This was such cute story on life and adventure. My 8 year old and I sat and read this together and highly enjoyed it.
What an adorable story. I can already tell this will be a new favorite with my kiddos. Such wonderful descriptions and the illustrations are absolutely stunning.
As a massive Maren Morris fan, I couldn't wait to read this book. I love the way she writes song lyrics so I was intersted to see how that translated to the whimsy and joy of a children's book. Addie Ant is a fun, beautiful book with a story that encourages adventure and learning about the world around us. Plus the illustrations are wonderful! Addie's journey through the farm is adorable and I cannot wait to share it with the little ones in my life.
Thank you to Chronicle Books, Chronicle Chroma, and NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book to read and review. I didn't realize this was a picture book from singer/songwriter Maren Morris, but was delighted to discover that as she's definitely got a way with words and is a great performer. That said, I think the words of this book are what tripped me up a bit. I do love the ant/bug puns (like the family of aUnts) but ultimately I thought the text had a lot of unnecessarily large/distracting words for the age group and reading level - like soup described as bisque and an action described as "Beatrix confidently straightened her antennae." Not that kids can't understand those things or that they aren't accurate, but definitely felt like they cluttered up an adventure story by being overly complex to physically read. The illustrations are superb, and I the visuals of the book stand out as special to me when the story doesn't.
First off the art was the best. I love any art where the animals act like like humans. My daughter loved it.
This book was absolutely gorgeous! My 3 and 5 year old sat with me and listened to the story. The 3 year old loved all of the pictures and the story kept my 5 year old captivated the entire time. I loved the puns! We will have to get a physical copy of the book for our bookshelf. I love adding books like this to our collection that tell stories about brave adventures! I think it would be well suited for kids 6-10 year olds.
This book was pretty cute. The art was very cozy and adorable. The story is what lost it for me. The plot was not super exciting, but told in many words. I can only imagine my Kinders and 1st graders liking the story, but they could not sit through this many words. Maybe it would work in a different school, but it was not for me.
Loved this fun book. It was a big hit with my son, so many cute little saying and puns. Such a fun book with a great message about taking chances and stepping out of your comfort zone.
This was a BEAUTIFULLY illustrated book, the art was simply stunning. The font was a bit small and hard to read, I presume it may be tough for little eyes. I loved the storyline, there was a bit about being brave and not being afraid to ask for help - I wish this theme continued through a bit more, this could have been more of a teaching moment or emotionally engaging. I loved the tidbit about ants on the last page, I wish more of that was sprinkled throughout the book. There were lots of cute touches added in, like the better hills and gardens magazine. Overall the art was the star of this show.
This was a really cute book with unique, colorful, and fun illustrations. I liked how the map was like a Clue board and the fun ant facts at the end of the book.
The illustrations in Addie Ant Goes on an Adventure are absolutely exquisite. I would buy and gift this book for the pictures alone. The added bonus is that the story is really cute too.

As a huge fan of Maren Morris, I was so excited to read her debut children’s book to my toddler. This sweet book is a celebration of friendship and teaches little readers that it’s okay to ask for help. Illustrator Kelly Anne Dalton brings the charming and delightful characters to life with fun and colorful pictures sure to please readers both young and young at heart. I was truly blown away by Dalton’s beautiful illustrations and would buy this book for the pictures alone. This was such a fun story, and I hope we will see Addie and her insect friends again!
Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Very pretty illustrations! Cute story. I would’ve adored this book when I was a kid! Very short story and very cute. Perfect for bedtime.
This is a sweet bedtime story with a couple of fun facts about ants at the end. I liked the alliterative names of the insects. The illustrations are cute and include fun little details like one of the aunts reading “Better Hills & Gardens,” which made me laugh when I spotted it.
Thanks to NetGalley for this advanced copy.
How sweet was that! Addie tries something new, despite her very valid anxieties. It was nice to see the characters support Addie while gently pushing her out of her comfort zone. It doesn't hurt that this book is beautifully illustrated, either. I love Addie Ant and hope I can read more adventures about her in the future.
This hardcover book has the best illustrations. You will have so much fun going on the adventure with the Ant. I would recommend this for a read aloud in a classroom or just to have for a home library.
This is an absolutely adorable picture book debut by singer Maren Morris and former teacher Karina Argow! The beautiful artwork by Kelly Anne Dalton is whimsical, sweet, and the perfect accompaniment to a precious story about a young ant learning to explore the world around her.
I will definitely be purchasing this title for our library's picture book collection. Thank you to Chronicle Books, Chronicle Chroma, and NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book to read and review.
This is so cute and adorable! The drawings are super sweet, and the story is lovely!
The only thing I’d prefer to change if it was an option would be the font size. I can absolutely imagine an older child who already knows how to tell letters apart would love to follow the story as it is read together with an adult, and young children are usually reluctant to focus on text that consists of tiny letters. Also, I’m not too sure regarding the big and complex words that are sometimes used here, I feel like it would either distract the child from the book (as the words have to be explained) or just make the child disinterested at all, as it is not something that they understand, hence it’s not that interesting.
And, on a side note, it is sad to see a picture book misleadingly labeled as a graphic novel. No, this is not a graphic novel. This is a picture book.
I loved this sweet little adventure. If you're seeking whimsy and themes of persistence and friendship, look no further. Addie takes the reader on a seemingly small, but somehow also grand, journey, meeting up with familiar friends and navigating her way through the garden. Very fun and great for a wide range of children. The illustrations are inviting and intricate, allowing older readers to find themselves equally absorbed in the oversized garden setting as well.
This is a cute book about a little ant taking an adventure across the garden where she's never been before. It's a fairly easy and quick read great for young kids.
I absolutely loved reading this book with my 2nd grade daughter! From the adorably draw aunt, to the detailed and multi-layered garden pictures, and most especially the validation of emotions and doing hard things, this book was fabulous! Additionally, while my daughter is not yet at the reading level to be able to read Addie the Ant by herself, it was easy for her to follow along, and I would say about 50% of the words were sight words so she either knew or could easily guess them.
We're very much hoping for more Addie the Ant books!
simply adorable! I love the imagery of the garden, the animals interacting and getting along, and especially the eccentric ladybug!
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A sweet picture book about Addie the Ant, who strikes out on her own. She goes from place to place, trying to find her way. Sometimes she gets lost, but she always learns a lesson. Cute illustrations but a lot of small text.
This is an adorable kid's book that teaches kids not to be afraid of adventure and new things. It reminds us that asking for help isn't just a good thing, but also necessary sometimes. It perfectly explains to kids that there are things to be enjoyed everywhere if you are willing to step outside of your comfort zone to experience something new.
This was the cutest adventure through the garden! Incredibly well-written with smart wordplay and beautiful illustrations. The characters were all so fun. I’d love to follow Addie on more adventures!
Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Get ready to go on a magical adventure with Addie Ant as she seeks her independence but realizes that assistance is always there for the asking.
Friendship is valued as so integral to Addie's journey as we are introduced to buddies such as Lewis Ladybug and Cleo Cricket. They are friends to be cherished and trusted, two qualities that are always required in companionship.
Maren Morris's authorship is so apparent as I read the melodious text. The illustrations are beautifully drawn and are vivid and striking. This book is a lovely addition to young children's literature.
This is a charming story with luscious illustrations. Addie is going on her first solo adventure and encounters a few worrying circumstances. She is helped to face these worries by other insects she is familiar with.
A wonderful standalone story that can also be used as a learning tool in a number of ways. There are a few spots where the story gets choppy and there are occasional over done descriptions but they are most likely not to be noticed by an interested reader.
What an absolutely STUNNING book. Some of the most gorgeous illustrations I've ever seen, and the colors are lovely. The story is well-written, with flowery prose that is fun and whimsical, and I love the adventure the little ant goes on. So sweet!
Oh my GOODNESS ! This book was soooo cute and the pictures not only enhanced the story but it enriched it too ! Don’t get me started on the ANT 🐜 jokes that made it in as well ! I was giggling so hard ! This book is destined to be a SMASHING HIT with the kiddos once it publishes !
This was a book with amazing illustrations. The illustrations give so much to the story and a better understanding of the environment and where everyone is. The story is about Addie going on an adventure through the garden area where she lives and coming across different insects. The insects help guide her along the way because she does not know where she is going. When she encounters each of the insects it seems like their only purpose is to be vividly described with big words that students of this age group would not know, give a quick direction, and then throw an unneeded fear towards Addie for her to encounter and overcome. The story seemed rushed and with unneeded "drama" thrown in. Addie leaves with no fears ready for an adventure and while on the adventure the "adult" insects in the story warn her of dangers to beware of, but do not help her or join her to keep her safe. Overall it is a story about overcoming fears and being brave but other stories portray the message more clearly than this one.
Thank you NetGalley and Chronicle Books for an advanced e-reader copy of this book.
This book has bright, beautiful artwork. My 7 year old daughter loved looking at the pictures. I think the story was okay but she enjoyed the artwork the most. I think that the way it was written would actually appeal to adults more because it uses phrases and sayings that kids are mostly unfamiliar with.
This was a cute book, beautiful illustrations and a good catchy title. I like how the aunt’s gave Addie some freedom to explore for herself. Becoming independent is important and it is hard if adults are not willing for you to do it by yourself. They trusted Addie. Trust goes a long way. I also liked the ant facts at the end of the book. I learned something. It was enough information to not get overwhelmed, but to make a reader want to help the earth and maybe look into more information.
Addie Ant Goes on an Adventure, the charming picture-book debut by acclaimed singer-songwriter Maren Morris and former schoolteacher Karina Argow, takes readers on a delightful journey through a vast garden inhabited by helpful insect friends. As Addie Ant embarks on her first solo adventure, the story beautifully unfolds, highlighting themes of independence, friendship, and the importance of knowing when to ask for help. The collaboration between Morris and Argow, complemented by the colorful illustrations by artist Kelly Anne Dalton, brings the characters to life in a vivid and heartwarming way. This sweet book is not only a celebration of friendship but also an exploration of the magic found in nature's abundance. Join Addie Ant and her insect pals in this enchanting garden adventure filled with growing vegetables, blooming flowers, and the joy of shared experiences.
Well, this was just a wonderful little story. Addie is headed out to an area of her world where she hasn't been. Along the way, she meets a variety of creatures who are happy to help. It's this help that teaches Addie to not be so scared and learn from others. The illustrations of this one add so much to the story. I loved how they made the story come to life and show what life looks like for insects. Thanks to NetGalley for the look at this April 2024 release.
Addie Ant wants to travel alone between two garden beds. But along the way, she needs help. She asks her friends to assist her, and they're kind and thoughtful.
I like the message of how it's okay to ask for help. And all the insects treat Addie with kindness. I appreciate that I could read this story to children of all ages without worrying that it might be scary or frustrating.
There isn't a lot of education about insects, but that's okay.
The colorful illustrations are beautiful and sweet! Readers can see vegetables, flowers and dozens of items found in nature.
Addie the ant is off on an adventure through the garden. She meets great friends along the way and faces her fears of trying something new. The illustrations in this book were great and added to the story on each page. I love the message of not being afraid to ask for help when you have questions, this is a great message for all to remember. The story ended with bonus facts about ants.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this book in exchange for my review! All opinions are my own.
I had no clue Maren Morris wrote a book for children. She should definitely write more in the future. She is an entertaining author (probably because she also writes such great songs!). This book reminded me of the "Miss Spider" series that was popular when I was a kid, and it also reminded me slightly of Eric Carle's books for children about insects too. I loved the illustrations, they were very eye-catching. I think this book could definitely hold children's attention. I like that it will also be a way to educate children about insects and nature. This is very important to teach children about from a very young age. I would buy this book if my friends or a family member were to have a baby. It was sweet and darling. I really enjoyed it, even though I am not the target audience!

In Addie Ant Goes on an Adventure, Maren Morris has written her first children’s book. Addie Ant lived in the bottom of a tomato bed with her aunt Gertie and aunt Zelda. But she longed to travel across the garden and visit the area behind the shed. It is filled with watermelons and sunflowers. She meets some fun characters such as Lewis Ladybug. She was warned about the gardener’s hen, Harriet Chicken. He would often mistake critters as corn. She makes her way to the watermelons and sunflowers and is taken back from the beautiful scenery and adventure.
I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who has children aged 1-7. I loved how this book educated kids on the importance of ants and how they help plants and the ecosystem in the garden or the rainforest. This book is a fun little adventure book about nature and how ants probably have a quest daily in the environment. This book is a little different from what I thought Maren Morris would have written. I’m guessing she wrote it for son. It didn’t have a lot of music or lyric references like I thought at first it would have coming from a hit songwriter. It was still a fun adventure for children to partake on. The illustration was breathtaking and children will enjoy watching the adventure unfold.
"I received this book free from Chronicle Books for my honest review.”
This book was super cute and had amazing illustrations that perfectly encased what the world of an ant would look like. The writing included very descriptive details of the setting and plot. The dialogue between some of the characters felt off but overall this is a great book to read with your children
I loved the adorable colors and details of this book. The descriptions were rich and fun! A bit uneven pacing on the pages. A few lines could have been shortened to keep it moving a bit more. I also would be mindful of the font, I sometimes lost the words! A little bigger, or sometimes white instead of black would be helpful. Cute story, very sweet garden details!
An adorable and beautifully illustrated book about Addie, the adventurous ant and her travels through the garden bed
Addie Ant longs to see the outside world and finally goes on that adventure. Leaving home exposes Addie Ant to the many obstacles and other animals to meet and learn from. This is an adorable picture book with detailed illustrations. This is an easy read and allows for the conversation of leaving home and exploring the world.
The perfect book to explore the smallest, tiny things in our lives and surroundings. It's a great starter for educators to let their students pay more attention to their ecosystem in a small garden or patch of dirt. There is so much happening and so much to learn from. Addie's journey is amazing, she encounters so much not only good food, but other species, flowers, aromas, flavors, and scents. The illustrations are very detailed and beautifully stylized. We could spend time looking at the details and the harmony of colors. Has a great mood and message. I love books about ants. I wish the font was a bit larger.
Thank you, publisher and Netgalley for this e-arc.
My thanks for the ARC goes to NetGalley and Chronicle Chroma. I'm voluntarily leaving a review.
Genre and Age: Picture book for young kids
Representation: Lewis Ladybug uses they/their pronouns
The artwork in this book is adorable!
I felt like this book was a little wordy and the story meandered. There are things kids will enjoy like her compass and other bug-sized props.
What was Addie's motivation for going on an adventure? I'm not sure what she wanted other than seeing more of the world. Is that a lot to ask for from a picture book? Maybe, but I still wanted more.
And Addie doesn't solve her own problem about how to get home. I wanted to see what she'd learned on her adventure and how that might have helped her with her goal to return.
So even though this wasn't my favorite picture book, if you want a bug-sized adventure, this book might be perfect for you and your family.
Happy reading!
Addie the ant wants to go exploring out of the tomato bed where she lives with her aunts. This adorably illustrated book follows her around the neighborhood and introduces some of the other insects in the neighborhood. There aren't any real morals or underlying lessons in this story. It really is just purely for entertainment. There is a small fact section about ants at the very end. I received an advance reading copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily,
I had high hopes for this book. Being a Pre
-K teacher, one of my absolute favorite things to do is to read stories to my students. I love reading and thoroughly enjoy helping to foster their love of reading. The title of this book and the adorable pictures throughout had me excited to read it. However, I didn’t feel that there was a great flow to the story. I actually read it out loud to see how it would sound if I read it to my students, and it just didn’t work. There really wasn’t a rhythm to the story (which was especially surprising to me, seeing as an which was especially surprising to me seeing as a singer–songwriter was one of the co-authors) and there were too many words that would be unfamiliar to the students. I don’t mind books that throw in words like that here and there especially if they make sense with the context so the students can figure out what they mean. In this case, there was an overabundance of that and not always a great context to figure out the word. Unfortunately, I don’t think I would purchase this for my class..
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is an adorable children's book. The pictures are really cute and so is the story!
I read this book with my 8-year-old daughter. She liked all the details and all the adventures Addie the ant went on. Cleo the Cricket was my daughter's favorite part of the story. I liked Addie's willingness to face the unknown. I feel that this teaches young readers to overcome fears and face the unknown. The illustrations were very imaginative and magical. Overall, we loved this book.
The illustrations are adorable, with so many details. However, I don't feel like the story itself comes up to the level of the illustrations. It could use some improvement.
I loved the pictures in this book, they were beautiful and engaging. However, I found the actual text to be too wordy and overly descriptive. I had a hard time reading this to my son because the actual words didn’t flow well. I think with some more editing this could be a great story!
I loved this book! The story of Addie Ant going on an adventure to explore the garden, along with the beautiful illustrations, was so inviting and would be a wonderful addition to any children's library, or gift for a grandchild..
This book has stunning illustrations! The story is cute, with some insightful messages throughout. I did think that the vocabulary was a little advanced at times for a children’s book. I’m not sure I’d see the 4 year olds I know being super enthralled and comprehensive of it, but they’d love the illustrations!
As we learn at the end, ants are actually social creatures and do interact with other animals and with their environment. Addie the Ant interacts by going out and having an adventure! The illustrations are bright and beautiful, and the story is sweet. In the end, Addie is at home at the end of the day tucked safely into bed.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
I just finished this children's picture book Addie Ant Goes on an Adventure. I love the illustrations!! They enhance the sweet story. Addie is an adorable ant and her adventure is picture perfect. Thank you #netgalley for the advanced copy of #addieantgoesonanadventure
This will be a smash hit for children of all ages.
My lovely nanny kid and I found ourselves fully immersed in Addie Ant’s adventure! We often refer to our own outings as adventures so it fit right in to our lifestyle. All the characters prompted my little into asking questions about the various insects. The drawings were phenomenal with setting the scene!
A cute little book with beautiful illustrations
Addie Ant lives in the tomato bed with her aunts and she has always dreamed of traveling to the far side of the garden where the watermelons grew. One fine day, she takes a leap and starts her travel. The story tells us about her travel and what happened on the way.
My Thoughts
This is a fun little book which emphasizes that you can always rely on your friends for help. The illustrations are the one which is really top notch. Addie's eye lashes are so fab. The garden and the other supporting insects are so beautiful.
The only downside to this book is the use of really big words which I am not sure if kids aged 4- 6 would be able to grasp. I wish the author would have used simpler words or provided meanings as a subtext so it would help develop the young readers vocabulary
All in all, a good read
My rating : 4.25 rounded to 4
I received an electronic ARC from Chronicle Books through NetGalley.
The artwork is charming with an old fashioned design. The story is simple - Addie decides to go visit a different part of the garden and see friends. This is not an easy feat for an ant. She sets out and learns that it is okay to ask for help along the way and to get home again. I appreciate the interactions and the light tone. However, the story does not flow smoothly especially when read aloud.
This was so cute! You’re following Addie Ant on her first solo adventure! She’s very comfortable in her tomato bed community but has decided to wander over to the watermelon and sunflower bed across the garden!
She meets many equally as adorable insects on her mission and eats adorably illustrated fruits and vegetables!
I LOVED it! The art and the personification of the insects really make it!
PSuch a lovely book!! Kids will love the beautiful pictures and all the bugs!! The story is very cute!
Addie the ant takes you on a little adventure meeting friends of all insects along the way to the other side of the garden. This book is wonderfully written and stands out to children who love ants. My little one kept shouting "I love it! I love it!" I could tell a lot of work went into the detailed drawings of each page down to the tiniest insect.
If you’re doing a unit on ants, this would be a fun addition to your program. It’s the story of an ant that goes on a little adventure. It’s geared toward younger children as older kids may feel it’s a bit anticlimactic. It’s full of ant puns and cute, “antastic” turn of phrase. The illustrations are cute and textured.
It’s a very pretty book.
Thank you for the eARC!
The pictures in the story are really creative, and I love the concept of traveling across such a small space, but so large for the ant. As we follow the ant across the garden, she encounters many common bugs and plants. I love that the authors don’t shy away from advanced vocabulary. However, this is definitely more of an “adult reads to the child” book. At times, it skips around a little and jumps in the story, making me go back to see if I missed a page. I like the message - to try something new and make your own adventure.
Addie Ant Goes on an Adventure is a sweet picture book for kids of all ages! As the title suggests, the plot revolves around a young ant who goes on an adventure, traveling from the garden bed where she lives across the farm to the watermelon patch. The illustrations are lush and lovely, and the text includes lots of puns and descriptive language.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This book was adorable! The illustrations are so wonderful and the story is so great. This will be a joy to read with children. I really enjoyed this story.
This book was wonderful! It has beautiful illustrations and the story is really cute. Any huge Maren Morris fan with young children will be thrilled by this story, and it very much fit with what I'd hoped a children's book from her would look like. I'd highly recommend!
This was so cute! It was an excellent story with excellent illustrations. I loved the different little places in the garden that Addie could visit. I loved the adventure and characters. Highly recommend.
