Description

Despite what Jordan Peterson says, there are more than twelve rules for life . . . a lot more. Thankfully, you now have this witty guide to remedy every annoying little thing society throws at you.

488 Rules for Life is not a self-help book, because it’s not you who needs help—it’s other people. Whether they’re walking and texting, asphyxiating you on public transport with their noxious perfume cloud, or leaving one useless square of toilet paper on the roll, people just don’t know the rules.

But now, thanks to Australian comedian Kitty Flanagan’s comprehensive guide to modern behavior, our world will soon be a much better place. A place where people don’t ruin the fruit salad by putting banana in it . . . where your co-workers respect your olfactory system and refrain from reheating their fish curry in the office microwave . . . where middle-aged men don’t have ponytails.

What started as a joke on Kitty Flanagan’s popular segment on ABC TV’s The Weekly, is now a quintessential reference book with the power to change society. (Or, at least, make it a bit less irritating.)
Despite what Jordan Peterson says, there are more than twelve rules for life . . . a lot more. Thankfully, you now have this witty guide to remedy every annoying little thing society throws at you.

This is a hilarious guide book full of rules you should follow in your life. I don't know why it took me so long to read this one, but I'm so glad I finally got around to it.

I really loved it and I definitely recommend reading it.

This is one of those very light and fun books. It turned out to be much better than I expected. Although I'm not the kind of reader who reads so many comedy books, when I read the synopsis of this book, a slight curiosity automatically arose.

In a simple and brief way, the author gives us simple and basic rules of how to survive. They turn out to be simple tips, that kind of guide that most rules we already know.

Without a doubt, an ideal reading for those who are looking to unwind a little or even have a good laugh.

A funny book for "rules of life.'
Covering everything from cell phone usage to passing gas.
It's a comical take on every situation you could possibly imagine.
We need humor in the year of 2020, and this is a good place to start.
You can pick up the book and start from anywhere.
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for allowing me to read this ARC.

This rules will leave you laughing out loud, the author has written them in such a fun and brilliant way that makes it a delight to read. It is a light read. The rules are so releatable that you'll find yourself being both a victim and offender of these rules & throughout this book I was just thinking "Why schools are not teaching us this ?".

I love life! I also love a good laugh and if there’s anything I’ve enjoyed reading this past month, it’s got to be Kitty Flanagan’s 488 Rules for Life, because even though Jordan Peterson sampled only 12, Kitty just like me, knew that there’s gotta be more than 12, because seriously…life is so diverse!

My absolute favorite rule: no. 431: If you borrow a book, return it promptly.

This is a fun book to read and she breaks down these simple life rules according to events, situations and places- and you can’t help but laugh at how true most of them are.

I’d definitely give this a 5-star rating.

Nice and entertaining book. Although I couldn't agree with every rule, the explanations are funny and well argumented.
Rule 89, 429 and every rule of the "Flying" and "Internet commenting" sections are my favorite!

Reading an Arc copy 488 Rules for Life was everything most people don’t want to say or are too scared too!
It’s bloody brilliant and brutal I was laughing so much I had to screen shot some and send to my family, work colleagues, friends just so I could share with laughter with them.
I enjoyed how it was each section how it’s covered just about everything.
Most I would think most should be done in politeness and common sense but clearly people need to be told some about life skills.
I will read this again just to laugh at new rules and would buy this as a gift for others.
I like the bit at the end so you can add your own life rules.

Legitimately funny from start to finish. If all my friends, colleagues and connections shared her worldview, life would be easier to manage.

Oh dear I decided to start reading this when I was waiting to see my doctor, this was a big mistake! I was snort laughing within the first few minutes and had to try to cover my laughing as everyone in the surgery was looking at me strangely. The author's brand of humour shines through in her book and most of the "rules'" are so relatable in everyday life..
This book is definitely one to bring out when you are feeling a bit low or want something quick to read that will bring a smile to your face. I am going to grab a few copies and give them to friends and family so they can get a laugh out of it too!

Some of the rules are really funny, and most are actually quite helpful. A few are a bit questionable, but maybe that's just me. I liked the idea of rules with a bit of humor and this book served just what I expect from it.

As the synopsis says, 488 Rules for Life by Kitty Flanagan isn’t a self-help book - but it is definitely a must read if you’re looking for something to ‘literally’ make you laugh out loud!

I read this in one sitting and didn’t stop laughing the whole way through - from rule 29 which is something I’m definitely guilty of to rule 138 which is my biggest pet peeve, all the way through to the last rule which was just the perfect ending, this entire book is hilariously relatable and just an overall good time.

A few of my friends and family will definitely be receiving a copy of this for Christmas this year - some because they will love it as much as I did, and others because they could really use a reminder of some of these ‘Rules for Life’ 😜

Highly recommend!

This is really funny and definitely hilarious book that I have spent my time reading just for 1 day. It's like reading a day to day "to do and not to do" list.

Definitely recommending this book to read.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this in exchange of an honest review.

If you like order and rules, and you have at least some sense of humour, you'll definitely like 488 Rules for Life.
The rules are quite relatable, unless you like listening to people talking loudly in the cinema, in which case....what's wrong with you? All of the rules are delivered in a smart and fun way and give you even better arguments for the next time you have to ask someone to tone down their bad behaviour.
I found myself agreeing with a lot of the rules, some were weird, but it has to do with the author being from Australia - I don't even know what Vegemite is at all. But I do use my right to rule 1, so it's all good.
All in all, a very entertaining book.

This was a really good book, it's funny and informative. It's states the obvious and yest necessary. If you know someone who is rude give them this book. It'll work, trust me. I like how passionate the author is about all these rules. It's houmous almost how serious they are, which I guess was the point of the book all along.

When comedian writes abook it is always funny. If it is not then check the author again.
It is a collection of 485 ways in which our circumstances leave us on wrong foot.
It is a funny take on normalcy of life and points out our lousiness in dealing with day to day life.
It tells in a hilarious way the things that we ought to stop doing while doing things daily in the name of routine normal life.
It is tickling and has incisive take on very fine details of things humans do daily.

I received an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Kitty Flanagan is one of my favourite comedians so naturally I had to read this book. I was not disappointed. It’s so funny and extremely relatable. I loved every part of it however was slightly disappointed when I discovered that there really were not 488 rules listed.. I happily would have read all 488 but oh well.

I’ve already bought copies of this book for members of my family for a little pick me up and to make them smile and laugh.

Definitely a good present for this christmas.

This book is a joke! No, really - it started as a spoof bit Australian comedian Flanagan made mocking Jordan Peterson’s ‘12 Rules for Life’, and people started wondering why it wasn’t a real thing! There are way more than 12 rules for *anything*, was her point - and, after reading: I agree. Settle in for a good laugh, because this book has the quick answer for how to do everything right in life. It’s a tongue-in-cheek self help book that will make you giggle. And, because my parents just wondered whether or not my new apartment bathroom does or does not have a door, and that it needs a door if it doesn’t have one, because bathrooms just don’t not have doors - it’s also timeless: there are just some things that make life more bearable. And this list of hilarious ‘notes to self’ is, funnily enough, a testament to all of those things.

488 Rules for Life made me smile with each page turn. The rules were relatable with a great mix of seriousness and humour. As a fan of Kitty, I loved that Kitty's personality shone through and I could imagine Kitty listing off these rules and having a whole host of stories to join them.

a fun version of "12 rules for life." in this one, the author covers a lot of topics and combines the advice with great humor, which was on point. there were some segments that truly i enjoyed and made me laughed out loud. on the other hand, there were others that i didn't care much for. overall, an entertaining read.

Greatly enjoyed this! It was written in a fun, engaging and hilarious manner that made you want to devour the book in as few sittings as possible. I agreed with most of the rules and wish there were more! It turns out that things I thought were only in my head were not just in my head but experienced by other people too; be it inconsiderate acts, frustrating encounters, ridiculous fads and more. Highly recommended!

488 Rules for Life by Kitty Flanagan is a funny and light-hearted book that tells you all these rules that we have to live by. Most of the rules will be already familiar to us, though that doesn't mean we follow them. It was much better than I expected.

4.5★s
488 Rules for Life: The Thankless Art of Being Correct is a non-fiction book by Australian comedian, Kitty Flanagan. This is a book born of a throwaway comment on TV program, The Weekly, about Jordan Peterson’s book, 12 Rules for Life. Flanagan says even she was surprised at how many rules she has. And here they are, organised into sections for easy perusal.

This is laugh-out-loud funny and readers should be especially warned against listening on public transport where uncontrollable giggles and guffaws might disturb other travellers. Also eating/drinking whilst reading parts of this may result in mishap, and readers with continence issues may want to take extra precautions.

Many of Flanagan’s rules will resonate with readers, although some might be a little contentious or at least thought-provoking. The narration by the author is, of course, excellent and she provides some extra content or amends/edits some rules, but anyone who has seen Flanagan on TV will have her voice running through their head when reading the print version. And the print version has the added bonus of clever illustrations by Tohby Riddle.

Personal favourites for this reviewer are:
GENERAL HUSE RULES: #2 Football jerseys are not art. Don’t frame them. And definitely don’t hang them on the wall.
THE BATHROOM: #14 Do not leave one square of toilet paper on the roll #20 No phone calls in the toilet.
THE KITCHEN: #23 Flog the dishwasher until it does the job properly.

EXERCISE GEAR: #37 Men must wear shorts over leggings. The gym is no place for people to discover whether or not you are circumcised. That’s a private discussion for another place and time.
KIDS TODAY: #87 Curb your use of the word “like”
DINING OUT: #150 Be polite to waitstaff. #154 Respect the non-drinker at the table. #155 Don’t punish the vegetarian.

ONLINE DATING RULES – FOR MEN: #196 Don’t list loving your kids as an attribute.
GENERAL PARENTING RULES: #216 Reserve the phrase “good job” for something worthwhile.
TATTOOS: #259 No butterfly or dolphin tattoos. This is because as your body sags and spreads you’ll soon find yourself sporting a dirty old moth in place of the butterfly, and where you once had a majestic dolphin leaping across your deltoid now there’s a sad, lumpy creature that looks more like a dugong.

ATTENTION, SUPERMARKET SHOPPERS: #300 Don’t be sucked in by this week’s “special buy” at Aldi. #301 Don’t collect plastic rubbish at the checkout. Supermarkets can call these things “collectables” but what they really mean is “useless bits of shit”. I can guarantee your limited edition set of miniature groceries will never appear on a future episode of Antiques Roadshow.

SOCIAL MEDIA: #329 Nobody wants to sign your change.org petition.
SPECIAL RULES FOR FOOTBALLERS: #361 Never assume a woman wants to have sex with you.
THE ZOO: #425 Birds plus a farm animal does not maketh a zoo.
THE FINAL RULE #447 Lower your expectations, that way you can never be disappointed.

Hugely entertaining.
