Description

Three senior girls in rural Alaska escape their abusive pasts by raising their dyke flag for themselves and their community.

Crystal Rose woke up at three in the morning today, drenched in sweat and breathless after another sex dream with Haley Carson. Later at school in the tiny town of Clear, Alaska, Crystal saves Haley from an assault by her abusive boyfriend.

The two girls renew a love started years ago that had to stay hidden until now. But with Crystal’s grandparents in the hospital with Covid and the possibility of her drug addict parents returning from a 14-year absence, Crystal needs Haley as much as she needs Crystal.

They connect with Payton Reed, a gun-toting artist who helps them feel proud to be gay and willing to stand up to anyone. Together they struggle to make Crystal’s house safe for those who are hated for their love.

“The author has a gift of writing dialogues that are perfect and flow naturally, and it is interesting how these dialogues move the story forward while exploring and deepening characterization. The characters are well-developed, fully drawn, and sophisticated, and I enjoyed the ambiance in Crystal’s home and the boisterous nature of the characters. One of those books I raced through and would pick up again, thanks to the lively narrative voice and the character depth.”

“This story is at once an intelligent homage to gay love and a startlingly original romance with a vividly described setting in the small town of Clear, Alaska. The author is never lacking in wit and she created characters that I still followed after turning the last page. Crystal's House of Queers has huge doses of humor, features dialogues that feel real, and plot points that are solidly imagined and executed with skill.”

“Brooke Skipstone’s work is perfect from every angle, plausible and irresistible, and Brooke comes across as one of the coolest writers I have read. The characters are well-written and I just adored the kickass Payton Reed. In this story, some girls decide to choose whom to love and how to love and no one will stand in their way. Brooke Skipstone’s storytelling skills shine brightly through this novel, a book I will gladly pick up to read again.”
