It was a life beyond anything Nathan had ever imagined. Malina, who knew not the meaning of moderation in love or hate, completed this perfect life.
Yet discord simmered just underneath the surface. Brigands infested the roads. Greeks milled gunpowder for revolution. Muslims and Christians damned each other to their respective hells. All detested the arrogant janissaries. With a Greek mother and a powerful janissary father, Ahmet was torn by these controversies.
As the Greek-Ottoman world splintered into warring factions, Nathan, Malina, and Ahmet must decide whether love, devotion, and friendship were a means to survival or a barrier to survival.
Therein hangs this tale.

A strong fourth book in the SONS OF THE NEW WORLD series, it had what I was looking for in this type of book. It had what I was looking for in this type of book and the characters were what I needed from this series. James Short has a great writing style and I enjoyed this overall.
"Despite the disdain stamped on his face, many young men, exhibiting strained smiles and mouthing flattery, surrounded Ahmet as if pulled into his orbit against their wills. Nathan also felt the magnetism of this disagreeable man who did not like him, and he made the determination to keep aloof. He avoided speaking to show he was above the flattery, bowing, and scraping, yet failed to muster a sense of superiority. He did not find it surprising that the son of Vidal Aga had decided to detest him."
