Description

I am the legion of the night …

He appears in the darkness like a ghost, made of shadows and fear—the Midnight Man. He comes for the parents but leaves the children alive, tiny witnesses to unspeakable horror. The bedroom communities of Los Angeles are gripped with dread, and the attacks are escalating.

Still reeling from her best friend’s close call in a bombing six months ago, FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin Hendrix has come to Los Angeles to assist in the Midnight Man investigation and do what she does best—hunt a serial killer. Her work is what keeps her going, but something about this UNSUB—unknown subject—doesn’t sit right. She soon realizes that this case will test not only her skills but also her dedication, for within the heart of a killer lives a secret that mirrors Caitlin’s own past. Hesitancy is not an option, but will she be able to do what must be done if the time comes?

Tense and impactful, Edgar Award winner Meg Gardiner’s latest UNSUB thriller will leave you on the edge of your seat until its riveting conclusion.

MEG GARDINER is the critically acclaimed author of the UNSUB series and China Lake, which won the Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original and was a finalist for NPR's 100 Best Thrillers Ever. Stephen King has said of Meg Gardiner: "This woman is as good as Michael Connelly…her novels are, simply put, the finest crime-suspense series I've come across in the last twenty years." Fourth in the series of UNSUB thriller series is another in a great series Gardiner has written. Non stop page turning action for the thriller fan inside you. Good stuff. Buy it.

The Midnight Man is stalking the city of Los Angeles. He sneaks into houses, murders the parents and terrorizes the children. He leaves no clues behind and FBI agent Caitlin Hendrix and her BAU colleagues are called in to help. The Midnight Man seems to be one step ahead of them. How many people will die before he is caught.

This is part of a series but could easily be read as a stand alone. It is full of non stop page turning suspense. There is a twist at the end that came out of the blue. I would give this book 4 1/2 stars. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

Did you ever finish a book and realize you were somehow holding your breath through the whole ending?? The Dark Corners of the Night was that kind of experience.

This is the third book in the Unsub series and while it could be read alone, I highly recommend reading all 3 - they build on each other and you will fly through them and want the next immediately.

The series follows Caitlin - a law enforcement officer as she is involved with a different case in each book but also with a storyline that carries through them all. In this book, Caitlin is working for the FBI on a serial killer case in LA - the killer targets families, killing the parents and leaving scary messages with the kids.

This is definitely a book to read in the daylight hours. I highly recommend the whole series if you are a fan of Criminal Minds or similar shows. I can’t wait for the 4th book!!

Thank you very much to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance reading copy.

Meg Gardiner’s UNSUB series is quickly becoming one of my favorite procedurals. The writing is swift and crisp, making for a thrilling ride into the dark corners of the night. Even when diving into the profile, where things get more scientific and psychological, Gardiner uses prose that blends all of the technical jargon into a reader-friendly explanation.
Caitlin Hendrix, our protagonist, is becoming a household in my house. She is flawed and human and I am excited each time she’s ready to take us along on one of her cases.

I’ve been a huge fan of Meg Gardiner’s work from the first book in her UNSUB series. Her writing is always crisp, and in Caitlin Hendrix she has created a hero who is engaging and flawed. In other words, a fully fleshed character. For the uninitiated Caitlin is a former cop’s daughter and now in law enforcement herself, an FBI agent in the behavioral analysis division. She hunts serial killers. In this latest, THE DARK CORNERS OF THE NIGHT, a murderer dubbed The Midnight Man, is killing parents then terrorizing their orphaned children, though leaving them largely unharmed physically. Caitlin and her colleagues at the FBI go on a wild chase to capture The Midnight Man before he escalates and starts killing the children as well. This is top-notch crime fiction.

When reading a mystery by Meg Gardner you not only get a good story, but you learn of the ways that police have to find a criminal and the hard work it takes. Keep the lights on when you read this one. They’re looking for someone called The Midnight Man. That alone made me want to turn the lamp up a notch. I expected this to be another suspense filled story and wasn’t disappointed.

Meg Gardiner does it again with the 3rd installment in the Unsub series.
I love the character growth this book has. You really start to totally see how each character plays a role in this series.
Just like the other 2 books in the series this book was a stay up way to late reading book.
If you haven't read this series I definitely recommend checking it out now.

Thanks to the publishers and netgalley for this advanced copy in return I am giving an honest review.

Wow, what a book. It is the first week of 2020 and I believe I have read the best book of the year. Three books in in the Unsub series and each book has gotten better. My favorite author and the reason I became a reader is Michael Connelly. I can easily and honestly say Meg Gardiner is on his level with this series. I highly recommend.

It seemed like it took a bit to get into this chapter of the UNSUB series, but once I did it really took off! As in her other books, Gardiner doesn't shy away from situations in her books which might make readers uncomfortable - and that's a good thing in a book. It was difficult to see what was coming and how it would play out, suspense as I had hoped for. Gardiner delivers again. Dark Corners delivers just enough hope to keep turning pages and just enough suspense and terror to keep us readers from being cautious as we turn them.
...and there were just enough hints into future cases that leave me waiting for the next release.

FBI Special Agent Caitlin Hendrix has come to California to assist the LAPD with a serial killer case. The Midnight Man is a ghost, a shadow in the darkness, as he kills couples and terrorizes their children. As she delves deeper into the murders, and the psyche of the killer, she realizes that they are dealing with something incredibly rare and horrific -- and the answer may open wounds Caitlin though long buried.

This UNSUB thriller utilizes all the many skills of author Meg Gardiner, as she dances a tightrope across the emotions of her readers, and keeps us guessing through every twist and turn. A must read for every thriller fan.

If you enjoy edge-of-your-seat thrills then this series is for you. While The Dark Corners of the Night is not as fast-paced or heart-pounding as the first book, Unsub, it has plenty of action and suspense. This time FBI Agent Caitlyn Hendrix is dealing with a ghost in the night, a killer who enters residences in the dead of night, putting the entire metropolis of Los Angeles on high alert. The mystery is good, the suspect surprising, and while you do have to suspend your belief with these books it doesn't take away from their enjoyment. Recommended for fans of Linda Castillo and dark thrillers. 4 stars

I requested this ARC numerous times from multiple sources like a stage 5 clinger and my tenacious nature paid off when Netgalley came through for me and I was approved! I was over the moon with joy to be able to get this novel early because this is the third installment of one of my favorite thriller series.

I loved the first two books and felt the same about this one. The first book, Unsub was inspired by the Zodiac Killer. The second book, Into the Black Nowhere, was inspired by Ted Bundy. This book, The Dark Corners of the Night deal with the most chilling killer yet. Similar to the first two, this novel made me want to double check that everything is locked, leave the lights on, and keep my 100 pound dog nearby at night.

I highly recommend starting with book one because the main character of the series, Caitlin Hendrix, elvolves with each read and it’s something that should be experienced in order. Caitlin is a flawed and multifaceted character who battles inner demons of her her. It’s important to have a grasp on this when reading so that the reader’s connection to her is strongly forged.

This is a novel that will appeal to fans of Criminal Minds and those of you looking for a fast paced crime thriller. This book has some graphic and unsettling Murder scenes, so beware. I hope this series gets made into a TV show because it’s amazing..

This is another great Caitlyn Hendrix book! Caitlyn is a very well developed main character who carries quite bit of baggage. She was at her best in this installment of the series as she tries to track down a killer who torments the children of his victims.

The storyline in this one was rather horrific, but spellbinding. It grabbed me in the beginning and never let go. This thrilling book is everything I've come to want from a Meg Gardiner book!

A fantastic third installment in the UNSUB series with yet another truly terrifying serial killer as well as the shadowy threat from the Ghost to deal with. I pushed through a migraine to finish this; that's how much I enjoyed it.

Seriously sayin'..........

The Dark Corners of the Night elbows its way into those tiny crevices in your mind that are sacred. Those little niches that you scurry into when life stomps boldly on the fringes of your delicate soul. So much like hidin' under the covers during a violent thunderstorm or zoomin' under the whole damn bed when it just gets deafening and loud enough to break the sound barrier. Only there's no place to hide in this one. No place at all.

Meg Gardiner pulls up a chair for Caitlin Hendrix, FBI behavioral analyst, whom we've met in UNSUB #1 and #2. (You can read this one as a standalone, but the first two books are stellar.) She and the BAU Unit walk through the remains of an explosion at a Los Angeles hospital along with the LAPD. Her heart is in rapid fire as she searches for her best friend, Michele Ferreira, who works as a nurse there. Things don't look too good for Michele at the moment. Could she be a victim of The Ghost known for his devastating bombings? We'll soon found out.

And in the middle of all this, Caitlin has been assigned to a new case by the FBI. A lone devious hunter in black, known as The Midnight Man, has been breaking into local homes and committing horrendous crimes. He's smart, analytical, and slips through the fingers of the LAPD. Along with Special Agent Brianne Rainey, Caitlin uses her finely honed skills as a BAU agent. But this evil doer always seems to be one step ahead of his pursuers.

Gardiner always digs deep into what makes her UNSUB characters tick. She brings in a talented psychologist who lays out the brickwork in the building of these demented souls. It's an eye-opener into the cracked minds of serial killers who appear to be functioning in the normal zone. Lesson learned: Don't ever let your guard down.

Prepare yourself for heart palpitations bouncing off the walls by means of high speed chase scenes and then soft, silent approaches at the foot of your bed in the midnight hour. Case in point: You're never too old for that teddy bear, Kiddo.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Black Stone Publishing and to Meg Gardiner for the opportunity.

Meg Gardiner has written a book that once you start you can’t put it down. Her characters are well formed and the plot moves quickly. It doesn’t take but 2 pages to know you’re going to love this book. Plus you will be scared out of your wits. It was creepy , dark, and scary. Made me want to leave the lights on and put a gun under my bed. Loved it !

I have been a huge fan of Meg Gardiner's books for many years. This current series, The Unsub Series, is my at the top of my list. After reading this third installment, I am so anxious about the next book. Full of intense suspense with lots of twists and turns. I was so engrossed in this engaging story, I read for three straight hours! The writing is superb as always, and her stories flow seamlessly.

Someone is hunting families. Caitlin Hendrix is on a new case with the rest of her BAU team and their killer is targeting families but leaving the children alive. They have no clues and their profile isn't welcomed by the LAPD as they realise that the killer is young and that they have some connection to the police. Caitlin is trying to find out a pattern to the murders but the killer is evolving becoming more dangerous will they be able to catch him before even more people die? Will the team be able to figure it out? Caitlin is worried about her partner Sean as he trying to track down a bomber and they both know that he isn't playing around. Will they ever find the answers that they need to put both cases away? Can the team find the clues to save their latest victim before it is too late as this is the killer's endgame? A good thrilling read. I liked Caitlin character as she is strong yet vulnerable when it comes to Sean & their life together. She puts herself out there. I was lucky enough to receive a copy from netgalley and the publishing house in exchange for my honest review. Can't wait to see what happens next with the bomber.

If you a thriller fan and you haven’t read this series it’s a MUST! Bonus if you’re a fan of shows like Criminal Minds because this book (and the whole series) is like an insane episode of the show but better. Also, you could probably read this as a standalone and be fine but don’t, because all three books are phenomenal and you’ll be missing out.

What makes a perfect thriller for me? A few things, first the case has to be somewhat original so and MG managed to explore something I’ve really never read about before. I won’t say exactly what, but it’s dark, horrifying and fascinating all at the same time and I was mesmerized. I also like solid characterization, this is even more important to me in a series since there’s time to dive deep, and not only do I feel like I really have a strong sense of who Caitlin is as person, I care about her. She’s not some perfect, save the day heroine, don’t get me wrong she’s badass but she’s deeply flawed as well and who can’t relate to that? Finally, I need good writing and MG is one of the best. Her style is both bold and crisp and her pacing is spot on. This had it all for me friends, gimme book four ASAP because that ending has me shook and dying to see what happens next!

A mysterious dark hooded figure is breaking into homes in L.A. murdering parents in their beds and traumatizing but not harming the children in the house. LAPD are stumped and call in the BAU to help profile their Unsub.

We are back in the world of Caitlin Hendrix and the team and seriously this series just gets better and better. In fact, I'd go so far as to say this is the best book yet.

Jaw dropping, nerve jangling, nail biting and a proper knicker gripper, you are right there with the team as the self proclaimed Midnight Man continues his trail of destruction. But with clues that don't appear to make sense and all survivors being young children, L.A. is in fear and on lockdown. Just who is The Midnight Man and where will he strike next? The team are truly against the clock to help identify and track down the elusive predator.

OMG loved, loved, loved this book.

If you're looking for a high octane, heart stopping crime thriller involving the FBI's BAU team then look no further. This book has it all. Excitement, danger, mystery, likeable and empathetic characters, mega climactic scenes and an old adversarial foe lurking in the background.

Meg Gardiner writes her books as if you are one of the team almost, and explaining some of the police speak and criminal terminology along the way adds to it. She always gets the right balance of descriptively writing an ending so as not to rush it but also so that it sets the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end and has your heart in your mouth. I can't wait for Unsub 4. An excellent read.

The Dark Corners of the Night is the third book in the UNSUB series from Meg Gardiner.

"Caitlin Hendrix, a behavioral analyst, and her team from the FBI and called to LA to assist the police in catching a killer. He calls himself the Midnight Man and has been terrorizing families and neighborhoods by breaking into homes and killing the parents in bed and forcing children to say his name. Caitlin realizes the killer is not like any the FBI has ever encountered and when he begins to escalate his behavior they can only hope to catch him before more families are killed."

Gardiner gives us a terrifying killer - one who stands in the dark next to your bed. How many times have you heard a noise in bed and opened your eyes thinking someone was there? Someone in black with a gun? And there's a couple of things about the killer that makes him even scarier (no spoilers)

There are some interesting parts about kill zones. Only issue I have is the author sometimes slips into "over-explanation" When discussing the killer's psychopathy, there's way too much detail and it doesn't add much to the narrative. One other scene where someone who has been shot is being questioned seems a little forced.

Also the storyline from the first book - the Prophet - is teased to us throughout the story. MG - we need that story!

A great chase and finale to this story. Caitlin really has to dig deep on what she would do when she faces the killer. If you like an intense, fast-paced story with some great characters you should read this book.

After refreshing my memory with the past two UNSUB books I tore through Dark Corners in one night!!⁣

This is my favorite book in the UNSUB series yet! FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin is still recovering from a bombing that almost killed her best friend six months ago. Her boyfriend is part of the team looking for that bomber while she's suddenly involved in an intense new killer investigation. ⁣

This unknown subject (aka UNSUB) breaks into houses in safe neighborhoods in the middle of the night to kill the parents, but leaves the children alive and terrified by drawing bloody eyes all over the walls. He calls himself The Midnight Man and his frenzied attacks are escalating. Caitlin has a sneaking suspicion about the Midnight Man and feels connected to him in a way that scares her a little bit.⁣

I don't want to give anything away because the reveal shocked me, but this was hella suspenseful and kept me turning pages late into the night! ⁣

If you love shows like Criminal Minds and entering the dark minds of killers you will love this series. I'm going to be thinking about that ending and shuddering to myself for awhile!⁣

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/ 5 blazing stars for this stunning suspense novel!⁣

Meg Gardiner, queen of the serial killer thriller, has a new Caitlyn Hendrix UNSUB book going on sale February 18, and YOU NEED A COPY!!! In this outing, Dark Corners of the Night, Caitlyn and the FBI Behavioral Analysis team are in Los Angeles profiling a serial killer who calls himself "the Midnight Man." Unlike most serial killers, the Midnight Man targets families, killing the parents but leaving the children alive but terrorized. As the team scrambles to complete the profile, the killing escalates, and family after family is awakened from sleep to meet death and terror.

Gardiner's writing is darkly atmospheric, and the pace of Dark Colors of the Night is breathtKing. This book will keep you up all night, but you may be scared of the dark! Highly recommended. Thanks to Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley, who provided an ARC in return for this honest review.

'The night and the wind filled him with command. He licked his lips. His knife sliced the window screen. His shadow invaded the house before the rest of him."

Brilliant police procedural thriller. Full of action and suspence. People interested in profiling will especially love this book!

Someone is targeting families in LA. Killing the parents and traumatizing the children 'I am beyond good and evil'

Will FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin Hendrix and her team be able to figure out who this person is before things escalate?
In the meantime they don't seem closer to finding the Ghost who has vowed to kill Caitlin.

I liked the multiple story lines and how it's neatly pulled together. I can't wait to read the next in the series. Brilliant author!

Thank you to Netgally and Blackstone Publishers for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Anyone who follows my blog knows that I’m a huge fan of the UNSUB series and that The Dark Corners of the Night is one of my most anticipated reads of 2020. I’m happy to report that my love for the series has only grown with this third book because author Meg Gardiner really knocked it out of the park. While the cover of the book is super creepy, let me just say that the story itself is even creepier. My skin crawled as I read about the horrific adventures of the killer who has been dubbed “The Midnight Man.”

The Midnight Man sneaks into family homes in the Los Angeles, CA area under the cover of darkness. He deliberately chooses families, and he murders the parents but leaves the children alive as witnesses to his unspeakable acts. As the body count quickly starts to rise and local law enforcement officers realize they are dealing with a serial killer, they call in the FBI, which is where the protagonist of the UNSUB series, FBI behavioral analyst, Caitlyn Hendrix, enters the picture.

As with the first two novels in the series, it is absolutely riveting watching Caitlyn and her team carefully piece together a behavioral profile for this UNSUB and gradually work their way toward a list of possible suspects. I love the sense of trust and camraderie that has developed between the members of the FBI team in these first three books, but I also liked the bit of tension that I saw here between the local law enforcement. It was an uneasy alliance between the two groups even though they were both there trying to achieve the same goal: to catch a killer.

Caitlyn is always a big draw for me when I start a new UNSUB book, but she really drew me in even more than usual in this one, for a couple of reasons. First, as she’s learning more and more about the profile of the Midnight Man, she starts to see something of herself in him. He reminds her of her past and it disturbs her so much that she has to fight to keep it from impacting her work. Second, The Dark Corners of the Night also signals that we are finally starting to circle back around to an unresolved case that was left hanging at the end of the first book. My one disappointment with the second book was that it wasn’t really touched on, so I was thrilled to see it revisited here with some teasers to advance the plot.

I think the books work fine as standalones but are absolutely outstanding as a series read in order, especially when it comes to watching for developments with that unsolved case that keeps dogging Caitlyn. If you’re into thrillers and especially into shows like Criminal Minds that delve into the FBI world of analyzing criminal behavior, I highly recommend the UNSUB series.

"I am the legion of the night. I am beyond good and evil."

This is the third book in this author's UNSUB series. Most of the time I try to read the prior books before starting in the middle of a series but I'm finding that there are "just too many books and too little time." I am quite sure I would enjoy the first two books but I found there was enough backstory in this one to really enjoy it.

This was a long book. A good portion of the time I will consider this as a negative - that the book is too bloated and should have been edited better. Not so in this case. I enjoyed every page of this thriller.

Caitlin Hendrix is still shaken up by events from six months prior that harmed her best friend and got her ATF boyfriend involved. So she's still a bit on shaky ground when her and her colleagues of the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit are called to Lo s Angeles to profile an active serial killer known as the Midnight Man. This person is randomly selecting families at night, killing the parents and letting the children live.

Caitlin finds that this case is one of the worst she's worked on plus it brings back memories of her own childhood.

I loved this book. I appreciated all the characters - they all had something to add to the storyline. I also liked how the author explored the L.A. area in depth.

I highly recommend this psychological thriller.

I received this book from Blackstone Publishing through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.

Meg Gardiner is the queen of terrifying crime thrillers, and she’s finally quenching our thirst for her haunting serial killer stories with the third installment in the UNSUB series - The Dark Corners Of The Night!

Oh how I’ve missed Caitlin Hendricks - she still remains my absolute favorite fictional detective (now FBI behavioral analyst). Caitlin now has a new challenge - The Midnight Man: a killer who will exceed all your expectations. Each new information that emerges about our killer is more shocking than the one that precedes it.

As always with Meg’s books, the writing is sharp, confident, doesn’t look down on the reader, and the descriptions are impressively cinematographic (the scene in the intro is a perfect example - incredibly haunting)! I thoroughly enjoyed the investigation dynamics as Cait worked with her team to understand the killer’s behaviors, and also the involvement of a genius psychiatrist (Jo) who helped put everything into perspective, like, how did she figure all that out?!!

If you’re looking for a unique police procedural, or are a fan of the UNSUB series, make sure not to miss this one. Can it be read as a stand-alone? Heck yes! But given how this 3rd book ends (what the heck?!), I recommend reading the 1st one. Either way, you’re in for a treat. I can’t get over the final line in this book though, I have a feeling the 4th installment is going to be a killer!

"I am legion of the night. I am beyond good and evil." The Midnight Man steals into their homes under cover of darkness, kills the parents, but leaves the traumatized children alive. He is terrorizing the greater Los Angeles area and the FBI is called in to assess the situation and create a profile.

Caitlin Hendrix is no stranger to hunting predators and serial killers; she works for the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit along with Unit Chief CJ Emmerich and Special Agent Brianne Rainey. They soon find that this is an UNSUB who is unlike any other that they've profiled or apprehended. They've come from Quantico to assist the LAPD but their efforts don't seem to be helping to stop these home invasion murders despite an all-out effort. The killings continue and the Midnight Man seems to be escalating. Few clues to follow until they finally get a survivor who can give them all some crucial information. NO SPOILERS.

If you're looking for an excellent crime suspense thriller with nonstop action and great characters, then look no further -- and I recommend you start with the first one in the series as this is #3. Definitely a one-sitting read if you can manage as it's incredibly hard to put this down. There is so much going on in this book and the author gives detailed descriptions, background information, and interesting facts to prop the narrative. The writing is very good and the tension created will be exquisite as the FBI team and the LAPD try to identify and close in on their elusive criminal. I'm giving this one 4.5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for this e-book ARC to read, review and recommend. I can't wait a year for #4 -- honestly, it's that good a series.

Meg Gardiner is back guys!! I am a huge fan. Her first two novels, Unsub and Into The Black Nowhere are phenomenal. So, when I saw this one coming, I almost fell off my bed in excitement.

Another killer, another excellent thriller. The perfect who dunnit.

The Midnight Man is a killer you don’t see lurking . Lay in wait, ready to kill and leave his tiny witnesses behind. The witnesses being the children. He is always a step ahead and the police can’t catch up, and then comes FBI behavioral Analysit, Caitlin Hendrix, to try and find this illusive killer.

Excellent. Oustanding. Terrifying.

5 stars. My second of the year.

Meg Gardiner did it again! This is the third book in the Unsub series and I was anxiously awaiting this one. It did not disappoint. FBI Behavioral Analyst, Caitlin Hendricks, is back again with an all new case.
.
Even though it’s the third book in the series it could be read as a stand alone. However, it would definitely be better to read the previous books so that you get more background information. This one was heavier than the previous books when it comes to the lingo used by Behavioral Analysts which comes to show that the author did her research. It goes in depth on how they use the info they have (or don’t have) in order to come up with a profile for an UNSUB. This can be a put off for those who just want action rather than reading about this but I think it worked for the book.
.
In this case they are looking for the Midnight Man. A killer who enters the homes of families and kills the parents while leaving the children scared and traumatized. I don’t want to give way a lot details but some stuff I saw coming while others took me by surprise which I loved. It was was like an episode of Criminal Minds only that I was reading it instead of watching it. Caitlin is such a badass character and her flaws make her even more real. This book features a young girl named Hannah and let me tell you, she was such a brave little girl.
.
This book ended in a perfect set up for the next book. Ohh and Amazon will be turning this one into a TV SERIES!

First off, how creepy is that cover?! I absolutely love this series by Meg Gardiner – Unsub and Into the Black Nowhere are the first two books. I read these two through my e-library, so I was really excited when I was accepted for a review copy via Netgalley for The Dark Corners of the Night. This book is all sorts of terrifying. The Midnight Man sneaks into family homes, killing the parents, and leaving the kids alive…but they slowly escalate in how they terrorize the children. The serial killer in this book reminded me a bit of The Night Stalker and the Golden State Killer (aka the Original Night Stalker).

The book, and series, follows FBI behavioral analyst, Caitlin Hendrix. I love that while she’s an amazing cop and can really get into the head of these messed up killers, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a heart or find her job difficult at times. This case in particular really hits her because it involves children – she doesn’t have any of her own, but her boyfriend has a young daughter. Granted, even without that connection, any case that involved hurting children in any way is bound to be difficult for most.

The Midnight Man isn’t really revealed until closer to the end, but I loved learning more about them as the FBI team profiled the kills and crime scenes. There are definitely some twists and turns concerning the killer, and it really kept me glued to the pages. The Dark Corners of the Night is probably one of those books readers will want to avoid actually reading at night, as it’s creepy and intense. This series is definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you’re a fan of mysteries/thrillers, then I highly recommend reading these books. I think it’s a good idea to read them in order, as you really get the backstory on Caitlin, and there’s an overarching case throughout the three books so far. I am so curious about the fourth book – this one doesn’t leave on a cliffhanger per se, but it certainly leaves you wanting more!

Caitlin Hendrix is back in the third installment of UNSUB. A well written gripping read, the Midnight Man comes at night and his terror is increasing on this community. The characters are compelling, and the story is chilling I highly recommend this book and author she is an amazing writer

Every now and again I read a book that I desperately want to finish but I also can't bear to get to the end of. The Dark Corners of the Night is one of those books!
This is a hugely fast paced story with some fantastically unexpected twists. I don't want to give the plot away as it's so amazing to uncover yourself but I cannot recommend this enough. I also can't wait for the next!

There is a serial killer on the loose in Los Angeles. He is called The Midnight Man. He breaks into homes in the middle of the night, he kills the parents and leaves the children unharmed, but with a message. He leaves no trace behind. The LAPD has no choice but ask for the help of the BAU and so FBI agent Caitlin Hendrix is back! As the killer strikes over and over again, the FBI needs to figure out why The Midnight Man is killing and how to stop him.

Haunting, scary, gritty, The Dark Corners of the Night gave me goose bumps and made me check that the doors and windows where locked at night. The murder scenes are gruesome and violent and the descriptions are very detailed. I found fascinating how the author digs into the mind of the serial killer and the story becomes a character study as she explores the reason behind their behavior. The profiling process is detailed and insightful and it gives the reader a break from the fast-paced narrative.

The characters are well-developed and realistic and the personal lives of the protagonists mixe with the police procedural creating a gripping and authentic story that I couldn’t put down. The story is told mainly from Caitlin’s point of view, but we get also a glimpse of the killer and his victims’ perspectives.

Would I recommend The Dark Corners of the Night? Absolutely!!! Crime fans out there will love the originality and darkness of the story, the suspense that doesn’t leave the pages, and the strong and human characters that drive the story. A brilliant and thrilling read not to miss!

This book is quite good. Its just that there are times, some narration and explanation makes the story a bit unnecessary. But its filled with action and thrill. It was really an exciting read!

Thank you Netgalley and Blackstone Publishing for allowing me to read The dark corners of the night by Meg Gardiner. This is her third book in the UNSUB series but not having read the first two didn't stop me from totally getting into the story. While there is a continuous thread running from the previous books it can be read as a standalone. I was intrigued by the character of Caitlin, her style of detective work, the ease she showed working with Hannah. I can't wait to read the first two books; I am just sorry I didn't read them first!

Terrific book. Absolutely loved it. Compelling characters and story line. Kept me interested the entire time.

It’s like an episode of criminal minds when the show was really good. I never read the other books but Dark Corners works fine as a stand-alone.

Fans of creepy crime thrillers, this series is for you!!

A serial killer is targeting Los Angeles families. Smart, ruthless, methodical, the so-called “Midnight Man” kills both husband and wife, but leaves any children physically unharmed but terrorized, left looking at ritualistic symbols and heeding frightening warnings from the man who killed their parents.

Desperate to catch this killer, the LAPD brings in the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, including profiler Caitlin Hendrix. The daughter of a former cop, she’s young but tough as nails when it comes to her job. She also bears the physical and emotional scars of past cases, and while her extreme empathic nature makes her good at what she does it also takes its toll on her.

As the killer becomes more and more brash, the discoveries they make about him shock them, particularly Caitlin, and make it both easier and more difficult to stop him. It’s a dangerous battle with unexpected adversaries, and this killer will do all he can to wreak havoc.

Meg Gardiner’s “UNSUB” series is really intense and well-written. This is the third book in the series. They're dark and suspenseful and tremendously well-written. I love Caitlin’s character. Her sensitivity really sets her apart and I love her relationship with Sean, which didn’t get as much coverage in this book as I would’ve liked.

I think this book definitely is setting up one hell of a fourth book. There’s a lot of action and violence in here but it never seems gratuitous. If you love crime novels, pick up this series.

Thanks to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for an advance copy of the book in exchange for an unbiased review!!

Meg Gardiner is back and better than ever! This is her third book in the UNSUB series. Caitlin Hendrix, the main character, works for the FBI and has been sent to California to track down a serial killer. Each book in the series can be read as a stand alone book, but I highly recommend reading all of the books in order to truly understand what is going on in the series. Just like the previous two books in this series, I couldn't put this book down! This is a thriller/mystery that will have you on the edge of your seat until the final page!

The Midnight Man is hunting. He appears in the darkness like a ghost inside your house before you even have a chance to brush the sleep from your eyes. He’s hunting parents and leaving behind children to serve as tiny witnesses to the unspeakable horrors he is capable of causing. He is the legion of the night.

FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin Hendrix has been sent with her team to the suburbs of Los Angeles on the pursuit of the deadly Midnight Man. Something about this UNSUB doesn’t sit right with her immediately. Ranging from the killer’s targets to his methodologies, there is simply something not adding up. It will take all of Hendrix’s dedication to catch this killer, as it appears the frequency and intensity of the Midnight Man’s attacks are accelerating.

THE DARK CORNERS OF THE NIGHT is the third installment in Meg Gardiner’s UNSUB series. As with the previous two installments, the reader is back following along with Caitlin Hendrix as she investigates a gruesome killer loose on the streets. This new installment picks up right at the heels of the conclusion of the previous book, which immediately provides resolution to the cliffhanger ending readers were given with INTO THE DARK NOWHERE.

Caitlin Hendrix is the star of the UNSUB series. She is an incredibly strong-willed behavioral analyst working for the FBI who is willing to put her life on the line to catch killers. As with previous installments in this series, Hendrix is quick to throw herself full heart and soul into the case of the Midnight Man. Backing her up are a well-rounded team to provide the details and clues Hendrix might miss without them, as well as her significant other, Sean, who serves as Hendrix’s rock and sounding board.

Meg Gardiner is always shocking me with the cases she dreams up for Hendrix to investigate. They are unique in the crimes and killers she creates. These cases definitely have a gore factor to them, which might turn off some audiences. I appreciate that Gardiner doesn’t use this gore for shock value. It’s there to show how deadly these killers are and exactly what dangers her lead character is up against. I love that often these cases include a bit of iconography, which add a unique touch to how the profile for the killer is developed.

For those new to the UNSUB series, I highly recommend reading these books in order. I think you could get by reading them as standalones, but you’ll definitely be missing out on the connections to previous installments that thread throughout each book. This series is one of my absolute favorites and I look forward to each new release!

A huge thank you to Blackstone Publishing and Booksparks for my free copy!

Meg Gardiner's third book in the Unsub series again features Caitlin Hendrix, a former Bay Area, California detective who joined the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. Richard Ramirez, aka the Night Stalker, supplied the idea this installment. Ramirez terrorized Los Angeles and San Francisco neighborhoods when he committed home invasion robberies, rapes, and murders in the mid-1980s. He ultimately earned nineteen death sentences, but died in San Quentin State Prison in 2013 while still awaiting execution.

Stated simply, The Dark Corners of the NIght is terrifying . . . in the best possible way. The book is dark and richly atmospheric, the settings vitalized by Gardiner's lushly descriptive prose. She sets scenes with details that evoke the mysteriousness and attendant fear of the wee small hours in which the crimes take place. An unsub enters family homes in low-crime neighborhoods where security is, in some manner, lax. There are not home security systems or dogs. Once inside, the parents wake up and discover him before they are murdered in cold blood, their bodies mutilated. But he spares the children. He leaves behind graphic messages and tableaus with which he declares his dominion over his victims. He ensures that the children see him and forces them to repeat mantras back to him such as "I am beyond good and evil," telling them he is the Midnight Man before leaving the youngsters traumatized and orphaned.

Caitlin and her colleagues collaborate to understand his preparation, the similarities of the crime scenes, and motivation. He's an outlier, but his knowledge of the neighborhoods he haunts, habits of his victims and, more particularly, police procedures not generally known to members of the public help the team assemble a profile that provides clues to his identity. He is stealthy and determined, and as the number of victims escalates, so does the pressure to catch him.

Caitlin is a compelling, empathetic character. It is not necessary to read the first two installments in the series in order to enjoy The Dark Corners of the Night because Gardiner provides enough background for readers to appreciate Caitlin's experiences and fears. Her flaws are intriguing and provide context as she scrambles to identify and apprehend the killer before he can strike again. The case is extremely disturbing and brings into question Caitlin's ability to withstand the stress of trying to stop such a brutal killer without losing her precarious equilibrium in the process. The Midnight Man is the darkest perpetrator she has ever encountered, and Caitlin battles inner demons, as well as the criminal at large. As the story progresses and the killer's identity is revealed, Caitlin's self-doubt ramps up the tension, consistent with Gardiner's philosophy that the primary focus of her books should be on "the investigators — the people who dedicate themselves to putting away as many of these criminals as possible. . . the people who are taking on this burden on all of our behalves, to apprehend unsubs and bring them to justice and try to make the streets or the night at least briefly safer." Toward that end, Gardiner's cast of eccentric supporting characters, including Caitlin's fellow law enforcement professionals, also keep the action moving and interesting. FBI Unit Chief C.J. Emmerich, the man who recruited Caitlin and is her boss, returns and plays a pivotal role as she grapples with the emotions the case evokes. Particularly endearing is twelve-year-old Hannah Guillory, the witness who is determined not to become another victim.

After Gardiner discloses the murderer's identity, as well as his incentive to kill, the book's already quick pace accelerates as Caitlin, et al. desperately rush to apprehend The Midnight Man and prevent him from claiming more victims. Gardiner deftly sets the final showdown at a downtown Los Angeles redevelopment project. The four-block site of abandoned office buildings and hotels scheduled to be demolished and replaced by loft apartments, office towers, and shopping areas provides the perfect backdrop against which Gardiner's characters encounter enhanced dangers as they close in on the killer. Caitlin engages in a treacherous, winner-take-all strategy to apprehend the murderer.

Gardiner succeeds spectacularly at creating a compelling, frightening mystery that is completely absorbing and highly entertaining. The Dark Corners of the Night is sure to keep readers up late, telling themselves, "Just one more chapter" . . . hopefully, with the doors and windows locked, the home alarm system armed, and all of the lights on!

Caitlin Hendrix is back in The Dark Corners of the Night - another great addition to the suspenseful UNSUB
series! Quick paced action - hooks you from the beginning. The only negative is waiting a year for the next one.

Meg Gardiner has done it again! Engrossing and very well written, The Dark Corners of the Night is the perfect mystery novel. It grabs you from the very beginning and does not let go until the very end.

The story is about a serial killer who comes for the parents and leaves the children unharmed. FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin Hendrix has come to Los Angeles to assist in the Midnight Man investigation and do what she does best—hunt a serial killer.

This is one of those thriller you cannot stop reading. Highly recommend!!

I've been a big fan of Meg Gardiner's UNSUB series since the first book came out a few years back, so I was eagerly anticipating the newest book in the series, The Dark Corners of the Night.

Like the others, this book follows FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin, who is on a new case for a serial killer they've dubbed 'The Midnight Man', as he breaks into houses of families in the middle of the night and kills the parents, leaving the children alive. We jump right into the action with this one, so I was hooked from the very beginning!

This installment of the series focused more on the police side of things - we see Caitlin in action trying to determine who the killer is more than we see the crime scenes. You can tell Gardiner has really done her research - the procedural parts of the book came across very knowledgeable and well written.

I finished the book in just a few hours, and am already eager for the next book, which seems to be set up to tie in some of the storylines from the earlier books, which is exciting! The only thing I wish I could have seen more of in this book was a better understanding of why our killer was the way they were, and more about their motives. There was a lot of symbolism the killer used, and the meaning of those things was discussed throughout the book, but I was wishing some of those pieces could have been wrapped up slightly neater. That said, I rated the book 4.5 stars!

I waited so long for this book (since the last one came out!) and it did not disappoint! This series from Meg Gardiner is my absolute favorite thriller series. It’s fast paced and impossible to put down. If you love Criminal Minds, you’ll love this book. But I do think it’s necessary to read this series in order as they all end on cliffhangers! Can’t wait to see what she publishes next! Five stars

I’m already a Meg Gardiner and UNSUB series fan, so The Dark Corners of the Night was on my 2020 radar already and high on my wishlist!⁣

The UNSUB series novels each stand on their own, echoing familiar, known high profile serial killer cases and all centralizing around our heroine, Caitlin Hendrix. Suspense and crime fiction fans will definitely enjoy this series and should start reading Meg Gardiner immediately if they haven’t already.⁣

And now, Meg Gardiner has done it again! The Dark Corners of the Night has the slow build, with constantly increasing suspense that leads to a break-neck paced ending that the other books in the series also feature. We still get the Caitlin we know and love, but while prior books were suspenseful police procedurals, I’d call The Dark Corners of the Night more of a detailed, character study and profiler procedural than the first two novels. ⁣

If you’ve read Gardiner’s other UNSUB novels you should definitely grab a copy of The Dark Corners of the Night. If you have yet to start the series, while this book could absolutely stand on its own, I’d recommend starting with the first book in the series, UNSUB.⁣

Meg Gardiner's UNSUB series is a must read for crime lovers.

The Dark Corners of the Night brings the thrills, chills and deep insight into profiling that we've come to love from Gardiner. Caitlin Hendrix is one of my favourite protagonists. She's smart, story and vulnerable all at the same time. In this installment, she's called to LA to investigate the Midnight Man, a serial killer who enters homes and kills parents, leaving the children behind.

I loved the exploration of of the profiling process. You can tell the research and detail that Gardiner has put into the book. The killer has shades of different real life criminals, which is something I love when I read.

While it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading them in order to get the character development and relationships between the characters.

This is a top notch read for lovers of the genre and if you are a fan of Criminal Minds, you must read this series!

Where do I even start with this book? I'm a super big fan of Meg Gardiner, however, the last book in the UNSUB series, Into the Black Nowhere was not a favorite of mine, so I had a little trepidation going into The Dark Corners of the Night, however, those feelings were quickly overcome! I was able to get right into the story and kept with it throughout all of it, just as interested in the beginning as I was the end!

This story is not like any other that you may read. Who is the UNSUB and will Caitlin and the team be able to deliver the correct profile and catch the bad person before it's too late? I think it's safe to say that this story has a lot of highs and lows, ups and downs, and mouth dropping moments that will leave you reeling through the end of the book!

Caitlin is one bad chick! These are the characters that I live for! The ones that don't take anything from anyone and have the ability to scare grown men! But in this book we see a softer side to her and I like that just as much!

I sure hope there's more to come for this UNSUB series because it has become a great one to hang on to! I look forward to more greatness from you Ms. Gardiner!

I would like to thank the author, Meg Gardiner, the Publisher, Blackstone Publishing, and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.
