Description

"The best friends to enemies-to-lovers story I needed in my life! The Charmed List utterly enchants with its delightful characters and heartfelt themes of family, friendship, and first love. Sometimes you need a little magic to fall in love
.

Ellie Kobata has spent most of high school on the sidelines, keeping her art Instagram private and shying away from the world. She can’t even tell her only friend, Lia, who she really is: Ellie is part of a secret magical community, and no one outside of it can know it exists. The only person Ellie could fully relate to was Jack Yasuda – her childhood friend who mysteriously started to snub her a few years ago.

But before senior year, Ellie is ready to take some risks and have a life-changing summer, starting with her Anti-Wallflower List – thirteen items she’s going to check off one by one. With this list, she hopes to finally come out of her shell; even though she can’t share her full self with the world. But when number four on Ellie’s list goes horribly wrong—revenge on Jack Yasuda—she’s certain her summer is cursed. Instead of spending her summer with Lia, Ellie finds herself stuck in a car with Jack driving to a magical convention. But as Ellie and Jack travel down the coast of California, number thirteen on her list—fall in love—may be happening without her realizing it.

In The Charmed List, Julie Abe sweeps readers away to a secret magical world, complete with cupcakes and tea with added sparks of joy, and an enchanted cottage where you can dance under the stars.

Quick Summary: The Charmed List was magically sweet and a pure breath of fresh air.

Julie Abe is a YA romance master, I am convinced. With this story, she was able to charm the socks off this reader. What she got right: the magic, the mayhem, the angst, and the reconciliation.

The Magic -- Not only did Abe paint a beautiful picture of a magical world that exists just beyond the awareness of those who are not magically inclined, but she also crafted a story that weaved in charms, potions, and everyday spells meant to conjure up healing, positivity, wellness, and wholeness. Additionally, I found magic in her characters. I absolutely loved her charmed protagonists and the supporting cast.

The Mayhem - The chaos that comes from a friends to enemy to lovers story will always be a draw. This story showcased that pattern brilliantly. The emotional angle that led to the relationship disconnect was heartbreaking. I didn't understand the why of it all until I did, and by that time, I was fully invested and hopeful for this couple to work towards figuring things out.

The Angst - Ellie and Jack were both written so well. The Wallflower and the Former BFF (who just happened to be a hunk) were such likable characters. They were textured, layered with relatable complexities. Their existing conflict greatly hindered their forward progression both as friends and as individuals. Because of that, it was perfect setup for their inevitable encounter.

The Reconciliation - The reconciliation was multi-layered, and I was totally here for it. I was concerned for a bit, but thankfully I got my HEA on all fronts, as Abe did well tying up every loose end.

Okay this is everything I wanted this to be and more. The magic system in this book was honestly the most practical and enjoyable I have seen and I wish I lived in this world! The romance between the characters was amazing and I just loved the enemies to lovers bickering banter they had (heart eyes). This just checked all the boxes for me and I wish there was more because I am not ready to say goodbye to this story, these characters, and this world.

This was an adorable read. Perfect for a summer beach read. I enjoyed reading about Ellie and Jacks relationship journey. Especially it being a friends to enemies to lovers trope. It was so much fun navigating the growth of that relationship. The magic system in the book was very well done. Something I'm happy about. I was initially a little worried about it being overdone. This was a sweet little book and I'm happy I got the chance to read it. Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this little gem.
