Description

Black Lives is an exciting new graphic novel series from award-winning author Tonya Bolden and illustrator David Wilkerson. Great Minds of Science celebrates the lives and contributions of Black scientists throughout history.

Matilda Evans (physician). Archie Alexander (civil engineer). Gladys West (mathematician). Ayana Elizabeth Johnson (marine biologist). These aren’t names that many people learn about in school, but they’re some of the greatest scientists that people should know about—doctors, engineers, mathematicians, and biologists. Each of them faced challenges as they rose to the top of their professions, but they didn’t back down.

- I love how informative and educational this book is! The illustrations make it very inviting, even for younger children. My daughter and I both enjoyed this, and appreciate the light it shines on important black figures who have helped shape and influence the development of science.

- I was able to read this book as an ARC and appreciate NetGalley, ABRAMS Fanfare, Tonya Bolden, and David Wilkerson for the opportunity to preview it.

First, I cannot wait for this book to be printed in September so that I could buy it for my classroom library. It is the first in a nonfiction graphic novel series and I am excited to continue reading the other books that are to come. As a graphic novel, the first thing that attracted me to the book was the beautiful, colorful cover. David Wilkerson does a great job illustrating the book - the images provide details that might be lost to the reader otherwise (i.e. peoples' appearances, historic fashion/places, and events that were mentioned. The pictures did the text justice and added more to the stories.

Great Minds of Science tells the stories of 9 individuals whose contributions to the world of science were not given the spotlight that they should have received. People who broke molds and made advancements despite the systems in place (such as pervasive racism) so that others could now follow in their footsteps. I love that this book was made into a graphic novel instead of just an anthology of biographies as it would give more children access to it. Tonya Bolden's writing is brief but packs just enough information onto each page to keep us entertained, but also learning about these amazing scientists. I enjoyed details such as the three word descriptors and little summaries used to start off the chapters, and the timelines after the story is told, which help the readers put the scientist's life into perspective.

This book is well researched and would be a great asset to any elementary, middle or high school classroom as well as any child's personal home library. – Shailyn Rivas ( Educator) – 5 stars

- A graphic novel about black scientific minds that have made a difference in the world. I thought this was a great way to introduce students to these people that are often overlooked amongst the traditional white scientists. Definitely recommend! – Christine Piepmeier (Educator) – 5 stars
