"In Zegaajimo, eleven Indigenous voices share eleven takes on horror. From a bad winter’s night at the rez bingo hall, to a giant monster terrorizing a lone ice fisher, these stories speak to NDN Country’s diverse range of talented voices, and sorts of horrors—such as Chad’s extreme aquaphobia in Drew Hayden Taylor’s “Water Torture”; the consequences to a woman bent on making it on her own, in her own way, who pays dearly for ignoring protocols for hunting and killing game in Francine Cunningham’s “A Season for Everything”; and the aliens of Richard Van Camp’s satirical “Mouthless,” a horror/invasion from space crossover story that celebrates ‘80s pop culture. Eleven Indigenous master story crafters weave retellable tales of urban horror, through the horrors of isolation, and remote communities.
