This is an informative, easy to read, short (under 200 pages) biography of Lucille Ball. The story beings with her birth and family in Jamestown, NY. Because Lucy was always famous during my lifetime but it took 20 years of hard work before she became a household name. I’ve read other biographies and watched salutes to this star so not much is new here. The books is laid out well and the highlight to me are the photos. This isn’t a tell all and although Desi’s cheating is mentioned and the red scare there is nothing scandalous. What stood out to me is that Lucy was a loyal friend and co-star and wonderful at creating lifelong friendships starting with her early days in Hollywood. For fans are those who want to know a bit more about this comedic legend.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Chartwell Books for the temporary ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review. This appears to be a re-release of a book previously published in 2011.
I don’t read many memoirs, but I would like to. This one with Lucille Ball does a great job at retelling her start at Hollywood and beyond. It does not go into great detail into everything but it’s a great overview of what an amazing career she had. From radio, stage, film and tv Lucille Ball was a strong woman with a great story.
A beautiful coffee style book written about my all time factor actress who really shaped comedy, slapstick and television as we see it today. I have been a lifelong fan and visit her hometown of Jamestown several times a year to go to the Lucy museum and the comedy museum.
Over the years I have read many books on her and this book covers some of the same information, but is much more extensive with new material that I didn't know. There are other books that go into more detail describing each movie and each tv show that she was in. The pictures are fantastic and the book was written extremally well. This is the type of book that I look for when I explore a subject that I am familiar with but want more information.
I love Lucy and I love this book and highly recommend it.
My love for Lucille Ball began as a child. I Love Lucy was my favorite show and it is still one of my favorite comfort shows to re-watch again and again. This collection was excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed looking through the images and reading it. I will be purchasing a copy for my collection.
"Lucille Ball Treasures" is an absolute gem for fans of the iconic comedian and actress. This book takes readers on a captivating journey through Lucille Ball's early life, struggles, and tenacity, painting a vivid portrait of the woman behind the legend. The carefully curated collection of photographs spanning her entire life adds an extra layer of depth to this easy-reading biography, allowing us to witness her remarkable journey firsthand. Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary copy of this lovely book.
If you only know Lucille Ball through her zany "I Love Lucy" show, you've missed quite a bit. It's easy to just assume that big star that she was as Lucy, she was always a sparkling, funny star. Not so. Like others who have attained that realm of stardom and influence, she worked hard for years to get there.
This book takes the time to share those early days, days when she wasn't even listed in the credits of some films. It was actually rather fascinating to get a glimpse of the unknown Lucille, just another aspiring small-town girl wanting to be an actress. She put in the hours and hard work needed to ultimately be not just a success but a "mover-and-shaker" in the film industry. For that, I'm grateful, as are Star Trek fans.
The photos shared are a delight in themselves. Yes, I went though the book first simply to take in the pictures which, in themselves, rather chronicle her early days and rise. Although I've certainly read other books on her, there were many that I'd never seen. While the book doesn't go into great detail about these early day works, they do share enough to give us a feel for why they were important steps in her career and personal path. I'm not sure one can put into words whatever it is that separates a Lucille Ball from the assorted other starlets who came up with her but whatever it was, it worked. It was interesting to note how many of the performers she worked with in the early days were showcased on "I Love Lucy", I might note. There are several but the one that immediately popped into my head was the silent routine she did with Harpo Marx, each managing to perfectly mimic the other's movements. A classic. Perfection and nostalgia rolled into one.
There's much more but I'll simply add that whether you're intrigued by Ball herself or the show biz angle, there is a great deal to enjoy in this book. It would make a lovely gift. Thanks #NetGalley and #QuartoPublishingGroup - #ChartwellBooks for this early peek at the book.
I enjoyed this book very much. Many lovely pictures of Lucille Ball and highlights her life from birth to death.
I learned many things about her that I did not know and enjoyed reading about this great lady of comedy.
This book is a great overview of the life of Lucille Ball. I enjoyed the flow of the story and all the pictures included. I learned so much about her and how she changed the entertainment industry. She was so much more than one show. It was a quick but informative read that I recommend others check out.
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the arc.
Full of wonderful photos and engaging texts, this book celebrates Lucy's life and the rich legacy of her work.
I really only know Lucille Ball from The I Love Lucy Show. This beautiful book covers her life from beginning to end, and she was so much more than that.. The book at approx 200 pages is the perfect length and is filled with gorgeous photos of Ms Ball through the years
Wow! This gorgeous, informative book about Lucille Ball is perfect for any Lucy fan. I love the included quotes, layout, stunning images, details about Lucy’s life, and the overall vibrancy of this book. It’s wonderful!
This has to be one of the best Lucille Ball books I have ever read! All the pictures and I learned more about her than I ever knew.
If you are a fan or know someone who is I highly recommend this book.
I received a copy from Netgalley for my honest review
I recently learned that Lucille was a distant cousin of mine, a few times removed. I realized that I wanted to learn more about her, besides the show I loved to watch reruns in the early mornings before school in the mid-2000s.
This book covers the major points of her life, from birth to death. It includes gorgeous photos of her throughout it all. Her personality is portrayed so thoughtfully. This was such am endearing read, and I highly recommend it.
Rest in Peace Lucille ❤️
This was a beautiful book detailing facts about my favorite redhead. Even though I’ve read many biographies about Lucille Ball, it’s always fun to pick up a few new details and the pictures are wonderful! A great addition to any Lucy fan’s collection. If you get the ebook version, be sure to read it on a large screen to get the maximum benefit. Thank you to NetGalley and Becker and Mayer for the opportunity to read this advanced copy..
"I'm a big Lucille Ball fan who's used to being disappointed. The three aspects that the media often focuses on tend to be the least interesting about the Hollywood icon: her marriage to Desi Arnaz, "I Love Lucy," and being an older actress in the industry. "Lucille Ball Treasures" avoids the pitfalls in past Ball bios by centering on Lucille Ball, the tenacious talent, not just the star of the namesake sitcom.
I knew her beginnings were humble, but I didn't realize she was her family's breadwinner. It was inspiring to learn that, even while taking in the industry and failing to capitalize off a "big break," she was successful enough to provide for herself and her family. As an actor gearing up to get back into "the business," I loved reading about Ball's climb up the A-list ladder. There's a lot of valuable information covered about Hollywood standards and politics.
By the time "I Love Lucy" hit the silver screen, Lucille Ball was already forty years old and had been performing for more than two decades!
The book is filled with breathtaking photos, many of which I'd never seen before. Paired with the timeline of the biography, it sometimes felt as though the words and images aligned to tell a deeper, more textured story. "Lucille Ball Treasures" illuminates the impact that Lucille Ball left on the industry, as well as the ways that she and Desi Arnaz innovated thirty-minute situation comedy.
This book doesn't come out until 10/21/2023, but I've already pre-ordered my copy. It's a great coffee table book, and you don't have to be a diehard fan to appreciate the writing and photographs.
Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC"
