Review to come January 2021 on Blog/Goodreads.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I don't know who Tommy Siegel is but he has two new fans! This one looked very cute and funny and I can say that it was truly funny as well. And very true. :P

I decided to grab my hubby along as I read this one. I know he likes these kinds of comics as well! We both loved the introduction, but then the real fun started. We all know candy hearts and the texts they have. Ranging from silly to weird to romantic. Well, these are not those standard texts. These are thoughts. Many of these had us laughing but also definitely agreeing that things indeed went that way. I also loved that there were some COVID/2020 comics.

But there were also a couple of comics that had, at least me, scratching my head. That Phish comic? I had to look up what that was all about.

I think my favourites would be those dating app/Tinder comics. While I never have used those apps, I have heard the stories, I have seen pictures on Twitter. So I was giggling at seeing all those candy hearts doing the same as many people do on those apps.

All in all, though, this was a fabulous and fun read and something we could all use in this time. Some laughs, something funny. I would recommend this one.

This was in some ways funnier and in some ways less funny than I thought it would be. The most of the comics were hilariously apt, but seeing them in comic form somehow makes them hit harder. I loved how the artist managed to give Candy Hearts a facial expression even though they don't even have a face.

Such a hilarious, relatable comic!

In a few words, this book is a compilation of several one-panel-comics that illustrate what sometimes we are truly thinking –sometimes as a part of a new relationships and sometimes as someone who’s just tired of the same old partner. And it doesn’t matter if you’re single, I’m sure you’ll laugh about this too. We’ve all been there, I promise you.

I would totally recommend it because it’s a light-hearted reading but also because you can go through this in less than an hour. On the other hand, this the first time I read anything from the author but let me tell you, I’m excited to see what comes next.

The art style is simple but is meme material so it’s perfect to share it with some friends who are struggling with anxiety and depression due to the pandemic.

Tommy Siegel's Candy Hearts started out as a single idea for a comic during a project. Siegel was drawing a comic a day for 500 days, and dashed one off. In the introduction to this book of comics, Siegel writes "I started to realize that candy hearts made for a pretty convenient setup to illustrate inner monologues . . . on the outside. A way to cut through to the truth and bluntly show what people are feeling but not expressing to their loved ones." The idea is a fun, novel one, and really captured a lot of attention when Siegel posted it, on Valentine's day in 2018. Now, a whole book of candy heart comics await anyone who wants to read something earnest and short.

While obviously anthropomorphic candy hearts have different physiology to human beings, they really come across in Siegel's comics as bizarrely human. Their faces are expressionless, but their body language expresses almost as much as the lettering on the hearts. The collection is humorous, blunt, and raw, full of jokes that hit hard and sometimes come a little too close to the truth. While it is a fast read, it is a joy to revisit, and well worth a place on your shelf. Some of my favorite bits include the tiny baby hearts, and the dogs, which are both cute while the latter are adorably derpy. There is just something so sweet about a little candy heart playing with a truck, and a dog with one of its eyes hovering out of focus. Word to the wise, I did find myself reading the funnier ones aloud to my significant other, so if you do buy this book for a loved one, prepare to listen to it as they chortle over the more amusing tableaux.

This book is full of humor in a cute and colorful art style. I liked the contents of this book that mostly hits close to home, but will still make you laugh. I would like to read more from the author and candy hearts someday.

Candy Hearts is a real and honest book about love in this modern world. It is so relatable and hilarious, the kind of book you would laugh out loud and be like "Hey, this is so me!" Its the kind of book you can read in one sitting and actually enjoy it. Its so unique how the author took the concept of the candy from Valentine's Day to actually use as characters. I love all the details as well as the illustrations in this short book and had a fun time getting curled up with Tommy Siegel's book about love, relationships and the whole package.

A simple concept paired with witty remarks in a breezy, fast read. Tommy's Candy Hearts had me laughing out loud! I particularly enjoyed his Tinder profile illustration series.

Thanks to NetGalley, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and Tommy Siegel for the ARC!

Thank you to the publisher for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I was reading this during class while I had nothing to listen to and do however that was a bad idea because I kept laughing out loud because this was simply just so funny! I didn't read too much into this comic and went into this comic with no expectations. I ended up absolutely loving this!

It was so funny how you absolutely needed no backstory or context in order to know what the comic was on about and all the different scenarios shown, I thought it was so funny and I could relate to many of them which is always a good thing.

I also loved the art, it's simple but yet so extravagant and fun to look at. Especially the legs to me looked hilarious.

I definitely recommend this one.

Thank you NetGalley for the eARC of Candy Hearts! Can confidently say this might be one of the only books that I have whole heartedly enjoyed every single page. Tommy Siegel’s comic book collection has come about during a perfect time in history: during a global pandemic. I think I laughed at every single page, or as he would draw: me on my phone with a smirk on my face. He perfectly illustrates scenarios of early 21st century life in a way that makes me think if there’s ever an apocalypse where we lose most of the literature and art from our generation, this one would need to survive to explain what modern life was like. Light-hearted with a cynical tone, a very enjoyable read for any and all ages.

I don't know that any person can make me laugh as hard as Tommy Siegel and his demented, wonderful cartoons. This collection is just as good as his first, and may even be better, which is saying something because I really loved I Hope This Helps.

I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe at one cartoon, only to have the next one hit like a gut punch. He is honest and the cartoons aren't only funny but also show a vulnerable side to relationships, which are always oddly relatable.

Books like this can either flop or they can slay and this one is definitely the latter. It's so relatable and so funny and shows us the ridiculousness of our own society and our own selves without being too deprecating. Helps you appreciate the way the world has changed in a really funny enjoyable way. Well written, well drawn. I can't help but wish I had thought of this myself. How many times I've wanted to walk around with a sign that said exactly what I was thinking just to see what would happen. This book puts you in that scenario. If you liked heart and brain comics or hyperbole and a half, you will love this. 🤣❤️ #candyhearts #netgalley

Here is the review that I wrote on my website: https://thistlyrose.com/2020/10/22/netgalley-review-candy-hearts-by-tommy-siegel/

PLEASE NOTE: I received a free copy of this book through netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. 🙂

I really wanted to read something light-hearted and fun, and this just hit the right spot. The book is essentially a collection of comics drawn by Tommy Siegel that reflects on modern dating and love by writing brutal truths on cutesy love-heart candy designs: it is comedic genius. We expect these love-hearts to represent the clichés of romantic love, and instead they reflect the uncomfortable – and hilarious – inner thoughts of the single, the dating, and the married.

Some of these comics represent situations that were so familiar to me. There is one that depicts a (presumably) female candy heart walking down the street listening to podcasts, minding their own business, whilst another shouts on “some fuckin’ bullshit.” This made me giggle and I will definitely think of it the next time it happens to me. Of course, it is a sad state of reality that this type of thing happens, but it always cheers me up when someone like Siegel throws light on the crappiness of it all in a way that manages to actually make me smile. It is a testament to the cheerful and unserious way in which Siegel deals with these potentially depressing truths and I for one sometimes need to laugh at the state of the World, or I would just cry.

Forever.

Seriously, it would be non-stop.

This book also makes fun of our reliance on phones and technology today; for example, 6 candy hearts stand at a party talking to one another, but each candy heart has “I can’t wait for a quiet moment to check my phone” written on them. I would have to say that my favourite ones are the ones that highlight the perils of using technology to date, especially the cartoons that represent the different off-putting male tinder profiles you can find, (all equally cringe-worthy!)

I will now stop gushing and instead recommend that you buy it when it comes out in 2021. For what it was and what I wanted today, it was ideal, and I will definitely be gifting it to friends and family next year!

It's a pretty simple comic model that Tommy Siegel has created - anthropomorphized candy hearts set in some kind of very familiar relationship scenario, with their true feelings written loud and clearly on their bodies. It's literally nothing but this from start to end in this collection, and if you think that it would get old, you'd be justified with that rational assumption.

You would also be incorrect.

Granted, I say this as a millennial who has had a decent share of dates and relationships - so, in other words, I probably couldn't be more in the target audience. Which is why these comics continued to hit again and again and again with a severe relatability that had me wincing in remembrance while making me burst out laughing with both delight and a sense of relief. Siegel once again reveals himself to be one of the comic greats when it comes to calling out the many absurdities that make up our present-day reality.

If life had subtitles, this would be the comic book for it.
A series of events from everyday life, at work, at home, outside, among friends, alone.

Things we keep inside but mostly never share.
Really enjoyed reading this one, it had something to say for all.

Thank you Netgalley for this eArc copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was, in a lot of ways, very relatable, even if in some cases it showcased a harsh reality or situation, like the one, for example, portrayed on the cover. It's tragically true.
But seeing these situations and slices of life depicted in candy hearts made it funny and lighthearted to read. It's as if the candy hearts had facial expressions (even though they didn't) with what they were saying/expressing.
It's also quite current, as it even deals with situations in our current climated of covid-19 day-to-day life.
I liked the simplistic and yet to the point art style. Who doesn't enjoy candy hearts, right?

I read this book over night. A very quick read, but super cute.
Very comically represents today's relationship. Nothing was exaggerated.
The reliability factor along with the cuteness of the illustrations made it an interesting read.

This was such a fun, quick read, exactly what I need it. The author did an incredible job with this, I loved that I didn't even have to see expressions to know what tone they meant, it just worked quite well.

I didn't know the author but after reading this, I'll keep my eyes open for his future releases.

This book had me laughing out loud many times- from the damaged but in a creepy way candy heart in the movie theater, to the training to date them candy heart, to the please God not in this chipotle marriage proposal (yikes!) and more. This was such a cute book, albeit a little too true about the dating world at times, even including social distancing to demonstrate the world we currently live in. The date with the cat- yeah, that's totally me right now- who knows maybe May 2021 I'll be ready. Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest reivew.

"I am in a desperate need for the Candy Hearts series. I need it, alright?!" If you have read my review on Tommy Siegel's, 'I Hope This Helps', this is what I said in that review and what do we have here today? My desires getting fulfilled! *shook*
So, I manifested that hard, huh? And that should give you an idea of the extent of my expectations and glee diving into this one, right?

*air punches* THIS IS EVERYTHING! I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO GET ENOUGH OF CANDY HEARTS!!! Each one is hilarious and insightful and just too precious! At this point, my reviews on Tommy Siegel's work is just telling y'all to GET YOUR PAWS on whatever title of his I'm reviewing.

The reason why I am giving this 4-stars: I was left wanting more of Candy Hearts because I'm officially unapologetically greedy about Candy Hearts now. But it is a straight-up 5-star read. GET YOUR PAWS ON IT, ALREADY. I mean, pre-order it.

Candy Hearts is a funny and very relatable comic strip book. I've never come across Tommy Siegel's work before so this was an absolute delight to read.
The pictures are funny and show many truths behind the start of relationships, dating and marriage.
This book drew me in by the cover and I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to read and review this book!

I absolutely love the clever humor and drawings in these comics! Definitely will appeal to adults. I will look forward to the next one of its kind.

I picked up this one because the premise sounded humorous and like it would be a good palette cleanser from some of the other stuff I've been reading lately, and it was exactly that. These single page comments of candy hearts saying what they are really thinking and feeling in the moment. Be forewarned that there is some language, but if you're looking for a very relatable laugh, this is a great one for it.

This book was given to me in exchange for a review, all opinions are mine.
This was a fun comic to read!
Its candy hearts, but think candy hearts for modern times. Instead of the normal lovely quotes, you get hilarious inner monologues of people written on the candy hearts. God i wish these were actual candy hearts i'll buy them in a beat.
The further you go into this book the funnier and more relatable it becomes.
If you are looking for something that would have you randomly laughing on a train, get this book.

I am familiar with Tommy Siegel and his candy heart characters, and I immediately requested this.. It is a quick, funny, and light read. I found myself laughing really loudly a few times. He takes everyday dating and relationship scenarios, and creates really funny conversations between the characters. The reason why most will find themselves laughing is because it is a depiction of what some of us are really thinking on dates or in our relatioship. I plan on buying it and laying it on my coffee table when people come over. It is a really fun comic to just browse through and get a really good laugh. Thank you NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the advanced copy.

This book is hilarious, I couldn’t stop laughing. The words are so honest that regardless of who you are you will find a comic that represents a situation you have been in which is awesome. Right now the world is very dark but this is a light in the darkness. It’s so relatable in a good way and I’m so in love with it!!!

I wasn't sure what to think of Candy Hearts when I first picked it up, but once I started reading it, it felt like exactly what I needed. The type of humor these little comics have is the kind of humor that you laugh at because it is just too true.

Siegel looks at the very real and awkward social situations we all seem to get into, by using candy hearts to demonstrate the inner thoughts we all tend to have. I found the comics that related to COVID-19, 2020, and quarantine to be especially funny because they are just way too real not to be. Comparing the before and after is something we have all been laughing at lately. Anyone with any kind of social anxiety or has ever been in an awkward situation I think you will get a kick out of this little book.

If you are looking for a quick read that will give you a good laugh I highly recommend this one.

This comic gives a simplified view of relationships, with the help of candy hearts. It is a quick read, with many great ones that made me laugh out loud, like the naming the rats or Valentine's Day one. It's an interesting concept that has a lot of potentials. It contains very relatable situations, from established relationships to first dates, situations that many people go through. It gives a look at the thoughts that go through people's minds while they interact with others. There is no denying it that some of these actually happened to me as well. Although there were some weird ones that made me frown, they were quickly forgotten because of the next comic.

Overall, it was a nice book, happy to have read it.

3.5/5

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased opinion.

Candy Hearts is a book of comics based around the premise that what is written on the candy heart is what the person is thinking but not saying in whatever situation they have been drawn in. I enjoyed this book even more than Siegel's debut comic collection. These hilarious single panel comics will definitely have you relating with what the candy hearts are thinking. My only concern is that some comics may not age well, as they relate to the pandemic, which will age the book with time.

Funny, sarcastic and very realistic comics for adults.

I just loved this sarcastic little book of comics about dating. Instead of people, the characters in this book are colorful candy hearts, which is awesome because the gender inclusivity that entails (especially with the exclusive use of "they").

In every comic, it is shown what the candy hearts are really thinking during a certain interaction. Shocked at the daring accuracy of it, I was compelled to send individual pages to my friends, pretending like it's social interaction too.

All I can say is that I wish this book was much longer.

This had me laughing from the first page. The truth hurts and it is hilarious. Siegel does a great job of bringing everyday life to life with these 'conversation' hearts. Who said they were only for Valentine's Day? LOL

I was kindly provided with an e-arc of this book via NetGalley.

Candy Hearts is a hilarious graphic novel detailing the different stages of dating in a modern world. It covers relationships that are just beginning, ones that are years long, ones where children are involved and ones that are going to end in divorce. There are relationships that are forming through Tinder and ones that are dealing with Covid-19. I really enjoyed the modern aspects, especially ones based on the cornavirus pandemic.

It was refreshing to see a humerous outlook on the pandemic, particularly with relationships. There were comics describing how some realised they were ready for a relationship, just before they went into a lockdown and then they were left unable to date under normal circumstances. There were also ones where they were seeing someone and then realised they didn't want anything serious with them, only to then go into lockdown and end up quarantining with them.

I really enjoyed the focus of two people coming together and rarely being in the same place or not thinking in the same way as the other person in their relationship.

If you're looking for a quick, humerous read, I highly recommend Candy Hearts.

4/5 stars

An absolutely hilarious short graphic novel about modern social discourse and relationships through candy heart one-liners. I was cracking up laughing at more of these than I anticipated going in, which is always a pleasant surprise. Other pages almost hit toooooo close to home (lolololol). I'm so glad I decided to read this because it was the exact type of self-depricating, while also being insightful, humor that I needed in the current times. Highly recommend.

I adored this book about people’s internal thoughts and daily issues, written on simple Candy Heart people. It was funny but also covered real and difficult topics. The illustrations were cute And simple with the bright colours of the Candy Hearts making them stand out on each page.

My only complaint is that I wish it was longer. I now cannot wait to read more from this author/artist.

"Candy Hearts" by Tommy Siegel is a hilarious comic book that takes a real look into people's minds when it comes to love and relationships. Each panel is simplistic in its wording however, a picture really does tell a thousands words and Siegel is able to tell whole stories in each individual panel of this comic book. His views on love, relationships, and Tinder hit so close to home and this books sheds a light on the inner workings behind people's intentions all while doing so through humor. Siegel's art style is simple and and effective. He is able to portray so much emotion simply through the candy heart's body language.
I laughed out loud multiple times throughout this comic book and would highly recommend it to everyone!

Candy Hearts, by Tommy Siegel had me laughing the whole way through. These quick, one panel cartoons are quick-witted and cut straight-to-the-point.

Very cute gimmick for this comic collection; putting those chalky yet tempting valentines candy hearts as stand-ins for people in romantic situations and making the candy hearts' pithy slogans wryly reflect the situation at hand. For example, one candy heart is giving a present to the other and the words on the giver read "For My Love Blossom, the Perfect Gift," while the receiver's hear reads "Wait, Do They Think We Are Exclusive."

More hits than misses, especially when the comics turn to love in the time of COVID. A diverting collection.

This is a picture book about basically two candy hearts having conversation in different situations lol so you can imagine how it goes from there. Of course they reflect real life situation and dialogues, so it's pretty easy to relate to a lot of those moments, but instead of real people, we see cute candy hearts going through the same situations we do.

The illustrations are so funny, because they show how people are in day-to-day situations, such as online dating, long and stable relationships, blind dates, etc. Overall, it's a very quick and fun read and I recommend it if it seems your kind of vibe.

This is a collection of humorous comics that feature people as conversation hearts with “real” messages. It covers topics such as relationships, break-ups, dating, and parenting. The comics are single panel and stand alone. This collection does not have an over-arching story and is not told chronologically.

What I liked:
*The artwork is clever yet simple. The simplicity allows the humor to be the focus.
*The messages on the hearts are hilarious. I laughed out loud while reading this comic collection.
*I enjoyed how the illustrator incorporated the pandemic into life by comparing “now” to February 2020. This simple comparison was often very humorous especially when describing the challenges of dating during a pandemic.

What I did not like:
*Since this book uses single panels, it felt a bit short and was an incredibly quick read (I believe less than 30 minutes for me). I wanted more!
*I felt like the focus of the candy hearts jumped from big topic to big topic with a large focus on dating. I would have liked to see a bit more even, consistent distribution of the topics.

Overall, this is a hilarious collection of comics. If you need a good laugh, this collection will make you giggle. This may make an excellent gift to someone who loves sarcastic and snarky humor.

Candy Hearts is a collection of short comics from Tommy Siegel, following the adventures of candy hearts with insightful messages written on them. All of the comics are funny, relatable, and witty. Siegel doesn’t shy away from awkwardness, the realities of living in a pandemic, or modern romance. I would definitely recommend this as a gift or as a book to read when you're looking for a more cynical sense of humor. Candy Hearts releases on February 2, 2021. Thank you to Tommy Siegel, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and Netgalley for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this one!

It made me laugh so much. It had some darker humor in it which is definitely up my alley. I thought it was also a very novel idea to have the candy heart be representations of what everyone is thinking. It was easy to read and overall a fun experience.

I think there is also a great sense of being able to relate to all of these because gender plays virtually no role in the scenes. The candy hearts are all shaped the same and various colors with no visible social gender norms represented in the way they are drawn. That's kind of an unspoken aspect that really made the reading experience enjoyable to me.

Tommy Siegel's Candy Hearts is a collection of comics starring his famous hearts expressing their inner feelings. They came about as part of a 500 day comic drawing challenge, and in the foreword, he invites you to interpret them as you like. You're sure to have come across one of his comics or one remixed as a meme in your online travels.

Siegel manages to perfectly capture the nature of dating today - from the awkwardness of meeting your date online ('I thought you were the other person in the photo'') to Tinder staples (man holding fish, man holding dog, group of people so you can't tell who you're swiping on). I feel like I've dated or at least been interested in nearly all the stereotypes he featured, which is validating (and also kinda hmmmm).

There's a lot of overthinking when you're into someone or just figuring out if you like them - and I found a lot of these comics relatable..I was lucky enough to hop off the Tinder-go-round and into a relationship last year, but now Siegel's got me thinking about other steps. Like meeting the family, mutual issues or when someone proposes ('God, not in this Chipotle'').

The candy hearts themselves are bright and colourful, a contrast to their sometimes darker expressions ('Ready to ghost' was one of a few standouts for me). Siegel has also put a lot into the backgrounds, which I appreciated.

I can't wait to pick up Hope This Helps, Siegel's book about the 500 comic journey, with tips and more. As someone on day 6 of a drawing challenge, that is just mind-boggling. Also, I'm hoping he releases a collection of the Pringle Man comics, because I think they are hilarious.

Thanks to the publishers for sharing this one. It made me laugh, though some of the cartoons were very close to home. My full review appears on Weekend Notes.

Three stars from me because I liked it - I use the Goodreads rating system for consistency. This book is one of those relatable ones where you’ve either been in a similar situation or can readily name someone you know who has. It was a wonderful distraction from 2020 and all of its mischief.

I am reviewing this on behalf of the e-ARC I received thru Net Galley. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to review this awesome book.

Content ---
Totally awesome and true. This made me laugh out loud the moment I read this last year. It really is humorous and true to our experiences. We've probably experienced at least 70% of these.

Art --
Art is engaging and mesmerizing. It was simple enough and humorous. You could turn this into a meme, to be honest.

Candy Hearts is an honest, unflinching, and hilarious take on everyday relationships and some more famous relationships too. My favourite being the Batman and Robin candy hearts.

Candy Hearts would make a fantastic gift for a friend or even a tinder hookup that you’re awkwardly trying to woo.

3.5 stars to this hilarious little book.

I adore Tommy Siegel's work and Candy Hearts is so fresh and insightful.. Almost like a Lorde album in its critique of its own themes. I've seen these around on social media but it didn't impact how it still managed to make me sheepish the exact same way months after.

Somehow the formatting of this book and the time set of the quarantine comics makes all the difference in taking these comics from a casual retweet to something More. Will be going back to this each time I feel compelled to get on a dating app. Read this as Valentine's Day approaches to feel smug about your single-ness or something.

This is BRILLIANT. I've never heard of this web comic before, which seems unique! But these are completely hysterical, and amazingly pointed.

I tried finding this comic online, and couldn't, and I am SAD, because I want to read more of these on a daily basis.

These illustrations are hilarious. Anyone who has ever been in a relationship or on the dating scene will find at least one image and think "THIS!" I would probably buy this book for a friend or keep it on the coffee table for guests to laugh at.

Cute comic with candy hearts!

So, this comic collection by Tommy Siegel features a lot of one-panel comics which star Candy Hearts acting as if they are people. On those candy hearts, instead of the sweet things they usually say, are now funny or honest things put to describe the situations. Here and there they made me giggle and overall it was

A light and fun read and had a lovely time. I wished it was a bit longer but I know with art that's usually my craving!

This was hilarious and something I haven't seen before in all the comic memes. I would recommended this to my friends for sure.

Saying the inside on the outside

Candy Hearts by Tommy Siegel is a collection of one panel comics that are about, well, candy hearts. More specifically, looking at love on the inside. I don’t really have a whole lot to say about this book other than it was funny with lots of references to online dating and COVID. It also got me thinking about literature after COVID-19 and how much this even is going to change the face of everything we know. All media is going to be affected, or already has been. It’s really mind-boggling to think that we are living through one of the most historically significant times ever.

All that said, 4/5, 7/10.

Anyway, Candy Hearts is available on February 2nd, 2021, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Thanks again to NetGalley for the eARC!

I've been seeking some comedy in my life lately, and this book was exactly what the doctor ordered.

Candy Hearts by Tommy Siegel is an absolutely hilarious sets of comics featuring conversation hearts that have their thoughts written on them. It's insanely funny and had me chuckling and smirking as I read it. The comics are brutally honest and real (like one heart talking about himself and the other guy half listening but instead thinking about what he's gonna say himself). I seriously loved it! It's hard to find a good comedy book that makes me enjoy it the entire time, but this was it!

I highly recommend this book. If you want something fun, easy to read and completely sassy and sarcastic, this book works. If you just want to read a few little pages at a time, do it. If you want to binge the whole thing, you can! This isn't a book that you need to be glued to, but it's well worth every penny.

Five out of five stars.

Candy Hearts is what I would describe as the perfect short comedic comic to be given as a gift to those you are "not so sure about" or to those who aren't likely to read but understand/enjoy a pop culture joke.
The Author/Illustrators art style is what I most like, it is simple but effective and follows a general pattern.
However, I would only recommend the book for the ages 12-60 as some may not understand the jokes hidden (or not so hidden) in the comics.
Overall, an enjoyable comic with a very cute art style and relatively understandable humour.

“Candy Hearts” is a hilarious collection of comics from author Tommy Siegel. I was laughing the entire time I was reading the book. The author’s graphics are very timely and oh-so relatable, especially with those who are dealing with being single and/or dating during a worldwide pandemic. This book is the perfect Valentine’s gift for a friend or sibling, and a great way to lift your own spirits.

Absolutely delightful!
Siegel captures normal activities and digs to our innermost thoughts, struggles, anxieties and smacks them on a conversation heart. Each frame is relatable - you are bound to be one of the two (three) hearts portrayed.

Genius idea with humor and irony. Very fun to put out on the coffee table and flip through during the month of love.

I received a dARC from the publisher via Netgalley for review. This is my honest opinion.

I laughed, chuckled, snorted, giggled, and snickered at all these spot-on candy hearts! It's amazing how sketches with no faces can express so much in so few words.

Valentine's Day is sneaking up on us again. This year, why waste money on flowers that are only going to wilt, or candy that will . . . well, okay - candy is fine, BUT - instead of throwing your money away on a greeting card filled with sentimental hogwash, why not give this book of comics featuring candy hearts that tell it like it is . . .

Your sweetie will either thank you for your brutal honesty, OR it's the last Valentine's Day that will cost you a dime. It's really just win-win with this collection of comics.

'Candy Hearts' by Tommy Siegel is a collection of comics using candy hearts to show inner thoughts.

The comics are usually a couple candy hearts with inner thoughts about what they are thinking. The humor is in the way the thoughts are so juxtaposed and disparate. Since the figures are heart-shaped, the comics trend more toward relationships and dating.

This is an idea that could seem to run thin, but it doesn't here. There is even a section of comics about the recent quarantine and social distancing included. These were humorous.

I had a lot of fun reading this graphic novel. The strips in here were simple, but many of them made me laugh. The topics they focused on were clever and sometimes pretty relatable too. This may not be a comic for everyone, but some people are sure to enjoy it.

I don’t know anyone who hasn’t found themselves in a situation where they were doing one thing and thinking something entirely different. It’s human to try to hide our true feelings if they’ll hurt someone else or embarrass us. So when someone comes along and points it out, it’s a little awkward. It’s irreverent. And it’s so incredibly, unbelievably funny!

Artist Tommy Siegel got inspired by the traditional conversational candy hearts that we have all loved since childhood and created a series of cartoons that show what’s going on in our heads that we hide from others. Candy Hearts go hard after dating, from what happens with online dating and dating apps to the dates themselves. He exposes what we’re really thinking in relationships, in families, in restaurants, and while live-tweeting disaster dates.

It’s not just relationships he goes after. Nothing in pop culture is safe. Siegel also has comics about Titanic, the pandemic, Batman and Robin, Beauty and the Beast, catfishing, Starbucks, the Beatles, politics, and Casablanca. He skewers it all, showing us all at our worst, our funniest, and our most human.

Candy Hearts is a short and succinct, but it makes for a great gift for anyone needing a laugh for Valentine’s Day, or for any other moment. It’s not appropriate for kids, but adults (especially those of us who might be labeled “somewhat immature,”) will find these laugh-out-loud funny. Perfect for sharing with friends and family with similarly twisted senses of humor and well developed senses of irony.

Egalleys for Candy Hearts were provided by Andrew McMeel Publishing through NetGalley, with many thanks.

A series of one panel comics centering on relationships using conversation hearts to tell inner thoughts. They are often quite wry and biting. It's a quick, humorous read.

Nothing quite like candy hearts to make you feel so seen. Just the perfect length for a little laugh when you need a pick me up (and let's face it, who doesn't need a pick me up these days?) I am forever waiting for a quiet moment to check my phone and Candy Hearts has proven that I am not the only one. The two pages of stickers are a bonus surprise. 10/10 would recommend.

This book is really cute. I see this illustrators work all over Instagram, but I think valentines would be a great time for a reemergence of his candy heart comics. This book is fun. I think a lot of these compilations are really pretty cute online, and transferring them to book is just the natural result of selling ones work

This is a hilarious collection of comics featuring anthropomorphic candy hearts. They feature different kinds of love, such as romantic love and parental love. Each page featured a different story and a different set of candy hearts. The comics were also quite contemporary because they talked about dating during the pandemic.

In many of the comics, the two characters had opposite feelings, such as the two that rode a tandem bike. One loved it and the other was embarrassed. In other comics, the characters secretly had the same feelings, such as the two that were being separated and pretended to be sad but were secretly glad that they could finally watch what they wanted on TV.

Some of the comics referenced famous romantic stories and fairytales. There were references to Titanic and Romeo and Juliet. I liked the comic of Beauty and the Beast, which mentioned Stockholm Syndrome. One of my favourite sets of comics were the ones based on online app dating profiles. It showed different examples of photos, including one at a wedding, one with a child, and one with a group of people so you can’t tell which one is the actual person in the profile. These were hilarious because they were so accurate.

I loved this comic collection! I highly recommend it as a Valentine’s gift!

A hilarious collection of comics that puts a what we're thinking out in the open. These comics made me laugh and made me cringe. The ones referencing Covid-19 caused me to yell "I'm not ready for Pandemic Jokes yet." (They were very true though.) Overall, a solid collection of comics gear specifically and solidly toward the Millennial (and maybe Gen X) crowd.

the good:
- honestly kind of a genius concept to illustrate inner monologues
- if you like relatable humorous illustrations, you'll love this
- a very super quick read
- you'll most likely be reminded of a friend or someone you know from one of these drawings which may prompt you to want to share it with them

the eh:
- there were a few covid-19 related images that stood out to me - but not in a good way. i almost felt like (eventually) when this pandemic ends and (if) things "go back to normal" these comics will not really be as universally relatable as the rest of them. but then again it's not like every single one of these illustrations will be relatable to every reader.
- if you tend to get bored of the same concept repeated over and over again then you won't like this
