Description
September 11, 1973: Eleven-year-old Alejandro Penda watches from his apartment window as Santiago, Chile falls to a military coup, destroying his family and his childhood. Arriving alone in America, he’s taken in by the Larks: a prominent family in the town of Guelisten. Though burdened by unresolved grief for his disappeared parents, he becomes fiercely loyal to the Larks, eventually marrying one of their daughters, Valerie.
September 11, 2001: Javier Landes watches from his apartment window as New York City falls to terrorism. As one of Manhattan’s top-paid male escorts, this professional lover has never lacked for company and is loyal only to himself. But in the wake of 9/11, Jav is named guardian for an orphaned nephew in Guelisten and must open his carefully-guarded heart to pain he's long suppressed.
Alex, Valerie and Jav meet first in their twenties, with a sudden attraction each finds strange and compelling. When they meet again in their forties, they discover not only is their bond still strong, but their life experiences are strangely similar. All have been shaped by separate 9/11's, and their unfinished business from the past will change everything they know about love, loyalty and friendship.
Across three decades and two continents, Suanne Laqueur's fifth novel explores the unpredictability of sexual attraction, how family ties are forged, torn and mended, and how love's downfall can turn to exaltation.

Wow!! I can’t believe I’ve waited so long to read this book. I read the “Fish” books and was a little scared nothing could top them or I would be disappointed, but low and behold, Suanne still has the magic touch! Her writing is not for the faint of heart, there is emotion, deep emotion, throughout her writing. It pulls you in and doesn’t want to let go...ever. I will tell you that this book had me on the edge of my seat ready to throw my iPad at certain points in the story. I really had a lot of hatred for one character in particular, maybe even two of them. But the ending saved my dislike, for the most part.
If you enjoy books that are detailed, emotional and beautifully written, I would highly suggest this one! I don’t think you can go wrong with any of Suanne’s books.
I just finished this book and OH MY!. It was so good. The characters, the story building and weaving of all the lives was all done with perfection. Highly recommend. 5 ⭐️ •
Suanne Laqueur's novel was an multi-layered, enjoyable and entertaining re-read, a moving story of trauma, grief, loss, pain and love. In 1973, with all the dangers posed by the military coup in Santiago, Chile, 11 year old Alejandro Penda is taken to live with his uncle in the United States. Haunted by the loss of his disappeared parents, Alejandro becomes Alex and close to the warm and all encompassing Lark family, with his relationship to Valerie Lark becomes something more later as the two get married. Their lives becomes intertwined and closely connected with another soul who has experienced trauma and rejection, Javier Landes, through the decades, years where they face tragedies, challenges, complications, love and friendship. In the wake of 9/11, Javier finds himself the guardian of a orphaned nephew in Guelistan. This is a immersive, colourfully vibrant drama of friendship, marriage, dysfunctional families, being a parent, sexuality, identity, despair and hope, and so emotionally engaging. Many thanks to Cathedral Rock Press.
Where was this book my whole life?
color me stunned because this book was everything. Such a beautiful tale of love, heartbreak, grief, loss and many other things. The writing style is very accessible and enjoyable. I really got attached to the characters and felt for them. This story made me sob several times and touched me deeply.
It is my first time reading a book by this author and it most certainly won't be my last.
I HIGHLY recommend.
