The Inheritance Games and One of Us is Lying for middle grade -- beloved author Alyson Gerber's new series is an unforgettable mystery featuring a secret society, a mysterious island, and dangerous family secrets.

Weatherby is a fish out of water. When she lands a scholarship to the prestigious Boston School, she’s excited to be in the same world as her dad, whom she’s never met, and make real friends. But Weatherby has a secret she’ll risk everything to protect, one that could destroy her new life.

Every member of Jack’s wealthy and privileged family has made their mark at the Boston School. Everyone, that is, except for Jack, who is entirely mediocre. He’s desperate to prove his worth to his influential father. But Jack has a secret of his own . . . one with the power to ruin everything.

When the money for their school trip to a private island—exclusive to Boston students—is stolen, Jack and Weatherby are invited to play a high-stakes game and solve the mystery of the missing money. If they win, they’ll be selected to join the oldest, most powerful secret society in the world—and they’ll be Boston royalty forever. If they lose . . . well, they better not lose.

Beloved author Alyson Gerber crafts an unforgettable mystery that asks—are some secrets and lies impossible to overcome?

I had the honor of reading an ARC of this story via NetGalley. Weatherby is a teen girl who gets the chance of a lifetime to attend the same prestigious school as her mysterious deceased father. Jack is a teen boy who is struggling with feelings of inadequacies and not belonging in his high profile family. The duo become unlikely allies as they both are tapped to join The Last Heir, a secret society for the elite, and seek to uncover the truth surrounding some weird happenings in their upper-crust society while desperate to keep their own skeletons hidden.

The Liars Society is a great adventure filled story for middle level readers who want to read the books of Lockhart or McManus, but might not be quite ready for some of those older themes. I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait for more of Weatherby and Jack’s story.

A suspenseful, plot-twist-filled novel with an full and fun cast of characters. 10-11 year old readers will love this well-paced mystery with a classic feel and modern, environmentally-conscience twist.

I absolutely loved this book. It is great middle grade representation with a complex storyline that kids deserve! The idea of Knives Out for the whole family, or Middle Grade Inheritance Games is spot on, and I cannot wait to purchase this for my school. I also can’t wait for book 2!!

This is the first Alyson Gerber novel for me, but it dang sure will NOT be my last! The story centers around Weatherby and Jack who meet when Weatherby attends a private school where Jack is on the sailing team. The characters are strong. The story is engaging and you definitely will look forward to the next book. The mystery is just right for middle school readers. Thanks #netgalley, #AlysonGerber and #ScholasticPress for the eARC in exchange for a honest review. All opinions are mine.

As a fan of Alyson Gerber's contemporary middle grade, I was super excited to see she was releasing her first thriller—and the beginning of a series!—comparable to One of Us is Lying. Even if I hadn't read her previous books, this one would've definitely made me a fan! I couldn't put The Liar's Society down, wanting to know who stole the money for Weatherby and Jack's private school's field trip and if the school's secret society, Last Heir, was involved. For sure, the story leaves you with many questions that will have you yearning for the sequel.

I love when a read a book and I know exactly which group of students whose radar I need to put it on! Our 4th and 5th graders cannot get enough of the mysterious and of stories where secrets and lies play a factor in the plot! The Liars Society has strong characters with intriguing histories to try to figure out! The setting of a Boston prep school and the idea of a secret society will definitely appeal to readers. This is especially true because a lot of times, stories that involve these types of things are not written for middle grade. This one fills that hole and is absolutely perfect for middle grade! There is so much that would make great discussion for a whole class or for a small group read as well.

Not only did I find myself turning the pages all morning long, when I reached the end, I was thrilled to find out there will be more! The world, the circumstances, and the characters have been established in such a way that I cannot wait to see where they go next.
