Description

Nepotism, avarice and lunacy were synonymous with the Adelnorn’s dynasty for decades. The Lord’s tribulations went unheeded, commoners forgotten, and subraces spit upon. Whispers even placed commanders of the King’s legions murmuring desertion. So when a harsh, hapless winter thawed to a tepid spring, it came as no surprise that it coincided with war. Yet none supposed they rallied for invaders.

Contrary to his majesties disparaging of the dutiful, the Shingo’s showered every triumph in exuberant festivity. Styling themselves ‘chosen’ conqueror’s, they landed on the northern tip of the continent and in little over a year had three countries kneeling. As they marched south from Albarezz, brash and emboldened, victory over an unprepared Martlhor appeared ever certain. Five years have gone by, and though reports vary on who is at advantage, it remains absolute that both sides are battered, bloodied and woefully stubborn.

The overarching conflict is not the focus of this narrative but it serves to set the stage. Instead this story concerns the neglected, abandoned remnants of a country grappling to maintain order in a world devolving into anarchy. It centers around a small town in the heart of the Westlands, and seven outcasts who are family not by blood but by choice. It’s about a thug, a soldier, a con, a hero, a front, a flower, and a genius. And lastly it’s about how a single mistake can change everything.

"""A country gripped by anarchy, a small town rife with conjecture, and seven figures of questionable morality. Everything is going right for the nameless group who composes this stories center, until they run afoul on a job from some bad information, and inadvertently create a ruthless enemy. Meanwhile their leader, Cyrus Donut, is haunted by tracking a person from his past guilty of crimes against his family. Keith Monarek, the group’s main enforcer, tries and fails to balance his ego when posed against his want for power. The ‘damsel of distress,’ Andrea, dons a tough exterior like steel plating, as she continues running from her past of being abused and trafficked as a child. Throw in the arrogant son of a Lord, a pair of triplet refugees fleeing from the under siege Salamander City, a hard-headed orphan with nothing to his name but skills with the blade, and a self-exiled Lord of a sacked city, and you have the makings of a compelling narrative that makes this book hard to put down.

The strength of this narrative lies within the seven characters, who are a very unconventional idea of family and yet they mesh together so naturally that I never questioned for a moment whether they belonged together. It’s rich in content, has near perfect pacing and has a fair amount of action. It dabbles in the political and at times floors you with the fantastical.

As I am in the midst of a second read through, I really came to appreciate all the little bread crumbs the author sprinkles throughout his chapters. They are quite easy to gloss over (at least for me) but it is making my revisiting to the world of Martlhor that much more enjoyable the second time around. This is worth a read for anyone who is a fan of fantasy fiction or action and adventure. I can’t wait for the next one."" - Josh S."
