Charlotte needs a bodyguard to protect her while she drops off her manuscripts to her publisher. She hires Blayne, a rough and tumble Scotsman. When forced to become her fake fiancé, Blayne hopes his past deeds do not come out to harm them. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.

Charlotte's secret profession as a writer of slightly scandalous novels sees her travelling through dodgy places in London, so she decides to hire Blayne (who looks rather dodgy himself!) to escort her. Blayne has every intention of ending their arrangement - and yet, still finds himself pretending to be Charlotte's fiancé when she asks it of him. But more than their hearts are at risk if Blayne's past catches up with him.

I wanted this book to last forever. It combined so many of my favourite elements - Scottish scoundrel with a heart of gold, woman secretly making a living as an author, said woman owning a pistol, a shrewd opponent as the other suitor, lovable side characters, dark family past, etc. I could go on. Basically, this was exactly my kind of romance. I adored Charlotte and Blayne as characters, especially together! I will certainly be checking out Barnes' other novels.

Riveting and adventurous and of course steamy all the things you look for in a historical romance.

When Charlotte hires Blayne to be her bodyguard and then fake-fiancée, she never intends to fall for him. Charlotte wants to remain unattached and pursue her writing dreams. Blayne has never wanted love in his life either until he sees Charlotte, and she captivates him with her intellect, beauty, and fiery spirit.

Blayne and Charlotte enter into their fake-engagement certain that it will remain fake, and they will part ways once Charlotte makes enough money to live independently. Charlotte’s family doesn’t approve of the pairing, especially considering they arranged a union between Charlotte and one of their American business associates. Plus, Blayne and Charlotte both have secrets that they’re afraid to share. However, when secrets from Blayne’s past come back to haunt him and threaten his future with Charlotte, both must decide if their love is worth fighting for. Can this mismatched pair find their happily-ever-after?

I love Charlotte!! She is smart and brave, and she refuses to become beholden to a man. She yearns for independence and the freedom to pursue her literary goals. She also rejects the rules of society and instead follows her own set of rules. I love that she marches to the beat of her own drum even though she is judged harshly for it, especially by her own family. Charlotte is often underestimated because of her gender, but she repeatedly proves that she is as (if not more) strong and resilient as the men in her life. I love her take-charge attitude and passionate spirit, as well as her kindness.

However, Charlotte is helpless in many ways and has no one to turn to. She is a woman in a patriarchal society and family, and this limits her choices. Charlotte dislikes the society that her parents have forced her to be a part of and wishes for something more. She is a woman ahead of her time, which is one of the qualities that draws Blayne to her.

Blayne is one of the few people to really see Charlotte, understand her, and support her. The pair brings out the best in each other, and their characters are dynamically developed. Unfortunately, Blayne doesn’t feel like he is good enough for Charlotte. She is wealthy, and he is not. He has deadly secrets in his past, and he doesn’t want to burden her with his problems. Though he had a privileged upbringing, he does not live a life of privilege, and he is not a part of the ton like Charlotte. Luckily, Charlotte does not care.

I absolutely love the romance between Charlotte and Blayne! It is deep and passionate, filled with sexual tension, and lovely. Blayne admires Charlotte’s fiery, independent spirit and take-charge personality from the moment he first lays eyes on her. Their connection is amazing, and though they are from different worlds and are opposites in many ways, they complement each other well. I love their intellectual discussions, their shared love of literature, their continual efforts to find time to spend together, and their mutual desires to lead lives that are very different from what people expect. Two independent people who don’t quite fit into the expectations and standards of society, their respect for, attraction to, and support of each other makes for an epic romance! I also love that they save each other at different points in the story. It says so much about the characters and about their relationship. From the beginning, they have a partnership and are equals in every way.

I also like many of the secondary characters, especially Charlotte’s maid and Blayne’s friends. They are a wonderful support system and prove that family doesn’t always include blood relations. Hopefully, we’ll see more of them in future books in the series!

The mystery of Blayne’s past, as well as the mystery of Charlotte’s stolen manuscript, are intriguing and add suspense to this captivating romance. Will we find out what Blayne did in the past? Who stole Charlotte’s manuscript? Will Charlotte’s parents get their way and marry Charlotte off to one of their business associates?

Secrets, a fake engagement, stolen manuscripts, a murky past, and a sexy romance make for a well-paced and captivating read. I think people who enjoy historical romances will love this addition to the Diamonds in the Rough series, and though it is the fifth book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Sophie Barnes for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

***Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***
A typical Regency romance that quickly grabbed my attention. There were a few errors that made me cringe, however. At one point the character's name is changed to Louise (just for one sentence) and then the love interest is referred to by the wrong name as well. Minor errors that I'm sure will be fixed before publication, but frustrating all the same.

3.5 stars rounded up.

Even knowing he shouldn’t, Blayne MacNeil can’t seem to help himself when he agrees to act as bodyguard to Miss Charlotte Russell. He’s suitably shocked when he arrives to tell her he can’t help her after all, only to have her announce him as her new fiancé. Blayne has been in hiding for nearly 20 years and announcing an engagement, no matter how inauthentic, could prove deadly. If he’s recognized by the wrong people, it could lead to a murder charge.

Charlotte has met with some success as a published novelist and is determined to establish her independence and avoid marriage. Since no respectable society gentleman would tolerate his wife writing adventure stories, she must thwart her parents’ plans to marry her off. When her newest manuscript is stolen, her brooding fake fiancé is her staunchest ally and the greatest threat to her freedom.

I’ve got some mixed feelings here. I loved the premise of the bodyguard turned fake fiancé, but beyond that there was such a plethora of other plot devices and elements in use that it got to be a bit much. This made the story feel a bit hectic at times while at others the pacing was rather slow. I found my attention span wavered similarly as well.

From here on, you chance some mild spoilers as I get my thoughts out. Charlotte took some getting used to, especially as some of her thought processes were a little nonsensical and she could be rather arrogant, but I generally liked her and appreciated her determination to fight for Blayne and not let him push her away. Yet, conversely, as her parents kept finding new obstacles for her, she at one point nearly just meekly gave up, and this seemed out of character. There was just a lot going on here, so some things weren’t fleshed out as much as they perhaps could’ve been while others received a bit too much attention. I wanted more of a real comeuppance for the villain here and a true clearing of Blayne’s name and his restoration to his rightful place. Instead, it left me feeling like the victory was rather hollow and there was just too much crammed into the story.

With all of these occurrences, our MCs don’t get any steamy time together until nearly the end of the story and even then, it was quite tepid. I can enjoy a good slow burn, but this was rather too little and too late for me, as well as somehow lessening the true connection between the MCs. I think this could’ve been more poignant and emotional than it was, especially given everything Blayne had suffered, and I wanted the MCs to get at least a little more time together without outside characters, threats, or other situations to deal with, so this felt like a missed opportunity. The back and forth with Charlotte’s parents also got old fast. They were so awful and wishy-washy and I just wanted Charlotte to be decisive in her interactions with them and stick to her guns rather than giving them further opportunities to hurt her or cause issues. I also wanted to see more of Carlton Guthrie stepping up to help Blayne, a man who is supposed to be like a brother to him, rather than leaving the situation in the hands of his own brother-in-law just when Blayne needed him the most. I understand this was useful to set up Marcus’ story, which I do look forward to, but after everything Blayne had done for Carlton, I wanted to see that relationship come a bit more full circle. Overall, this has elements I loved and others not so much. The writing was solid, and I liked these two as a couple, but their journey felt rather discombobulated and lacked sufficient gratification to leave me wholly satisfied with the ending.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This novel was beyond charming and delightful! Sophie Barnes' writing has an ease to it that was instantly accessible and drew me into the world. A lovely romance was at the center of this fast paced novel that clipped along with intriguing plot lines and external conflicts. I was rooting for this romance from the first moment the hero and heroine meet and I was swept away in their love for each other.

Charlotte (the heroine) is bold, independent, a dreamer, a hard worker and steadfast. She is a writer and she initially hires Blayne, the hero, as a body guard after she is robbed in the streets of St. Giles. Blayne is a brawny Scotsman, who is hard working and completely taken with Charlotte, so even when he tries to cry out of their original arrangement he is constantly drawn back into her sphere. This novel morphs quickly into a fake dating/fiancee trope that leads to great tension and delightful proximity, as Charlotte and Blayne try to outwit her parents and fight their budding feelings for one another.

These two are an absolute delight to watch as they both claim to not want to marry while constantly suppressing feelings of attraction and interest for the other. Luckily about half way through the novel they have both come to terms with their feelings and the conflicts surrounding them are more outward facing and we get to see how their love, trust and devotion for each other will make them a strong couple.

I was absolutely in love with their story from the moment it started. Watching Charlotte and Blayne learn to trust and love each other with their secrets and dreams was so beautiful. I loved watching the strength each of them had when it came to fighting for the other. I love that even though these two are from different social standings they ultimately respected and loved the other for their true selves and not the worth that society deemed they had.

I highly recommend this novel, especially if you love a strong hero and heroine, who are head over heels in love with each other, who are endlessly supportive of the other, who see the true value in each other and who know exactly how to help the other succeed in their goals.

I really enjoyed this. I appreciated how independent Charlotte was and how fiercely protective Blayne was. There was a lot happening, but for myself, it worked, adding to the drama and the adventure. It wasn't as sensual as one might expect with just glimmers of seduction - a lot of chemistry, but not a lot of actual passionate scenes (only one, actually, that I recall beyond some encounters set short. I was okay with that, but it was unexpected. It was the perfect pick me up on a gloomy day.

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC :)

After being accosted on a visit to her publisher, Charlotte Russell decides the best option she can take is to hire a bodyguard. Upon meeting Blayne MacNeil, she knows he is perfect for the job. Sadly, Charlotte’s father has plans for her future which involves her married to a rich American. To avoid the impending match, Charlotte announces she’s already engaged.....to Blayne.

Charlotte as a character was great! As an author, she is intelligent, well-spoken, and independent. Her family, who are part of the aristocracy, aren’t aware of her writing career, but she still hopes to live out her future alone and just writing all day. Blayne on the other hand has spent the last 19 years going by an assumed name to avoid his past and the law. He's rough around the edges but has his hidden depths. Both of the characters work well together and are very likable.

Sophie Barnes truly is a great writer. I have read many of her works before (and most of this series). This book can definitely be read as a standalone, but of course, many characters tend to cross over. Overall, this book did not disappoint. The storytelling is well done and exciting. Her writing is extremely visual and rousing as well. One thing I did note is that there was a decided lack of steamy scenes, especially compared to Barnes’ previous work. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing! I think there may have just been too much plot happening to even try including them. There were probably about 5 different plotlines. I don’t think all of them were necessary, but I didn’t mind it.

Liked all the other books in the series I really enjoyed this one.
Charlotte has been writing novels under a pseudonym and now needs someone to serve as protection into the speedier parts of the city.
Blayne wants nothing than to own a small plot of land where he can grow his plants and serving as Charlotte's bodyguard will get him that much closer.
But Blayne has a secret he is keeping and when he is forced to pretend to be a fiancé he can't help falling for Charlotte and vice versa.
I love Blayne. He was sweet and kind. I also liked Charlotte's independence.
Can't wait for what comes next.

It's the first time I've read a Regency Romance that keeps me glued to the story page after page.
.
The characters have great chemistry between them that makes the story flow without falling into the hackneyed or expected plot twist.
.
Blaney has a past that haunts him and Charlotte has a secret to protect, they both know each other minds and are clear about their ambitions and what they want for their future but their attraction to each other makes them act without remorse and step in to the other life.
.
I was surprised that there were so many elements and it kept me interested until the end. The characters have well planted minds making one understand their conflicts and dilemmas without fail, it really is the first Regency writer who makes me understand why there are so many passionate readers of this genre.
.
It was my first Sophie Barnes book but not the last, i'll be looking forward to read more works from her
.
Thanks to BookBuzz.net and Sophie Barnes to give me the chance to read this great book in exchange for my honest review

I loved this book. The characters are very colorful. Charlotte is a young lady who has figured out how to get what she wants within the boundaries of society. Blayne is a wounded hero worthy of a woman’s love. The two find their way to each other through a series of misadventures, some of their own making. I couldn’t put it down and can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Both of them intend to avoid marriage.
Charlotte pens outrageous novels that are best-selling under a pen name that is male. She intended to never marry and live in a cottage as a spinster.
Blayne agrees to be her body guard the is roped into becoming her fake fiance. Will this be the death of him?
Sophia Barnes writes a scintillating novel.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

I haven't read the other books in the series but after this one I am going to back track and read the others. I really enjoyed this book. Although it was slow in parts the pace did quick up at times in the story. The plot touches on the era very well and highlights how times have changed now.

I absolutely adored this book and am so excited to have it on my Favorite Books of 2021 list! It's got all of the things I love - class difference, fake engagement, and a bit of murder thrown in for added drama. Oh, and did I mention the secret identity? So many amazing tropes in one book, and it all came together so nicely. Although this is the seventh (!) book in the series, and the first one I have read, I had no trouble getting to know the old characters and understanding where the hero is coming from with his backstory. It made me really interested in reading the previous six books, which I am sure are just as entertaining as this one. There's something about the way Sophie Barnes wrote the hero and heroine that made me wish they were real - and when I want to jump into a book to meet the characters, I know the book is a keeper!

Blayne MacNeil has a plan. He is going to take the money he saved up over the years, buy some land in the country, and have a quiet life with the freedom to do what he loves. Of course, that was his plan, until he met Charlotte Russell. You see, Charlotte has an entirely different plan in mind for Blayne. One that involves him going by a completely different name, Mr. Wright, a fake engagement to keep her parents' eligible suitor at bay, and a future as a successful novelist living as a spinster somewhere until she's old and gray. She comes into Blayne's life with a sort of wild fervor, and while she finds her deceit regrettable, it is necessary. As they are forced into each other's company to maintain the charade, Blayne finds himself more and more committed to protecting Charlotte. He wants her to be happy, safely settled, and without the shackles of an arranged marriage. Marriage to him is impossible, as he has been on the run. For the last twenty years. For murder. Not that he plans on Charlotte, or anyone else, finding out. Ah, the best laid plans...

I loved Blayne and Charlotte so much, there are not enough words to express my adoration of them both. Blayne was a sweetheart, protective of Charlotte and unafraid to be candid with her in his thoughts. It was hilarious in the beginning, as he had no intention of going along with her schemes, and then he found himself roped into them anyway. His friends' reactions were also funny, and it made me want to read their stories, to get to know them better as well. Charlotte was an amazingly strong woman, with great awareness of herself and her strengths. She understood when she was wrong and she fought for herself when she was right. Her secret employment as an author was inspiring, and I felt as devastated as she did when things went wrong. And then I loved Blayne all the more for his reaction to learning who she was. Oh, and Blayne enjoys plants and books. When I tell you I literally sighed when I read that about him, I am not lying. Was there ever a more adorable hero created? And I'll go farther, was there ever a more adorable couple? I'm sure there are contenders, but Blayne and Charlotte are definitely at the top of my list.

Sophie Barnes gives us a hint at the end of the book who the next hero will be, and I'm so excited to read his story! Now I just need to go back and read the first six books while I wait...

Society lady Charlotte hires scoundrel-with-a-heart-of-gold Blayne to be her bodyguard so she can continue her secret writing career. When she also asks him to be her fake fiance to get out of her parents' matchmaking, sparks fly.

I loved this story and these characters, and while the usual regency romance tropes were out to play, Barnes makes them feel fresh and exciting so that I was rooting for both Charlotte and Blayne from the very beginning. There's playful banter, steamy kisses, a dark past, heroes that won't allow the behavioral strictures of the time to prevent them from being together; it has all of the good things!

This is one of my new favorite romances and I'm excited to read more of Sophie Barnes's books.

I've always felt like Sophie Barnes does an excellent job with characters and their dialogue, and that made Her Scottish Scoundrel such a fun read! Charlotte is an secret adventure novel writer who needs a bodyguard, and hires Blayne, a big Scottish hunk. Then, through a few unfortunate circumstances, he ends up having to pretend to be engaged to her to keep her from marrying a rich American who only wants a titled wife.

The lost book mystery was a fun change of pace from other historical romances. I liked its originality. I really liked Blayne, but he was kind of a generic Scottish hero. I know his background is a secret, but I think he should've had more background up front. At least enough to get me interested in him as a person.

Charlotte, on the other hand, was an absolute joy! I'm used to feisty heroines, but she had a brazen gumption that I ADORED. She wouldn't take no for an answer, loves to write, and loves Blayne fiercely and quickly. I also LOVE her reaction to her father's rejection of Blayne. That takes guts and I was so proud of her. She is everything I want in a heroine.

I received "Her Scottish Scoundrel" from Netgalley and voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.  Charlotte Russell is in need of a bodyguard because she sometimes visits a not so nice place in town for personal reasons so she decides to hire one from the Black Swan, a tavern. Blayne MacNeil happens to be the owner of Black Swan and is stunned by the audacity as well as the courage of Miss Russell to stand up for herself while interviewing candidates at his bar. He volunteers himself at the end, and then there are a series of unexpected lies that they keep building on to hide their true identities and their pasts. I absolutely loved the wit, humor and banter in this fabulous story. Sophie Barnes has done an extraordinary job in weaving this tale while incorporating love, romance and mystery.

Twists and turns abound in this lovely historical romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of strong independent woman and her Scottish rogue. With unexpected plot Twists throughout, Her Scottish Scoundrel keeps the reader guessing.

Her Scottish Scoundrel by Sophie Barnes is a romance which I have read with gusto. It has all of the elements which I look for in a romance. This is from the characters to the tropes used. To start of the story was simple yet chaotic in the end. However, this worked for me since everything did fall into place. I love both main characters Charlotte was independent but does know when to back down. While Blayne is as of now the best hero. He plants, reads books which is contrary to his looks. His character is deeper than the dark, brooding rogue. I like that despite this, he is gentle and considerate of Charlotte. Their relationship is one of loyalty despite not trusting each other at first. A lot of scandals have come their way but both help each other. The whole story is both situation and character-driven. I love how the author executed this story. It could be just the regular damsel in distress but it was made better. If given the opportunity, I would buy a physical copy just to reread it again.

Despite my raving review, I still gave it a 4.5 heart rating. This is because I would have liked it to have an epilogue. Knowing a happily ever after was due but was not written does not seem final for me. However, this does not stop me from loving the story. In consolation, the next story which has Marcus as the lead is next. It is The Dishonored Viscount and I would love to read it too. Again, it was a good read. It made me smile and laugh a lot. I love Charlotte and Blayne, their chemistry is the best.

Hidden secrets and longings of the heart—Blayne and Charlotte take us through a page turning journey to find both. Of course it is the character of each that truly captures your devotion. Who doesn’t love a scoundrel with a compassionate heart or a lady restricted by society who breaks free? Of course, I’ve never read anything by Sophie Barnes that didn’t inspire me snd leave me in my happy place!

Blayne MacNeil has been hiding in plain sight for nearly 20 years because of an event that took place in his youth that involved his father. He runs a tavern in St. Giles and keeps a low profile to keep the law from finding him. Miss Charlotte Russell has a secret of her own and needs a bodyguard to help protect her when she visits her publisher. Her parents have no idea about her writing and plan to marry her off to a wealthy American industrialist. Charlotte is horrified and enlists Blayne to play her fake fiance as well as her bodyguard. When their worlds start to collide, can they protect each other from the worst happening?

I really enjoyed this book and loved that Charlotte was a writer and had a bestseller. She has never wanted to marry enjoying her independence too much. She plans to buy a cottage in the country when she's saved enough except love has a way of thwarted all plans. Blayne was such a stand-up guy who helped Charlotte with everything and had no intention of falling in love with her. I immediately knew who the villain was when Charlotte's publishing company was robbed and her latest manuscript stolen and didn't care for the resolution of that subplot. I also prefer to have an epilogue about the couple and not a preview of the next book. Those 2 criticisms brought the book down to 4 stars for me although neither dampened my enjoyment of the overall story. Ms. Barnes throws enough twists and turns into the story that kept me turning the pages.

Charlotte Russell is a writer, who publishes under an alias who plans to never marry. One day after collecting her earnings from her publishing home is robbed, so she decides she needs a bodyguard and Blayne MacNeil is the perfect person for
the job.
But when she's informed by her parents that they set her marriage with an American businessman, she promotes Blayne to her fiancé.

I really enjoyed this book, even though on some parts I felt the pace was a bit rushed. Charlotte and Blayne were great leading characters. Both of them sacrificed something important for each other but in the end they were rewarded.

This my first book of the author and I'm planning on reading the rest of the series as well.
I received a free ARC and these are my honest opinions.

Charlotte is a very admirable character. Not only is this romantic but it has a good deal of suspense which makes it entertaining, intriguing and shocking. There's a lot going on with both characters but I think they are great for each other, it will take some time to fully detangle this web of deceit but love will always find a way.

The seventh book in the Diamonds in the Rough series finds us back at the Black Swan, now run by Carlton Guthrie’s partner, the rough and tumble Scot, Blayne MacNeil. Who, coincidentally is whom our heroine, Miss Charlotte Russell talks into begging her personal bodyguard.

Who doesn’t love a good bodyguard trope?!?! Well, if that wasn’t good enough, this story quickly adds on a fake engagement for good measure!

I loved both Charlotte and Blayne and their development of their relationship. These two are perfect for each other. My heart squeezed when Blayne needs to up the anti to rescue Charlotte from an unwanted marriage arranged by er father, and then again when Charlotte rescues Blayne from trouble from his past! They literally saved each other!

This book had good pacing and kept me reading late into the night! Readers of this series will be very happy with the character cameos from past books, like Guthrie (My favourite hero from the series), and new to the series readers will love this fun romance on its own!

Her Scottish Scoundrel by Sophie Barnes is scheduled to release May 25th, 2021.

After being robbed on the street, Charlotte hires Blayne to act as her bodyguard when she ventures out of Mayfair. But when her father tries to arrange an unwanted marriage for her, she adds a new role to Blayne's duties: fake fiancé. When their pretend relationship turns all too real, will ghosts from Blayne's past come between them?

This fast-paced romance is one adventure after another. Charlotte is a strong, determined heroine, and Blayne is her perfect match. This one kept me guessing until the end.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

I received an ARC through Netgalley, but I was already a fan of Sophie Barnes. This story is about Charlotte Russell, daughter of a viscount who writes under the name Charles Cunningham, and Blayne McMacneil, a bar owner in St Giles convinced to play Ms. Russell’s fiance under the name Mr. Wright to discourage a Mr. Carlisle, to whom Charlotte’s father has promised her hand in marriage. In case that’s not confusing enough, neither MacNeil nor Wright are his actual name, which is not revealed until late in the story.

Although not perfectly edited, it was an ARC so I can let that slide. However, at one point, Charlotte’s name was Louise, indicating an oversight that I seriously hope was caught prior to publication. The writing is not poetic or flowery, but the story is well told and enjoyable, and it’s an unusual plot. Overall, I really liked it and I would have to recommend it.

No spoiler review

This is the seventh book in the diamonds in the rough series, however this reads as a great standalone. I wasn’t confused about anything, this being my first book read by this author.

This book was excellently written and kept me entertained throughout! The plot and settings were so interesting to read! A lot of twists and turns! I love Blayne he really understand our heroine and wants her to have her independence/freedom in the world.

Their banter and relationship is so cute. I smiled and laughed at many moments in this book. The knife throwing scene I loved especially. Just these two characters had such fun together and I loved it.

I’ll for sure want to read more from this author as well as from this series!

Sophie Barnes has done such a great job of creating stories that all connect in some way while still being their own unique tales. I started this series with the Forgotten Duke, so I met Blayne for the first time in that novel. It was nice to see him get his happily ever after and to find out what his story was. His and Charlotte's romance was well crafted and went beyond the typical "pretend engagement to real lovers" trope. The fact that he was a fan of her novels only further showed they were meant for one another. The twist involving how he gets out of trouble with the law was amusing and a nice way around having to have him actually be acquitted (since we all know that it was not going to be a fair trial). The mystery surrounding who stole her manuscript was a little predictable, but that part of the story is so minor I am more than willing to overlook it. Overall, this was another great entry into this series!

Miss Charlotte Russell needs a bodyguard after she's mugged & who better than Blayne MacNeil, he doesn't expect her to expand the job description to fake fiancé. After twenty years in hiding, announcing his engagement to a viscount's daughter could prove fatal. For if anyone were to recognize him, he'd be charged with murder. Determined to keep her independence in order to safeguard her writing career, Charlotte must avoid marriage. After all, no respectable gentleman would ever permit his wife to pen outrageous adventure novels. But when her most recent manuscript disappears, the roguish Scotsman posing as her fiancé becomes her closest ally and the greatest threat to her freedom.
The seventh book in this lovely series & another well written page turner, which for 97% of it was easily a five star read, I loved both Blayne & Charlotte & their road to a HEA was highly entertaining & I loved the obstacles in their journey, I didn’t like the outcome of Blayne's journey to Scotland whilst the reason for the outcome was very clever I felt he was cheated. I loved the chemistry between Blayne & Charlotte & how their relationship changed & developed. I disliked Charlotte’s parents & I certainly wouldn't have been so forgiving. A lovely slow burn romance.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Her Scottish Scoundrel is the seventh book in the Diamonds in the Rough series. I have not read any of the other books and series and did not feel as if it took away from the overall story or that there were too many spoilers that would create issues.
The story follows an intrepid woman, Miss Charlotte Russell's, who is ready to embrace her spinsterhood despite the fact that her parents still have hope that she will get married. Of course they don't know her secret that she pens stories under a assumed name and is biding her time to acquire a cottage in the countryside. She has no desire to marry and give up her independence to a man. When faced with a dangerous situation she decides to hire a bodyguard.
Blayne MacNeil agrees to be her bodyguard but quickly realizes that it won't work to the secrets he's keeping. Of course all that goes out the window when Charlotte informs him of a plan to thwart her parents. When he realizes that he cannot walk away from her and taking the steps to protect her could uncover his secret. He is intrigued by Charlotte and determined to protect her even if it's from himself.

The Scottish Scoundrel is one of the first books I have read by Sophie Barnes and I must say that I truly enjoyed the story overall. I was intrigued about how Blayne and Charlotte would reach their HEA.

I am trash for the heroes that feel they are unworthy of the heroine and that is Blayne for sure. Charlotte is a solid heroine but I struggled with her a little. I don’t know that I truly connected with her as much as I would have liked to through her story. I would have liked more deeper character development from her but she was still a strong heroine.

Overall, the characters were interesting and the story was captivating. I did have a moment where I didn’t buy the direction of the plot but for romance reasons, I accepted it and moved on. Also, I wasn’t sure how I should feel about Charlotte’s family throughout the story either (but that is just me being picky).

I can’t wait for the next story (Marcus & Louise)! I plan to see if I can go back and read the previous books to help me since I love a series! 😇

Blaine MacNeil owns a tavern in St. Giles. He has a very dark secret. He is tall, handsome, Scot, and had caramel eyes. She had just hired him to protect her when she had to go out on errands.
Miss Charlotte Russell is the daughter of a viscount. Her two younger sisters are married and gone from home. She wants to buy a small cottage and have women of like mind join her. No men needed.
Neither wish to marry. She is also a writer of mysteries and believes no man would allow her to write. There are some surprises in this story. It is enchanting and has excellent characters. There are some distinct bad guys. But it has enough excitement and entertainment enough to keep it interesting. It is really hard to put down. The author has done a great job of engaging your mind.
I received this ARC from Net Galley and voluntarily reviewed it.

I just love this series! One just can’t wait for the next book. This time back in the Black Swan, Blayne. has taken running of the tavern since Guthrie the new Duke of Windham has gotten married. In walks a beauty who takes his breath away. Seeing that one of his customers getting overly friendly with her, Blayne comes to her rescue only to realize she can take care of herself. Charlotte has come to the seedier part of London looking to hire a bodyguard and the man in front of her has potential.
Both have secrets, both are not what the Ton think they are, both feel a attraction. A page turner with mysteries involved. One was predictable, the ending surprising.

A marvelously written story. Charlotte wants to be an independent woman. She is trying to earn her own money and has no intention of losing her independence by getting married. She is strong will and witty. Blayne is a man trying to survive. He is trying to envision a new life for himself. Sophie Barnes writes stories that you can lose yourself in. Her characters pack a lot of punch as they are solid and well developed. They are fierce and loyal to the people they care about. Despite all the odds stacked against them, they can rise up and make the best of the situation. This makes them relatable and memorable.

Charlotte has given up on marriage, instead planning to move away to the countryside and write novels -under a pen name of course. When she is accosted on her way home from her publisher, she hires a body guard.

Blayne is running from his past, trying to make a new life for himself. When Charlotte offers him an obscene amount of money to be her body guard, he knows he'd be stupid to refuse. Only this job turns out to be much more than he expected.

I love love loved this book. Well written, engaging, original. Amazing.

Not really ~spicy~ if that's what you're looking for, more of a slowburn for sure.

Will their differences in status and his past tear them apart ...

Wow, what a rollercoaster ride, it is no mn stop action story, there is no pause in this book, it is one event after another.
Charlotte is a heroine as I love them, she is blunt, honest, takes no prisoner and has learned to adapt to her circumstances. Even if at one time or two, it felt like she was giving up, yet when it mattered the more, she endorse her knight armor and assail the villain.
She has made a life for herself and is close to her goal, until her parents decide to uproot everything she has worked for and wipe out her freedom. Thus it is how she has to jump to a fake betrothal to avoid the marriage her father is so set about.
On thing is sure, she won’t give up on her dreams.
Blayne had to recreate himself some two decades ago, and he successfully established himself as someone to not cross in the worst parts of the city. So when awed by a fearless lady, he unwillingly finds himself hired as a bodyguard and then engaged in a sham betrothal. He could have walked away but he is bewitched by this bold and daring Miss.

Their journey toward their happily ever after is one with many bumps, holes and dents. So while I found the betrothal as it is the major plot well developed and I would have like to be a mouse to observe Cooper and his new bride getting together, the stolen manuscript part was left aside for too long then too hurriedly resolved and after everything Blayne shared with Guthrie, I did not understand why he was not the one to jump into the fray to save him, instead of sending his brother-in-law.
Overall, I loves Blayne and Charlotte together, their relationship moves from an employer-employee status to a friendship as they get to know more about the other into a love beyond society’s strictures.

“Scoundrel” mixes the fake fiance plot line with bodyguard-to-lover to produce this entertaining historical romance. Although it is late in the Diamonds in the Rough series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Enough background is given on the other characters to sketch in their stories. With a little bit of mystery and a bit of steam, this was a fun read.

I received "Her Scottish Scoundrel" from NetGalley and voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. This is not the first book I have ready by Sophie Barnes and will absolutely not be the last either. I thoroughly enjoy all of her books and this one delivered a very strong and enjoyable story.

Charlotte Russell is in need of a bodyguard because of the place she sometimes likes to visit that is unsafe.
She goes to the Black Swan to hire a bodyguard and Blayne, the owner of Black Swan, decides to volunteer. Blane is hired and through the course of the book, as fake fiance's they come to know and respect each other. I think my only criticism would be that I wish the book had moved at a faster pace. Sometimes it dragged a bit, but it wasn't enough to make me no read. Very enjoyable.

Thank you to Netgalley and Sophie Barnes for giving me a chance to read an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
Her Scottish Scoundrel is the seventh book in the Diamonds in the Rough series by Sophie Barnes. This book follows Charlotte, a 27 year old writer, who has found herself in need of a bodyguard after she is robbed at knifepoint. She enlists the help of Blayne MacNeil to help her be her bodyguard. But when her parents spring an unexpected marriage prospect upon her, she enlists Blayne to play fake fiancé for her as well.
First off, I really loved this book and will be picking up the rest of the series. I already got one book that I could physically find but as soon as I can, I do want to read the rest of this series. However, this is not a series you need to necessarily read in order. I personally read this out of publication order and I was perfectly fine keeping up with what was happening in the story. However, I will be reading the whole series so I can meet the other characters introduced in this book as I absolutely adored them.
Second, I loved Charlotte and Blayne. They are both considered "older" in this time period as Charlotte is twenty seven and Blayne is in his thirties. I really loved their dynamic. Charlotte is such a firecracker of a character and someone who fights for the people she loves and the things she believes in. She is a writer in this and I absolutely adored her reasons for writing and learning more about her. Blayne is a Scottish man who is living in England, running a tavern and I loved him. It was really nice to be able to read about him and learn his backstory as well. I loved these characters so much.
I would say that I really liked the writing in this as well. It was very fast paced and something I easily fell into. It really drew me in and made me want to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. I spent several days just thinking about this book and wanting to read it when I wasn't.
The only complain I may have is that any problems were resolved pretty quickly and I figured out who it was in one of the main issues in this book. However, that could just be a me problem as I still really enjoyed this book besides all that and am so glad I was able to read it.
If you are looking for a fast paced and enjoyable, romance novel or series to pick up, I would highly recommend trying Sophie Barnes and picking up Her Scottish Scoundrel.

This book is part of the Diamonds in the Rough series, but can be read as a stand alone.
Our heroine is Charlotte. A very strong minded, intelligent, goal oriented young lady. She is 25, never married (never wants too), and an author.
On her way to see her publisher, she is attacked. So Charlotte decides to hire someone to protect.
Here is where we meet our hero, Blayne. Blayne is a bad boy from the bad side of town. Charlotte takes 1 look at him and hires him for protection.
The chemistry between is felt immediately. But Charlotte ends up taking it 1 step further and introducing Blayne as her fiancee. Her parents have been on her to marry,
So this should end that. So with her body guard/ fake fiancee the adventures begin.
I f you like a little bit of romance, intrigue and murder, this is the book for you. I'm giving it 4.5 stars, rounded up because I thought it lacked a little in the romance department.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I want to thank Netgalley for the chance to review this book.

.Conducting business in a less than safe area of London, Charlotte Russel needs a body guard. What better place to look for one than The Black Swan. Charlotte hires Blayne McNeil on the spot without realizing that he's the owner of the tavern. He takes the job, but fears to get too close with a secret that could destroy any relationship they may have. Charlotte isn't one to give up. Whether finding a thief who stole her manuscript or losing the man she loves. Always a pleasure to read a book by Sophie Barnes. Complex heroes and strong women to love them. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

A lot of things are going on in this book. There’s the fake fiancé storyline, the bodyguard to lovers story, the differences in social standing, unconventional occupations, mysteries to solve, and of course many secrets being kept. Whew, that’s a lot to keep juggling and yet Ms Barnes does a masterful job building the characters and developing each of these storylines to interweave a complex plot that kept me engaged and entertained. Charlotte and Blayne are well-developed characters that play off each other nicely. The romance is nicely paced with enough heat to be real without being overbearing. Added to the intricacies of the many plot lines, we’ve got a really good story. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher. This is my freely given, honest review.

I really liked the chatter in “Her Scottish Scoundrel” , Blayne was principled, and not really a scoundrel, and Charlotte was smart and independent. They definitely had a happily ever after, despite many setbacks and numerous people working against them. 4 stars.

I really adore this author & her stories! I absolutely love the dynamic between Charlotte and Blayne! They are perfect for one another! The story had great chemistry while being a slow burn. Which is a perfect combination in my book! But don’t let that fool you because this book has a lot going on in general! Charlotte is loyal, honest, & bold. She’s a writer and believes a husband wouldn’t let her continue that. Blayne had a past and secrets but he has dreams of working with plants. He’s also supportive. Well when Charlotte gets robbed taking her manuscript to her publisher, she decided to get a bodyguard. In comes Blayne. It was wonderful watching all this play out and the journey it takes for these two to get to their HEA! As always the side characters were wonderful as well. I can’t wait to read what’s next from Sophie!

This book took me by surprise. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the hero and heroine, and he won me over quickly. The fake fiancé trope works well here, though at times I got annoyed that the heroine did not talk to him about what she was going to say about him. It would have made things so much easier! The heroine writes novels, and it makes for an interesting subplot that I enjoyed. This is part of a larger series that I have only read one of, but I was still able to enjoy it.

I received an advanced readers copy of this book from the publisher and Net Galley in return for a fair review.

****I was provided an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.***

This story starts out with the heroine (Charlotte) needing to hire someone for protection when she goes to a shady area of St. Giles to pick up her royalties from her books she secretly has published. She goes into a tavern after her reticule is stolen and, of course, the tavern just happens to be run by a big, handsome Scotsman with secrets of his own.

From the moment Charlotte and Blayne meet, they are drawn to each other. It seems the entire universe conspires to keep them apart, but they just can’t stay away from each other.

In spite of meddlesome parents who have plans for their daughter, an unwanted suitor, secrets they are keeping from each other, and family members bent on revenge, they still manage to find their way through, as long as they have each other.

While I wouldn’t say the book is perfect, it was a solid historical romance and I look forward to reading more in this series.

Her Scottish Scoundrel is book seven of author Sophie Barnes’ Diamonds in the Rough series. While this book is a part of a series and does have some character overlap it can totally be read as a standalone, which is how I read it. From the beginning of the book I was hooked and ended up reading this book in a few hours. It was the perfect way to wrap up my weekend and now I want to go back and read other books in the series.

The MCs in the book are Scottish Blayne MacNeil and Miss Charlotte Russell a twenty-seven year old viscount’s daughter. Most of the story takes place in the setting of 1821 London during the Regency period, when with Charlottes age and unwed status most would classify her as unmarriageable. Charlotte is fine with this as she doesn’t have any desire to be tied to a man and have her freedoms stripped away. She has other plans with her life and none of them include marriage. Blayne MacNeil is a man with a past so horrendous he never plans to marrying, he doesn’t want to subject a bride to his past choices. He is happy as he is running a tavern and saving his money until he can purchase a parcel of land and live peacefully in the country. No wife needed as long as he can stay alive.

When these two meet there is instant attraction and what starts as Charlotte hiring Blayne as a bodyguard quickly turns into a fake-fiancé role when Charlotte learns her father is attempting to marry her off to an American businessman. She is not going to marry anyone without a fight.

The plot follows along the fake relationship turns real relationship trope and adds in quite a few twists and turns. The chemistry between Blayne and Charlotte just grows hotter and hotter, although there is no actual bedroom activity until late in the story.

Overall I was very happy with how the author weaved this story together. It flowed very well and I honestly wished it was a bit longer. 😉 I definitely think if you enjoy Regency Romance, strong female MC, and a male MC that would do anything for his lass. Then you will love this story!

The seventh book in the Diamonds in the Rough series another well written story in this series. Blayne MacNeil agrees to be Miss Charlotte Russell's bodyguard, but he has been in hiding for twenty years. This story has suspense, drama, danger, lies, theft, villains, twists, turns, and love. I want to read the next book. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Bodyguard and fake fiancé tropes? yes! Really enjoyed Her Scottish Scoundrel by Sophie Jordan. I loved the hero Blayne. HIs and Charlottes relationship was warm, romantic, and sexy all wrapped up into one. This is the 7th book in her Diamonds in the Rough Series. I dont think you have to read the others in the series to enjoy this one but its always great to revisit past couples. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing the ARC.

I like the romance trope of a fake-engagement because it leads to lovely, tense scenes between the hero and heroine -- as happened in this story. Blayne has secrets he needs to keep and only agrees to serve as bodyguard to Charlotte who is intense and direct and dangerously appealing to him. Charlotte is trying to avoid a forced marriage - to avoid marriage -- and her bodyguard-turned-fake-fiance is much too dangerous to all the reasons she's avoiding such an entanglement..

I really enjoyed this historical romance!

I find that the story has an interesting plot to it. The entertainment was interesting. As I was reading, I notice that the writer stuck to simple verbal words for the readers. That was great. I was happy to see the many different characters to the story. I definitely liked that the leading lady character was no simpleton. The romance of the story was unique and very sweet. I

Her Scottish Scoundrel by Sophie Barnes is the seventh book in her series called Diamonds in the Rough. This series always takes one person who has not been raised as one of the elite ton and pairs them with someone who is from the ton. Each novel can be read as a stand-alone although quite frankly they're all just quite lovely so you might want to read them all.

Miss Charlotte Russell is determined to remain a spinster. She writes best sellers under male pseudonym and believes that she can live the life she wants with her writing proceeds. Surprisingly enough, her parents have another role in mind for her. They would like to see Charlotte married to someone they're choosing, specifically one of her father's business partners.

Blayne MacNeilStart out as being Charlotte's bodyguard. However nothing stays that simple and before he knows it he is her fiance. The problem with that is that he has a past. A pass he's managed to keep hidden. By coming out with Charlotte, he has exposed himself to people who wish to see him hang for a murder that happened when he was 17.

Blayne and Charlotte fall in love, both knowing they will do anything for the other. That's when things get slightly messed up. Charlotte's new book is published by someone else. She finds out exactly what her father has done to betray her. There's nothing like a high-speed chase to Scotland to round out a book.

Her Scottish Scoundrel by Sophie Barnes is a lovely read. Be prepared for double-crossing, money hungry people, and deceptions around every turn.

This is the seventh book in Sophie Barne's Diamond in the Rough series. While I have read the other books in the series, this book would do fine as a standalone.

Charlotte is the 27 year old spinster daughter of a Viscount who secretly is also a published author under a male pseudonym. She hires Blayne as her protection and the plot takes off from there.

While this is what I would call a low steam book, with only one closed door scene, it certainly has all the feels with the angst, wanting and many plot twists and turns. The story was very well written and the plot kept my attention the entire time. I love nothing more than a protective hero who rescues the heroine, only to have her turn around and rescue him right back.

This book is also a trope heaven: Spinster, Bodyguard, Class Difference and Fake Fiance. I definitely recommend the series and was thrilled with seeing Carlton Guthrie and Regina again also.

Un unconventional lady and not your typical hero!
When Lady Charlotte, a viscount's daughter who dreams to win her independence and live freely as a lady writer comes with the idea of hiring a man to protect her when travelling to dangerous neighbourhoods nothing seems amis. Yet, little did she know that this is the first decision of many which eventually are going to change her life forever in unexpected ways. Meeting Bayne will be that faithful event that will lead her to love and blissfull marriage. They have their fair share of misshappenings due to keeping secrets from each other but eventually they get their HEA.
Ithe is a lovely story I read with little patience to turn the page and find out what happens next. I'm certainly looking forward to reading the next book in series.

I loved the book. The plot was very well written and I cannot wait for another book. This was from a new to me and great author. I really enjoyed the book. Will definitely recommend this book.

This latest book in the Diamonds in the Rough series by Sophie Barnes is a real treat and I loved every minute of it. I wasn't sure how she was going to turn rough and gruff Blaine MacNeil into a hero, but she did so perfectly. He didn't transform into a smooth-talking prince to do it either; he was just everything a real hero should be. He found a woman he respected and wanted to save.

In that regard, Charlotte was his perfect match. She wasn't too proud or stubborn to be saved. Nor was she such a delicate princess that she couldn't appreciate who he was. She was his perfect fit.

This is a real classic romance formula that is a refreshing change of pace given the tone of so many romance novels being published today. Sophie Barnes has created a strong heroine without writing a feminist manifesto and she has paired her with a traditional Alpha male hero who loves and respects her and, yet, is fully capable of making a decision without her. It was a real pleasure to read.

This is the story of Charlotte Russell, a society miss who writes scandalous novels, under a pen name, of course, and Blayne MacNeill, the owner of a tavern, and a man with a dark secret. When accosted one night on the way home from her publisher, she hires Blayne to be her bodyguard. This is where their story starts. It is an adventure with twists and turns
There is the theft of Charlotte’s latest manuscript and the danger of Blayne being recognized and tried for a twenty-year-old murder. From London to Scotland and back, they chase the truth about the murder. When they return to London, Avery, Charlotte’s publisher has a shocking bit of information. Can Charlotte and Blayne clear everything up and find their HEA? It will be a rocky road to travel, but the destination is worth it. Interesting story, great characters, great read. I enjoyed it.

Ahhhh, everything I could want and more!
This has everything a romance reader salivates over: bad guy with a heart of gold, bodyguard romance, feisty & independent heroine, danger, intrigue and fake dating.
I was never bored or disappointed with the story, romance or characters. So happy I gave this a try despite never reading the other books in the series. This read fine as a standalone so don’t like the series aspect intimidate you.

Ironically, they both want the same thing....

A quiet cottage in the country. Charlotte so she can write in peace, as she is firmly on the shelf at 27. Blayne, because he's getting older, running the Black Swan tavern isn't the same anymore, he has an interest in plants. Oh, and he's on the run for murder.
So there's that.

I was very glad that Blayne got his own story and its most welcome. He and Charlotte make an interesting couple and their road is well, not easy, but it sure was fun to read about.
Recommend.

Charlotte is a heroine we just love right away. She's holding her own in the olden days when a woman had to use a pen name to successfully publish a book. However, she's doing it and making money. She's famous. She suffers an attack and decides to protect herself from future incidents by hiring a bodyguard. That would be a hunk of a bodyguard... a Scottish one with a burr. Yum! When she burst upon the scene to hire him, he agrees without even knowing how it happened--it's totally against his will. That's when we know he's done for! He even goes to break it off right away and gets himself further entangled as her fake fiancé. Now, we just sit back and watch the romance unfold. We know it's coming, even if these 2 do not. Loved it! The right mix of mystery, crime, and romance. Still feel the warm and fuzzies! Don't miss this one!

I received an advanced copy of Her Scottish Scoundrel from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This was the first time I have read anything by this author and I have added her other books in this series to my reading list.

This is book 7 in the Diamonds in the Rough series however, I believe this book can be read as a standalone without requiring any previous knowledge of other characters.

Charlotte Russell never intends to marry, she is happy to live a life as a spinster focusing on her secret life as an author under the pen name Charles Cunningham. Visits to her publishing house in a seedier part of town lead to her being assaulted and subsequently hiring a man for protection.

Blayne MacNeill, St Giles ruffian and tavern owner is taken with Charlotte when she visits his establishment to hire a man for protection. He finds himself agreeing to take on the role however, when attending at her home the following day he is amazed to find his role is now that of fake fiancé to scupper the plans that Charlotte’s father has made to marry her to an American businessman without her knowledge. Blayne won’t let himself fall in love with Charlotte as his past is much more dark and violent than she knows and he would never allow that to ruin her.

This story had everything I was looking for. A forbidden romance, some mystery and suspense, violence, betrayal, love and loyalty. It captured my attention with the strong main characters and their interactions from the beginning. I also enjoyed the brief glimpse into the life of Guthrie and Regina who I hope feature in an earlier book in the series and Daisy and Claus.

I have rated this 4⭐️ as I would have liked a little bit more steam in the romance however this is purely a personal preference. There are stolen intimate moments which would still have been scandalous at the time of the books setting.

I’m happy that I got to read a story with an entertaining and enjoyable plot and that I now have a new author to read more of.

Amazingly complex, deeply moving love story!

What starts as a simple bodyguard-for-hire relationship quickly turns into so much more for Charlotte and Blayne. This is a surprisingly complicated story, with a fake engagement followed by a forced engagement, secret identities that completely blow up in their faces, manipulative parents, murder charges, and even a book pirating scheme. Nothing gets lost in the weeds, though. This well-crafted tale seamlessly connects all the dots while never losing focus on the tender, heartwarming story of two people falling in love.

I could feel the intense chemistry between these two right from the start, and I really appreciated how the author allowed that chemistry to build slowly between Charlotte and Blayne, saving the payoff for the very satisfying HEA. Charlotte's relationship with Mrs. Callanach was especially poignant and very sweetly resolved. This romance was a joy to read from start to finish, and I couldn't have loved it more. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Reading this book was an adventure in itself. I really enjoyed this exciting book by one of my favorite authors. Ms Barnes writes highland romance like nobody's business. This book had me at first chapter and never let go. I do love those Scots who talk the talk and walk the walk. Hmmm, delicious man who turns this reader into a lass even if I'm not. But, when Blayne MacNeil agrees to be a bodyguard for Charlotte Russell who is a Lady, he then finds himself playing the fiancee, He can't believe the gall of this opinionated woman who suddenly enters his life not knowing his circumstances. Blayne is hiding out because his life is forfeit if someone recognizes him.
Charlotte only wants to write her books to maintain her independence, that's why she told a little white lie about being engaged.
Blayne is a handsome scoundrel who finally meets his match in Charlotte. He will do anything to keep her safe, but will their love survive his being charged with murder? Please read and find out if they will get their happy ever after.
I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.

You might remember Blayne from The Forgotten Duke (my favorite book of Sophie’s) and that he has a secret. A Scottish guy, secrets, St. Giles, and an independent woman – I’m on it. Sophie knows how to keep you interested in the story and characters through her fantastic writing. Now mind you the elements of this story are well-liked by me but if they are not your forte, give this story a try. It has a lot going on between Blayne’s secret to Charlotte’s pseudonym. You heard that right, she is an acclaimed author or gothic stories. How Charlotte reacts when Blayne’s secret is out and what she does is nothing short of the power of love and what it does to you. It is also great to see Carlton and Regina again. Another amazing story from Sophie. Also, a little sneak park at Marcus’ (Regina’s brother) story.

Charlotte Russell needs someone who is burly and can protect her on expeditions into the bowels ofLondon. Blayne MacNeil needs extra funds and he fits the bill. However, things don’t quite turn out the way they think they are going to. Before you know it Blayne is a fiancé to Charlotte and Charlotte is being forced by her parents to choose another!
Both these individuals have secrets and now they are having to face these issues and neither are prepared for the sparks that are about to strike between them.

This book is definitely a great beach read and it will definitely keep you entertained and turning the pages to see what happens next. I can’t wait to read the next book about our wonderful doctor! But first read this one because he has a part to play!

I received a free advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.

Thank you to the publishers, author and Netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Sophie Barnes never ever disappoints. We have an intrepid heroine straining against the confines of society who just wants to pen her adventure novels in peace, and a hero with a dark past who just can't resist her.

I absolutely loved the chemistry between the two characters and the way that they help each other through some pretty sticky situations while maintaining faith in each other. I was gunning for these two from the beginning - they are both just so likeable!

Can't wait for the next one.
