Description

It was still blistering hot at midnight the last day of August 1967: The Summer of Love. The Beatles album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, was still number one in the land as it had been all summer long. With the eastern world exploding, racial tensions mounting and war protests igniting, Bob Dylan penned, "The Times They are a-Changin'." Theo, a college bound senior found his way of life a-changin' too. Cornjerkers is the story of best friends -- Schatzie, Pottsie, Punkinhead and Theo. That August night was the beginning of a magical school year of sports, first love, and madcap confrontations with teachers. It was a time for questioning. Televisions were filled with reports on the Vietnam War, student unrest, and political change. On the local front, the town tough's murder dominated the news. The journey saw Theo's life change dramatically; his chance to escape Hoopeston jeopardized by the prettiest girl in school, Tamy Johnson. Eventually he needed to decide: Was it time to pull the plug on college?

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down, August 23, 2012 By JodyT - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cornjerkers (Paperback) I so got into this book taking me back to Hoopeston and the 60s and the places and people I had almost forgotten that it was hard to put it down and come back to reality and 2012. It helped that my brother John Morgenroth was in the story a great deal and also my mom, Doris Morgenroth, but I would have loved the book regardless. I found myself wondering what happened to Tamy (even though a fictional character) and hoping Dave would think about a book about her exploits. I can hardly wait to get to Hoopeston for a visit and have Pizza King pizza!

5.0 out of 5 stars Feels like home!, August 20, 2012 By SC Stephenson "sglandglad" (Murray, KY, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cornjerkers (Paperback) Was so excited to get this book, as my hometown is Rossville, IL and I'm familiar with most everything in the book. The author made me feel "right at home". He's a great writer and brought the images to life...with humor. Definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cornjerkers - A Midwest View, August 17, 2012 By Manet - See all my reviews This review is from: Cornjerkers (Kindle Edition) Cornjerkerts is all the things you love about life in a small town during the laste 60's with a twist. While the story surrounds a high school senior's last year it's also a tale about coming of age during major national news stories. It's about wanting to fit in and being a "good kid" mixed with some pretty funny high jix of being a soon to be graduate.
Easy to read, I was reminded of many things we did at the end of our innocence and the beginning of true adulthood.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ September 4, 2012
By Steve Ward

I just finished the book and it took me back 45 years to when I was growing up in Hooterville. It brought back countless memories about people, places, teachers and events, etc. that happened when I was there in school 2 years ahead of Dave. I think it typifies any small midwestern town in the late 60's so even if you're not from Hoopeston it is very relateable to those times. In reading the book it all seemed like it was yesterday and you wonder where did 45 years go. I really enjoyed the book that is very well written and in great detail and hope Dave writes a sequel.
