Description

It’s no secret that America is facing a health crisis of epidemic proportions, especially with our young people. North American children, and those in much of Western Europe, are failing to meet basic standards of physical fitness and as a result, are growing increasingly sick. This affects not only their lifespan, but also the quality of that limited life. Thirty percent of children are overweight, with twenty percent meeting the criteria for obesity., and will essentially be the first generation in history who will have a shorter lifespan than their parents. If obesity was an infectious disease like the flu, it would be front page news.

Noted orthopedic surgeon, sports medicine doctor, and sports psychologist Dr. Daniel Fulham O’Neill’s interest in obesity started early in his career while studying its effect on knees and other weight-bearing joints. He soon realized this was not just a middle-aged problem and that lack of activity is endemic for a large portion of our youth. Over the last 30+ years, Dr. O’Neill has built a successful medical practice and revolutionary educational platform that is transforming today’s approach to children’s fitness, and he’s been on a serious mission to get children healthier and happier through maintaining what he calls their “physical identity” for life.

In his new book Survival of the Fit: How Physical Education Ensures Academic Achievement and a Healthy Life (Teachers College Press/Columbia University; January 2021), Dr. O’Neill provides a guide and template for a revolution regarding physical education (PE) and sports in our nation’s schools that will change the way we consider, program and fund PE. A must-have resource that will ensure the health of the next generation of children as they negotiate this increasingly complex world that is moving far faster than human evolution, Survival of the Fit provides a roadmap for parents and educators to create breakthrough change and explores actionable and meaningful topics such as:

● Why this the first generation in history to have a shorter lifespan than the last.

● Physical Identity and the primitive brain.

● Children and identity: the athlete / non-athlete divide.

● How the lack of youth fitness is costing society billions.

● Evidence-based physical education: why “rebranding” is needed.

● The importance fitness plays in STEM education.

● PE: Why it is needed for every child, every day, every year of school.

● Restoring youth competitive sports to community control.

● How to win the war against the addiction to bad food and two-dimensional entertainment.

“My goal in writing this book was to introduce numerous positive, available, scientifically based, workable solutions to the present health crisis,” Dr. O’Neill says. “With all due respect to the huge efforts by thousands of people, from Michelle Obama on down, nothing to this point has significantly changed the trajectory of fitness and health in America. We need a new path. We need to allow our children to embrace their physical identity, to be fit, to be curious, to be active.” Weaving together persuasive data, science, and history, Survival of the Fit sounds the alarm regarding America’s health crisis, and explains how we can use the tools, knowledge, and the existing infrastructure to make positive changes with immediate results for students in every school, not just the lucky few.
