC of this book, for review. My review will be published on Goodreads and Amazon as well.

I don't usually request children's books for review, but thanks to this gorgeous book, that is about to change. I might even be let down, because this book right here, is just perfection. It deserves every single available star in its rating. 5 stars!!!

I loved the simplicity of the story, the rhythmic words, the absolutely STUNNING artwork, and of course- the message. I love the idea of teaching children to have gratitude for every little thing. Surely, children can appreciate their beloved apple cake, especially if it's as delicious as the included recipe appears (nice touch!). But to feel appreciation for the farmers, who tend the chickens, who lay the eggs- this teaches children a way to apply gratitude to other areas of life, beyond a cake. Gratitude is what this world needs.

I truly love this book, and I'm glad I reviewed it. I do plan to buy this book when it publishes on September 24, 2019 for my toddlers.

This is a very beautifully illustrated picture book of a child gathering ingredients to make an apple cake, and being thankful to all of nature that provides.

It is a sweet thoughtful book, and the recipe at the end reads as though it would be very good, although I would probably buy the almond flour rather than grinding it up myself.

<img src="https://g2comm.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/apple-cake-recipie.png" alt="" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5292" />

<img src="https://g2comm.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/applecake-gratitude.png" alt=""class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5293" />

I like the simple act of being thankful, to not only the apples, but to the people around her who helped make the cake.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

A quintessential example of how the simplest messaging and artwork can make a beautiful, moving, and effective narrative. Brava.

Beautiful illustrations, rhyming text, and a message about gratitude make this a perfect read for young children especially if read around Thanksgiving time. I read this book to my five year old daughter who happens to look a lot like the little girl who is gathering items to make an apple cake. I could tell that my daughter was picturing herself as the little girl gathering items for the cake. She even told me later, "My favorite part was that the little girl was thankful for her family just like me." I feel like other young children will also be able to relate to the message of gratitude in this story and will easily be able to pick up on the repetitive words and rhymes of the book allowing them to chime in and read when the book is read again. If I were to make one suggestion for the book, I would have it include white flour instead of ground hazelnuts or almond flour. Then optional nuts could be thrown into the cake if the baker wants a nutty flavor. The recipe is written to look like it's for families to make with their little ones (it even tells you how to have a child cut an apple safely). Having unusual ingredients such as almond flour may turn some families away from purchasing the book because they know they won't have all of the ingredients to make the recipe. Families could easily find another recipe for apple cake on the Internet that matches their pantry closet (which is what I will do) so it really is a non-issue, but just something to think about. Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Apple Cake: A Gratitude. All thoughts expressed in this review are my honest opinions of the book.

A simple rhyming read that follows the journey of a little girl gathering all the ingredients to make an apple cake with her family. Along the way she expresses her gratitude to nature and to those she loves.

The illustrations by Genevieve Godbout are peaceful and match the tone of gratitude throughout the the book. Young readers will probably enjoy searching for the apple cake ingredients on every page.

Overall, I think this is a lovely book that will help children appreciate all that nature provides.

The illustrations and story content lend themselves to so many great questions and teaching moments. This would be such a treat for young eyes and ears...and so would making an apple cake after! A must have!

This sweet rhyming book is a great reminder of something we don't do nearly enough... be thankful for the blessings around us.

"Thank you, hedge, / Thank you, tree. / Thank you, flower, / Thank you, bee. / Thank you, rain, / Thank you, sun. / Thank you, farmers, / every one."

A little girl and her doggie are out on a mission. Her mother wants to bake a special cake for the family and the wee girl has the important task of gathering all the ingredients needed to do just that. She scoops up hazelnuts, picks apples from the tree, choses fresh eggs from the hens and milk from the cow. After collecting each donation the little girl says thank you to each contributor. Finally she has all the necessary ingredients that is needed and she returns home with her precious bounty.

Mother peels the apples and mixes up the cake batter then... voilà a beautiful apple cake appears to the delight of all!

The illustrations are beautiful and the colour pallet is soft and enchanting. The book is a reminder to always be grateful for ordinary things that we just take for granted. This book would be perfect to read at fall harvest time or included in a Thanksgiving theme. A recipe for apple cake at the end of book allows the reader to indulge also with a grateful heart. I love the life lesson this book provides and the reminder the we are to give thanks for everything now matter how big or small. I highly recommend this book.

This was an absolutely precious children's book with stunning illustrations!

I imagine this story of gratitude will help children appreciate the world around them. The fact that it ended with the family using everything the child gathered to bake something (plus including the child-friendly recipe) was a really nice touch!

My only wish was that it was a bit longer and the reader was able to connect more with the main character!

This charming early picture book follows a young child and her dog as they walk through nature and farms collecting everything they need to make apple cake. The idea of giving thanks for all the gifts of nature and friendship is conveyed clearly throughout the book. The illustrations are beautifully done and will engage young readers and listeners. Apple Cake: A Gratitude is a beautiful, simple and sweet book about gratitude. It would be great for families looking for a non-religious "prayer" to say before meals or at bedtime, as a way to encourage gratitude and appreciation for nature and the work that many, many people do to make our lives easier each day. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. I love, love Geneviève Godbout's art style.

This is a cute and simple rhyming book that has a powerful message. As you read you realize that the child is thanking all of these various things.... an apple, flower, bees, etc. Then you realize that everything that is being thanked is all part of a cycle that helps create the ingredients for apple cake.

It is a great way to show young children that not everything comes from the grocery store. Those items have a purpose and it is so much more then just sitting on a shelf. It also shows the fragile connection that can be so easily broken if we do not show it respect and care.

And the surprise recipe for apple cake is a great touch. It can easily allow for the gratitude to continue as parents are making apple cake with their children.

With beautiful illustrations, and a recipe in the back, this is a perfect quick read for toddlers and twos, and a perfect way to introduce a cooking project for older children, or a way to start a discussion on how many different people and things are involved with helping to make the food they eat.

This book is a very quick read (so perfect for 24 months and younger - but there is enough for older kids to enjoy too). The illustrations are absolutely GORGEOUS and are perfectly matched to this delightful read. It's a book all about gratitude and it sure was refreshing to read as well as remind me personally, that I need to focus on this with my child. There are so many things that we just have and I don't spend enough time remembering that.

For anyone who loves the topic in general and or appreciates nature and all that is provides for us - this is a perfect book for you. A wonderful gift for the upcoming fall as it also includes a recipe for Apple Cake in the back!

This is a charming little book for children! "Apple Cake: A Gratitude" has such lovely illustrations and contains an important message of having a thankful heart. This book teaches children to be grateful for everything in their lives, even the smallest things. I don't have children of my own yet, however if I were to have children, I would absolutely want to read this to them around the ages of 4-7.

I look forward to trying out the recipe for apple cake at the end of this book.

This is a sweet, rhyming picture book perfectly suited for Thanksgiving and themes of gratitude.

The text reads like a secular dinnertime grace (Thank you, hedge, / Thank you, tree. / Thank you, flower, / Thank you, bee. / Thank you, rain, / Thank you, sun. / Thank you, farmers, /everyone....) that acknowledges the people and parts of nature needed to provide our food -- or in this case, our dessert. Lovely illustrations accompany the text, showing a little girl giving thanks to a cow, rain, sun, chickens, etc. for all the ingredients that her family uses at the end to make an apple cake. On the last pages, there's a recipe for an apple cake from scratch that uses the ingredients mentioned in the story. As a bonus for some, the recipe is gluten free and paleo since it's nut based (ground almonds or hazelnuts... you could also try it with acorn flour), though it is not vegan since it uses eggs and honey.

The text is very simple, making this a very short read-aloud for young children. The artwork is sweet and inviting. It's also a good lesson for kids about where our food comes from and an example of food independence (the family grows, raises or forages all the ingredients for the apple cake), along with a subtle message about stewardship of nature.

My rating system:

1 = hated it
2 = it was okay
3 = liked it
4 = really liked it
5 = love it, plan to purchase, and/or would buy it again if it was lost

I read a temporary digital ARC of the book for the purpose of review.

A cute album that also serves as a cooking recipe! ^^

In this short book, we find an apple pie recipe. But before this last one, there is a whole series of thanks for all the ingredients composing it: the hens that lay the eggs, the land that shelters the trees, the last ones on which grow the apples ...
Behind this swarm of gratitude, we discover a light way to show the simple things in life that make us happy.

So it's a nice album, very sweet illustrations and the message that is just as much!
See you on September 24, 2019, to discover it in American bookstores. ^^

"Apple Cake: A Gratitude" by Dawn Casey was a sweet, short children's picture book about being thankful. It is about a young girl who goes around to all the things she loves in the world to thank them.

Gratitude is a crucial thing to teach kids. It is so important for children to learn at a young age to be thankful for what they have, and for all the world surrounding them.

As an added bonus there is a recipe to make apple cake on the last page of the book. One more thing to be thankful for ;-)

Scheduled for a late September (2019) release, Apple Cake: A Gratitude by Dawn Casey is an ideal precursor for the many October apple festivals around the country and for Thanksgiving Day. Plain, uncomplicated language expressing gratitude for the many elements that do into an apple cake is perfectly coupled with plain, uncomplicated, and softly drawn illustrations (Genevieve Godbout). The apple cake recipe at the end is just what the chef ordered.

Favorite line: Thank you, farmers, every one!

A beautiful picture book encouraging young children to think about the things they are thankful for.

Perfect for the harvest season, this book uses simple rhyme and a repetitive structure to express thanks for all that goes into an apple cake, from the ground the apples grow from to the people who make and share a cake.

I am confident this book could be used in a primary classroom to get children thinking about all they are thankful for. With a younger class children could read the story and talk about what they are grateful for, while in an older class, children could write their own rhymes. It could also be used as a starting point for exploring where food comes from.

I'm even considering following the recipe provided (once I've converted the imperial measures!) to share in the staff room tomorrow!

I received an eARC of this book from the publishers via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

4 stars.

Apple Cake is a cute picture book written in rhyme about Gratitude. It's a rather simple little story with a big positive message. It's easy for very young children to be able to follow as there are not many words. This however does not make it anything less than superb. The illustrations are stunning. They have such a beautiful softness to it that I want to reach out and touch them. I think of this style of artwork as comforting which is just perfect for the message being sent in a picture book. I also want to add that this cover is gorgeous. I love the colouring of it.

Apple Cake shows children what they can be thankful for. That it can be something big or small. This is a sweet little book that I would share with children of all ages.

Sweet and simple, while staying grounded and thankful, Apple Cake is a lovely ode to all things, little and big, necessary in making a delicious homemade apple cake. From the life-giving Earth and bountiful plants it feeds, through to hard-working farmers and friends with an offer of help, Casey encourages readers to remember and express gratitude to those indispensable to celebrating and partaking in a tasty lunch or dinner with our loved ones.

The text is easy enough for a still-unconfident reader to take on independently, tied together with pleasant rhyme and warmly illustrated by pretty, animation-like pastel pictures with a calm, subdued colour palette.

The accompanying recipe includes dairy-free and coeliac-friendly options, as well as advice on setting up children to safely help out in preparing the cake.

An adorable idea well executed!

Apple Cake is a beautifully illustrated book written in rhyme about Gratitude/Thankfulness. With Thanksgiving around the corner, this is a wonderful book to have in homes, classrooms and churches. It is simple little story with a wonderful message. The idea of being grateful to nature, people and the world for all the things we have, using something as simple as Apple Cake is wonderful. The story is told in a very simple rhyme with only a couple of lines accompanied by beautiful watercolour illustrations. Apple Cake shows children what they can be thankful for, whether big or small. I love the recipe for Apple Cake at the back of the book. When I read this to my grandchildren, they wanted to talk about the illustrations and what was happening in them. They talked about how they say "Grace" before they eat and that is being grateful and I agreed. We are hoping to make Apple Cake when the apples are harvested in a week or so.

This book reads like a prayer for any harvest party! Being a pagan, I appreciate a good one that is inclusive of all of us. I am going to be reading this at our harvest dinner in November. Just a beautifully written and rhymed story of thankfulness. The illustrations were soft, pastels. All ages should read this one. Kudos Dawn Casey! Lovely book. (It would make a wonderful gift, too!
I found a copy at my local library as I couldn't download to my Kindle.

Apple Cake, might be the perfect fall/thanksgiving book. I loved the beautiful pastel drawings and poetic, simple words. The addition of the apple cake recipe is just the cherry on top. I will definitely be adding this to our family library.

Apple Cake: A Gratitude is a beautifully illustrated, simple, gentle story for the youngest readers (infant through 5-6 years). Released 24th Sept 2019 by Quarto on their Frances Lincoln children's imprint, it's 32 pages and available in hardcover and ebook formats.

The short rhyming text is inset in each page, thanking each provider of the ingredients in the apple cake in the title. It's typeset in Memphis typeface, which is both clear and easily read and allows the art to take center stage. The art, by Genevieve Godbout, is rendered in pastel and colored pencil and is sweetly whimsical and has a nostalgic vibe, following the creation of a cake and being thankful for the simplest gifts.

This would make a lovely reading circle selection for both classroom or library groups, as well as a great bedtime / read-to-me book. There is also a recipe for apple cake included at the back of the book. It's gluten free (utilizing nut flours), and vegetarian (not vegan) friendly. It uses honey for sweetening, so substitutions would need to be made to make it vegan.

Four stars. Lovely presentation, sweetly written and illustrated, with a gentle positive message.

With Autumn here, it’s harvest time. This book is charming. Simple but heartfelt with warm, welcoming, and wonderful illustrations, it’s a great way to show children just how many plants and animals are needed in order to make — the Apple Cake! It also has a recipe at the end which I’m eager to try so I can say my own own thank you’s to the bees, trees, weather, and cows who provided the ingredients. A-

'Apple Cake: A Gratitude' by Dawn Casey with illustrations by Genevieve Godbout is a simple rhyming picture book with a message about being grateful.

A young child wanders outside with a huge satisfied smile on her face. She is thankful for all that she sees from hedges to bees to even the rain. She is thankful for all the things that provide food, and her friends. We find out her journey has been showing many of the things that go into making apple cake. The book ends with a recipe to make apple cake.

I love this rhyming journey of gratitude. I especially love the illustrations by Genevieve Godbout. They are lush and beautiful. I'm a big fan of anything she illustrates.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Childrens, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
