Purged Souls

Kagan Tumer turns post-apocalyptic thrillers on their heads with this engrossing read about what happens when Americans survive an alien bio-agent.

The world-building is absolutely fantastic. We see bits and pieces about how California was rebuilt in small areas, with ‘Unregulated Territories’ in-between. There are no info dumps of how and why the cities were rebuilt, and the Purge virus, responsible for the apocalyptic events in the book is slowly explained as we continue on in the story.

What I love most about this novel is how real the characters are. Colonel Lori Rose is a woman whose past has shaped and redefined her, and boy is she flawed in more ways than one. This is a person who cares deeply, but who is afraid to let people in, because she has seen the damage wrought when she lets her guard down.

Mika Bayley is the ice to Lori’s fire. He’s funny and charming, but wicked smart, and he is Lori’s one true friend to the end. His quick with and intelligence make him an asset, one that both the good side and bad side want. Mika’s loyalties lie with three people: Lori, Amy, and himself. In Marin, those are the only people he can afford to trust.

What I loved most about Purged Souls is that Tumer takes everything you think you know about what is happening, and twists it so that you never see the punches coming. Just when you think you’ve sorted out the important bits, Tumer shakes things up and leaves you reeling with whiplash at how fast things can go from good to bad to worse in a few mere pages.

Now, this is a long read, 400 plus pages to the paperback, but it is an engrossing read that will keep you captivated from beginning to end. When I finished the last page, I already wanted more, needed to know more about what happens with these characters I had grown to love.

I would recommend Purged Souls to fans of post-apocalyptic thrillers, political thrillers, or fans of The Stand by Stephen King or Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel.

Reading this book was very  intense I like a lot.
The word building nice done, the story that came with a lot  of twist and turns keep you. 
I like about, how California  was rebuilt in small area.
What I don't like how was slowly explained tje virus "purges".
The writing about all the characters was writing very good like the are real person.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where the whole world-building is interesting, with intense politics and nervewrecking alliances and enemies! 
Lori Rose and Mika Bayley are the two main characters of this story. Lori is fire while Mika is her ice. These two characters complement each other even though they are so different. I would say Lori is much more of a morally grey character while Mika is the dreamer of the story, but both are such interesting characters with a lot to tell.
I confess at first I was reading very slowly, but as soon as the story started to develop, I was immediately immersed and couldn't let go. With twists and turns until the very end, it grips your attention!
If you enjoy post-apocalyptic sci-fi stories, this one is for you! I highly reccommend this one!
