As a fan of historical fiction, I was delighted with the story line, writing style and development of this story set in Missouri of young love and learning to wait. Beth B. Taylor tells the story of Leann Clark and Ralph Wade and their desire to be wed and start their life together. Their hopes and dreams are postponed when Leann's father strongly objects since he feels Ralph does not possess the financial or emotional maturity needed to care for his daughter. This novella follows the couple through the many obstacles they face in their relationship while trying to gain the confidence of their families and the financial strength to survive in these trying times following the Civil War. Page after page, I kept rooting for this couple, hoping, praying they would be able to be together in the end. I loved how the characters were imperfect people, just trying to cope with life after a terrible war. Ms. Taylor wasn't afraid to delve into social issues relevent to that particular time, and now.
