Description

"Glamorous queer aesthetics, fairy tale optimism, and earthy sincerity uplift this breezy tale" —Publishers Weekly

A modern coming-of-age fashion fairy tale about pursuing your passion.

Blanca is running away. Away from her mother—the overbearing and strict Reina—and her mother's narrow idea of what shape Blanca's life should take. While Reina finds Blanca’s dream of pursuing fashion design a wasteful flight of fancy, Blanca sees possibility . . . and she knows if she doesn’t leave now, she might never. Of course, following your passion isn’t easy, and when Blanca arrives in New York City without a job or a roof over her head, she’s rescued by a kindly baker named Emile, who takes her in. With Emile comes his eclectic group of roommates, all living in the same brownstone, who welcome Blanca into their weird, wonderful world. Together, Blanca and her new chosen family discover that love and encouragement are key ingredients in the recipe for making your dreams come true.

This was phenomenal. The story, the art style, and the colors were fantastically done. The illustrations were so vibrant that I had to pause as I was reading, point my screen to my sister, and say, "look at this!" I was very impressed with it all.

I felt such a connection to this story: yearning (and in the main character's case, actually doing) to leave everything you know to start life anew, following your dreams, and cutting off everyone in your life from before. The main character really just DID THAT. Jealous. The author's note at the end made clear what I was feeling the whole time: this story is inspired by fairy tales. It's inspired by found family and quests and following your dreams. I loved that aspect of it.

The queer found family was everything to me. Even though the cast of characters is large, the reader gets a special scene between each of them and Blanca which really helped differentiate and flush them out. I'm super excited to see where character development goes in the second volume. My mouth was literally HANGING OPEN at the ending. Howwwww can I wait an entire YEAR to see what happens next?!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

That ending!!!
This was a fantastic graphic novel. The storytelling was phenomenal, the art was bright and gorgeous, and it was a perfect length. The representation was widespread and as a queer person I appreciated that so much.
A great found family story about growing up, exploring who you are, and following your dreams.
And did I mention that ending? Can't wait for Volume 2!

At this point I think it's fair to say OniPress is the leader of queer rep in comics!

I loved this and how unapologetically queer it is. Can't wait for the next volume!!!

Slay! Where to even begin. I need Volume 2 now. This was so enjoyable and inspiring to read. I couldn’t put this down.

Blanca ran away from an overbearing mother to pursue her dream in NYC. She meets a group of amazing people. Each person in this story is brilliantly written and show case many different people and lives. I have so many good things to say about this book. I also enjoy that it has so much representation and doesn’t make all the characters fit in one specific niche. I also enjoy that even though there are so many characters you really do get time with almost all of them to get to know them instead of it just being focused on the main character. I promise it’s done in a good way and where it doesn’t take away from the main story.

I need the second volume like yesterday. I can’t not wait to see more from Terry and Matty.

Graphic Novel palette cleansers are my favorite in between really heavy books and I completely devoured this one! It was fast paced, with a lot of representation in it for me. I also found the characters to be funny and relatable and could see many volumes coming from this dynamic. If you are into found families this book is for you and you won’t be able to stop yourself from falling in love with all the different characters we are introduced to. Definitely a 5 star read for me!

Thank you to NetGalley, the Publisher and the Author for this chance!!!!

I really really enjoyed this one!
I devoured it!!
I want MORE!!!!

We follow Blanca, who leaves home at 18 to make it in New York where she meets Emile and moves in with him and his many roommates. We got to meet everyone one on one, as Blanca has personal conversations with them and learns about their personal struggles and stories. I new her "true love" was too good to be true and called him out immediately. If only Blanca could see.
Her mother is strict and bossy and she probably has her reasons for pushing her daughter in a certain direction, but that woman has obviously some unsolved issues and gives of very "EVIL STEPMOTHER" vibes.....😆
I love the representation the LGBTQ+ Community gets.

Loved it!
Need Vol 2 NOW!!!

I loved this! A story that revels in the magic of self-discovery and self-invention. Blanca runs away from her mother's expectations and finds a new family in the form of her glamourous and diverse queer housemates, who encourage her to pursue her dream of working in fashion. I'm very much looking forward to volume 2 and will continue to recommend this far and wide!
