Description

Suddenly unemployed, Allie Masterson returns home to Cary, North Carolina where she caddies for her father on the PGA Seniors Tour. There, she encounters a man who possesses an alluring gift of reading the contours of the green. Fascinated with his uncanny ability, Allie is excited to meet the Green Whisperer—until she discovers that the easygoing caddy is actually Shoo Leonard, the boy who teased her relentlessly when they were kids. Despite Allie’s reservations, when Shoo is faced with having to overcome a hand injury, she agrees to use her sport science degree to become his trainer...and then she falls for him. Shoo Leonard is grateful to Allie for her singular determination to get him ready for the PGA tour, but he isn’t ready for anything more. Still raw from a broken engagement and focused on his career, he’s content to be her fist-pumping buddy…but then he falls for her. What seems like a happily-ever-after on the horizon takes a turn when Allie decides she’s become a distraction to Shoo’s career. This book was 3.5/5 stars for me.

I’m a casual fan of golf. I don’t play it but I enjoy watching it. When I read this book's synopsis, I was really intrigued by the idea of a golf-centered romance. And I was definitely not disappointed by this book’s depiction of golf. I loved the approach the author took in showing how hard it can be for golfers and caddies away from the cameras. Going from motel to motel, long drives (not a pun, I promise), and eating whatever you could get your hands on—in this book, cheese and peanut crackers and sandwiches were a favorite for the caddies. It’s not always a glamorous life, and the book really showed that.

The romance, however, I just couldn’t get into. I liked Allie and I liked Shoo separately, but I wasn’t actively rooting for them to be together. Until the last few chapters, Allie and Shoo kept misunderstanding each other and coming to baseless conclusions on their own. I was fine with it happening the first time or two, but after that it got very old. Many times I just wanted them to sit down and talk so that they wouldn’t be stuck again questioning themselves. Shoo also seemed to have a slight aversion to Allie’s height, repeatedly calling her “sprite” or pointing out her height. I’m not sure what that was about. Maybe there was supposed to be some humor to it, but it never clicked with me.

So although I wasn’t into the romance between the main characters, I thought the minor characters were all great! Characters like Mark and Allie’s dad would tell Allie and Shoo to wake up about their feelings. Truths were revealed about Allie’s mom and Shoo’s dad, and both took me by surprise. It changed my opinion of Shoo’s dad completely, and it was heartwarming that none of the parents were truly horrible people.

The Putting Green Whisperer overall is a wonderful addition to the Christian genre. As far as romance goes, the romance in this book didn’t impress me, but I wanted the golf culture that this book promised and that’s exactly what I got!

The Putting Green Whisperer by Zoe M. McCarthy is a story of los. Love and family relationships revolving around the golf course. Allie Masterson has lost her job and is forced to go home to her Dad and Stepmother. She and her dad have been estranged since her mother was killed in a car accident while she was traveling with her dad, Mill, on the regular tour years ago. Her dad gave up his career and sent Allie to live with her Aunt. Her dad, who has returned to the senior tour, offers her the position of being his caddy. While a bit nervous she agrees to join him. While walking along behind their house she observes three guys practicing putts on the course. One she dubs the green whisperer. When she arrives with caddies the next day she learns he is John ”Shoo” Leonard, the son of retired pro golfer Steve Leonard. Shoo had been among a group of boys who had tortured her when she 10 and traveling with her dad. She checks in and learns they are caddying for the same foursome that day. Shoo does not remember her which fuels her anger. Shoo’s goal is to earn some money caddying and qualify for the pro-am at the end of the senior tour; his career has been derailed by a hand injury. His father’s goal for him is become a golf pro at a well-known, upscale course and settle into one place. Allie’s long-term goal is to use her degree and teach golf to children. Allie tells how Shoo how she was humiliated by he and his friends and after learning his side they become friends. She offers to help him train and is confident he can make it in the PGA. Will their friendship lead to lead to something closer? Shoo is a strong Christian while Allie is not. Allie has many truths to learn and accept in her journey to trying to find God. Will she succeed in finding a true relationship with God?
I enjoyed this book and it did not come across as preachy at all. The characters are mostly open with each other just as people we may meet in real life. They only know their side of several situations and struggle when learning the rest of the story for why someone acted the way they did. I give this book 5 of 5 stars. I found it difficult to put down. I believe it will appeal to a wide audience as there is so much more than golf in the overall story.
