Description

America has become a Police State Lite. A dirty bomb scare in L.A. has led to a national hysteria. Drones patrol the skies. Civil liberties have been dramatically curtailed. The Patriot Amendments have been added to the Constitution. The Homeland Police and Patriot Tribunal have exclusive jurisdiction over all legal actions implicating national security. Enter Blingbling, the last literate member of the sole surviving band of Neanderthals. Equipped with the gift of learning, he is sent into the world to earn money for his people, who live in squalor on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. His dancing talent earns him respect and a name. It also earns him the attention of a hip-hop group whose front man frames him in the murder of a rival. Raleigh, retained as his attorney by other competitors, initially believes Bling’s made-up story, intended to protect his people. But when the Homeland Police conduct a routine DNA swab and find Bling matches no known human genotype, Raleigh undertakes his own inquiries and discovers the truth. Will Raleigh choose to help the Neanderthals rather than advance his career? Will Bling be set free?

Advance Praise

“This is a one-of-a-kind novel, a bizarre but gripping amalgam of anthropology, political diatribe, and speculative science fiction, a hard-boiled thriller about a Neanderthal who gets arrested by Homeland Security in a nightmare version of the not-too-distant future. Terry Hawkins is a bold and fearless writer.”

--Tom Perrotta, author of The Leftovers

“In an America where citizens and aliens alike are terrorized by the anti-terrorist forces of Homeland Security and a belief in evolution can be subversive, a hard-boiled, soft-hearted New York lawyer battles to save the world's last surviving band of Neanderthals. Deeply gripping and disturbing, American Neolithic provokes the reader to consider why we so fear the Other, and why the Other has very good reason to fear us.”

--Eileen Pollack, author of Breaking and Entering

What begins as a hard-boiled legal thriller veers off into completely unexpected territory in Terence Hawkins's harrowing novel. American Neolithic, while toggling between two very different voices, is bone-dry witty, affecting, and never less than riveting.

--Teddy Wayne, author of The Love Song of Jonny Valentine and Kapitoil

Terence Hawkins has created a fascinating political satire involving a world not quite our own, but terrifying enough in its similarities. American Neolithic is overflowing with ideas, the narrative running on overdrive at all times. Reading this book felt like a fever dream, which I mean in the best possible way, an extrasensory experience.
