Description

This bittersweet but lighthearted book from one of the funniest duos in webcomics roasts our human folly while also creating moments of wonder and appreciation for our beautiful, fragile, messed-up planet.

The webcomics duo War and Peas presents a hilariously irreverent book of comics paying tribute to a subject near and dear to all of us: Planet Earth. Utilizing underrepresented points of view including those of animals, icebergs, anthropomorphized recyclables, the ghosts of trees, aliens, a horny flower, and a teenage praying mantis named Timmy who is understandably terrified of his species’ mating process, Hi, Earth packs a Noah’s Ark-size cast into just over 100 delightful pages. These sweet and apocalyptic comics celebrate the wonders and weirdness of Earth even as we hurtle toward an uncertain future.

Hi, earth is a satirical and lighthearted graphic novel that comments on climate change and mocks human folly.

At 106 pages this is a very quick read. I found myself genuinely laughing out loud at a number of pages. It is not a story as such but more a collection of mini comics, each 1/2 pages telling a humorous tale about life on earth. Some of the humour I would like as slightly dark in nature but nothing horrifically over or offensive.

I enjoyed the recurring characters and jokes that are scattered throughout this book. I also liked the art style and think it really fits the tone.

Would recommend to anyone looking for a quick fun read.

Thank you to NetGalley and Andrew McMeel Publishing for providing an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

(Please excuse my english, it's not my native language). Probably one of the funniest comics with a sharp view on modern issues such as climate change, sexuality, feminism... The drawing is simple and makes the humor even more efficient. If it is ever released in my country I'd be happy to share it!

This book is hilarious as everything by War and Peas is. The commentary on global warming and the state of our world was handled with humor. Darkly funny and a quick read, I highly recommend this book.

This is a fun collection of comics about climate change, the destruction of the planet and space. I'd previously read and enjoyed the authors' other War and Peas book. Hi, Earth was also an enjoyable read.

A lighthearted, humorous approach to some pretty rough themes about the current state of our world in regards to climate change and humans being humans. 🙃

I love the War and Peas comics, and Hi, Earth was a fantastic collection. It is funny and a little heartbreaking, but the illustrations definitely make it worth a read. If you have enjoyed any of the War and Peas comics, then definitely give this one a try!

Thanks to NetGalley, Jonathan Kunz, Elizabeth Pinch, and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the chance to read and review. My opinions are my own!

This was a quick and really fun read. Filled with wry and sometimes dark humor, this satirical collection of comic strips was both entertaining and committed. It was a mix of one-shots and running jokes about the way humans keep destroying nature and thus running to their inevitable end.
Some of the situations made me laugh more than others, but it is the perfect read for people wanting to read something fun which can still make them reflect on climate change.

Okay that was hilarious, I'm currently tucked up ill in bed and this had me actually laughing out loud.

It manages to even make some serious themes funny which is impressive.

Loved it, already want to buy a copy.

A wonderfully irreverent & hilarious collection of strips with environmental / climate change themes. Unafraid to be quite blunt. I couldn't put it down.

Hi, Earth is a collection of single and double page comics created by the duo War and Peas. Steeped in nihilism, Pich and Kunz offer us a peak into their brand of wry humour. All to confront us with an undeniable truth: If we keep going like this as humans we will inevitably bring about not only the death of nature, but ourselves.

While they bring attention to humanity's hubris, it isn't only gloom and doom. Pich and Kunz have a talent for bringing levity to these topics, and even a touch of hope at times. Maybe extinction is around the corner, but a hug feels nice regardless.

Hi, Earth is suitable for adult audiences. This collection is perfect for you if you enjoy climate change awareness with a dose of nihilism à la the “This is fine” dog meme. It would also make a great gift for anyone with a darker sense of humour.

This is humor, with a hard bit to it. All the comics in this collection have to do with climate change, and the humor behind it, such as two ice bergs talking about what live was like in their day, or a woman trying to save the manatees, and someone says “What have the manatees ever done for us?”

Nothing outrageously funny. More like a little giggle here in there, because how fun it is to talk about hurtling into the disaster that we are headed for.

Then there are jokes that have nothing to do with climate change, such as the cat seeing a poster that says “lost cat” and he says “I’m not lost. I’m finding myself.”

Cute, quick, coffee table, or gift sort of book.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book is coming out, of all days, April 1st 2025.

Want to read a short book with a lot of puns about global warming? Then this book might be right up your alley as it has a bunch of little comics that are all talking about global warming in cute little pictures and puns. The art is really well done and the way this was done is unique

Hi, Earth is a hilariously thought provoking comic covering topics such as climate change, natural resources, and even aliens. I thoroughly enjoyed the short 4-paneled segments of the book and it was well paced. Even with the humorous atmosphere, Kunz and Pich show the reader the massive effects of human urbanization and commercialism on the environment. My personal favorite re-occurring joke was the praying mantis character Timmy and his journey dealing with the morbid realities of praying mantis romance. Hi, Earth's short length provides a fun read and multiple laugh out loud moments for readers.

I rate this book a 4/5 stars and would recommend it to my friends! Be aware of some adult language and themes when reading.

A sweet (and sarcastic) collection of comics from the War and Peas team, featuring Planet Earth. Both laugh out loud and cringe-worthy. Excellent illustrations and sharp, witty text.

Many people will be familiar with “War and Peas” and their comics from Instagram - whether because they consciously follow them or because they have already shared a post in their story without realizing it.

The typical formal structure of the webcomics is four panels arranged in a square. Perfectly instagrammable. Few exceptions in the book fall outside this “Instagram grid”.

Thematically, Jonathan Kunz and Elizabeth Pich focus on the demise of our beautiful Earth and the ridiculousness that we humans happily contribute to it.
Recurring characters are aliens, apocalyptic icebergs, the earth itself (best dialog: “Hi, Earth. How are you?” ”Oh, I'm gonna be fine. Don't know about you guys tho."), mountains and animals that laugh at the arrogance of humans. And many more.

You might think it's cynical. But you also have to admit it: But true.

I had so much fun reading this! The dark humor was absolutely perfect. Each page is a standalone climate-related (and life-related) dark humor comic. It had me literally laughing out loud with how well the sheer doom of it all was captured in just a single cartoon page! A truly hilarious and equally poignant take on climate change and what our world is going through.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance copy of this title.

I really enjoyed reading this one. It tackles a bunch of issues but with a fun, light-hearted twist. Some of them made me laugh so plus points on that. I also like the art style a lot! I can recommend this to others.

I really enjoyed this collection of comics. I found myself wanting them to have been sorted into chapters by theme because there are definitely distinct themes in their work overall and in this book in particular.

Hi, Earth is a witty and thought-provoking graphic novel that blends humor with climate exploration. The pages consist of perspective on human behavior, our environmental impact, and the oddities of daily life. Kunz's sharp writing and Pich's expressive illustrations create a unique narrative that's both entertaining and reflective. The book cleverly balances dark humor with a sense of wonder, making it a thought-provoking commentary on humanity's place in the cosmos. Hi, Earth is a quirky, visually striking read that will leave readers both laughing and contemplating the future of our planet. I physically laughed out loud multiple times while reading this and will continue to re-read whenever I need a good giggle.

Hi, earth is made by the duo behind War and Peas.

It's an ideal read to cope with climate anxiety and gives an insight into the emergency of dealing with climate change from the view point of mother earth, animals, mountains, planets and so on.

Some comics made me laugh out loud.

I already want to gift it to everyone I know.

"Hi, Earth" is a collection of short comics, that humorously depict different serious (and less serious) topics.

While the themes are mainly about global warming and climate change, many of them are broader than that and depict various life situations.

The way the authors use humor (sometimes darker humor) to depict serious topics is brilliant.
It makes for a quick read that is not so heavy but leaves you with some greater insights and makes you think about it long after reading it. I found it to be witty and creative.
The sense of humor matches my own, so I think this book just clicked for me.

I also enjoyed the illustration style used in the book.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this to people who enjoy short comic formats that tackle heavy topics satirically.

This was a really fun and quick read. I can't remember the last time I snorted this much while reading a book. The humour is satirical and can, at times, be pretty dark. Nothing I ever shy away from and also generally topical when it comes to climate change jokes and other topics approached in this graphic novel. .

I also really enjoyed the art. Very "this is fine" meme energy, which fits perfectly for the type of humour. I highly recommend it for adults who enjoy a dark sense of humour. Also a huge fan of the "thank you" page at the end. Perfect way to wrap this book up!

This book is dark humor in some of its finest form. The perfect type of comedy to deal with the world burning down around you. This is the type of humor that finally makes you feel like you’re not alone in your very confidently formed opinions. Absolutely hilarious and almost always respectful, which we don’t see often in comedy anymore. Cute stuff for sure!

A fun and quick read. I already knew a lot of the comics because I follow Jonathan and Elizabeth's work, but it was good to revisit the comics. They have this interesting blend of humour and quirkiness.

This is a collection of webcomics, some of which you may have seen online separately (I certainly have). As with any collection, it's uneven: some are hilarious, some are just okay (or should be read in a different mood than I did). Most are related to various aspects of humankind's impending demise due to climate change, but there are also random other strips, such as those featuring a recurring character - a teenage praying mantis and the drama of his life, as he doesn't want to be eaten by his future wife and gets into trouble on "Bring your dad to school" day.

I think this makes a great coffee table book, as the best way to interact with it is to open it on a random page and read a few pages.

I am grateful to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for a free eARC; the above opinion is entirely my own.

"Hi, Earth" is a graphic novel aimed squarely at adults by the duo behind "War and Peas," Jonathun Kunz and Elizabeth Pich. Tackling global warming and other darker parts of nature, this graphic novel will make you laugh, while also reminding you how screwed we are. Made up of short comics (some one-shots and some with recurring jokes), this is a quick read. A must buy for people who enjoy dark humor. This is a suggested purchase for adult graphic novel collections.

Thank you to NetGalley, Andrew McMeel Publishing and War and Peas for providing an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own - although I'm a silly human.

The moment I opened Hi, Earth and saw the first gag comic, I knew this had to be one of those Instagram webcomic artists who made a book - and, lo and behold, I was right. War and Peas' unique blend of sarcasm, humor, and sharp commentary quickly turned me into a new fan, and I promptly followed them on Instagram. Their ability to tackle serious issues with wit and absurdity is nothing short of brilliant.

At its core, this comic explores themes of ecology, climate change, and human stupidity, with recurring characters that truly stand out. Among them are a teenage praying mantis terrified of the breeding process, aliens who laugh at humans but adore our cats and dogs, and other planets that are scared of Earth "infecting" them with humans. These characters and their quirky situations bring humor to important topics, making complex issues more approachable without losing the gravity of the message.

What surprised me most was how genuinely I laughed out loud at most of the gag comics. The humor is sharp, relatable, and hits the mark more often than not. War and Peas have truly found the perfect formula for combining hilarity with a critique of our environmental impact and the general absurdity of human behavior. Their work is an excellent example of how comics can both entertain and educate.

This comic isn't just for comic book lovers - it's a fantastic gift for anyone who enjoys quirky, sarcastic, and hilarious content that's still critical of societal issues. With over a million followers, War and Peas have certainly found their audience, and it's clear why. Their ability to mix humor and advocacy in such a light-hearted, yet impactful way is exactly what makes them a perfect duo for this project.

The cover of Hi, Earth immediately caught my attention as it reminds me of the meme of the dog sitting in a house on fire saying, “This is fine.” It’s an incredibly eye-catching image that perfectly encapsulates the satirical tone of the graphic novel while highlighting the pressing issue of climate change. The juxtaposition of a lighthearted, almost wholesome art style with such a serious topic—one that tackles the urgency of environmental disasters like the wildfires in Los Angeles—is brilliantly executed. It’s a book that manages to represent the gravity of climate risk while keeping the mood approachable, engaging, and even funny.

At just 106 pages, Hi, Earth is a quick and punchy read that delivers a delightful mix of dark humor and biting commentary. Rather than being a traditional narrative, this graphic novel is a collection of mini-comics—each about half a page—each offering a humorous, sometimes absurd, and occasionally dark take on life on Earth. The tone is irreverent, but the underlying themes of climate change, environmental destruction, and humanity’s folly are explored with remarkable insight and wit. While the comics may make you laugh out loud, they also leave you with much to think about after you’ve turned the last page. The recurring characters and jokes add a layer of continuity, creating a sense of cohesion throughout the book, even as it flits from one topic to another.

What makes Hi, Earth stand out is the way it manages to deal with heavy subjects like extinction, global warming, and human stupidity in a way that feels accessible. The humor is dark, but it’s never overwhelming or offensive, and it allows the reader to process difficult topics without feeling weighed down. This makes the book an excellent choice for those experiencing climate anxiety or anyone who feels helpless in the face of the environmental crises we’re currently witnessing. The graphic novel’s perspective, often seen through the eyes of Mother Earth, animals, or even inanimate objects like mountains and planets, provides a refreshing point of view on these urgent issues. It’s a great way to cope with the anxiety that can come from thinking about the state of the world—especially as it delivers that much-needed laugh, even when discussing such dire subjects.

The art style is another highlight of the book. The illustrations are simple, yet full of personality, with clean lines and expressive characters that perfectly complement the humor. There’s an innocence to the artwork that makes the more serious themes easier to digest, and it serves as a reminder that while the issues presented are serious, the message can still be delivered with a sense of playfulness. This is a book that feels like it’s having fun with its serious subject matter, even as it gets its point across.

In a time when many of us feel overwhelmed by the climate crisis and its global implications, Hi, Earth offers a much-needed release. It’s not just a comic; it’s a satirical commentary that encourages reflection while keeping things light. It’s a brilliant balance of humor and seriousness, one that will resonate with readers of all kinds, whether you're a fan of webcomics like War and Peas (the duo behind this project) or simply someone who enjoys a fresh take on climate change through a unique lens.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, insightful read that will leave you thinking long after you’ve finished. Whether you’re a comic book enthusiast, an environmental advocate, or just someone in need of a good laugh, Hi, Earth is the perfect book to gift to friends, keep on your coffee table, or turn to when you need to smile in the face of an all-too-real crisis. It’s a clever, creative, and essential addition to any collection.

This was a fun read with comics focused on climate change. Featuring cute art and a dark sense of humor, these short comics might be something you'd see on a social media site and share out to your friends. Unfortunately increasingly more timely, it's a great collection to share with likeminded friends.

I actually really enjoyed this. It's very adult and very dark in the humor at times but that vibes for me so I thought it was funny. I would be interested to see more from this duo. And the art style was fun!

For a silly, kind of horrifying, but also quick, fun time, I'd say this one is worth it.

The art style is pretty to look at and the dark humor is hilarious and very fitting with the theme. Admittedly, despite the serious topics of our imminent demise and the total collapse of society due to climate change, this graphic novel manages to bringforth laughters in me. I definitely recommend Hi, Earth to anyone who needs a laugh amidst our bleak reality.

Feelings
As soon as I saw the cover I was hooked. The artists have such an easily recognizable art style and sense of humour. They did an amazing job once more with this collection and most stories really did hit home for me. It baffles me to see such small stories bringing such intense emotions. One story can be made up of only 4 images and still have that plot twist gotcha moment and it's fascinating.

Disclaimer that this is NOT suited for children.

What did I just read??? So much of this book is hilarious! It is also odd, but serious at times. At first, I thought it was solely going to be about how humans pollute the earth - a weighty subject, and I was hoping for a more comical read. Thankfully, I kept turning the pages! There is some strange humor in this book, but it cracked me up. I found myself laughing loudly in so many spots. We meet different life forms and creatures including praying mantises, giraffes, whales, flowers, trees and more, and we see what they might be thinking about their lives. It’s not always what you’d expect - chuckle, chuckle. I marked a bunch of the funnier pages so I can go back and laugh again. The drawings are well done and colorful too. Hi, Earth is a quick 104 pages, so if you’re unsure about it, just give it a chance. I’m glad I did. Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the digital ARC.

I just finished Hi, Earth by Jonathan Kunz and Elizabeth Pich, and honestly, it’s like the funniest, weirdest love letter to our messed-up planet. These webcomic geniuses (the duo behind War and Peas) have created a collection of comics that roast everything about human life while also making you appreciate how absurd and beautiful Earth really is. The book is full of strange characters like a horny flower, anthropomorphized recyclables, a scared teenage praying mantis named Timmy who is NOT ready for the mating process, and even some aliens trying to figure us out. It's like *Noah's Ark* if the animals were all weirdly relatable.

What I loved is how it balances humor and the deep stuff. It’s hilarious—seriously, I was laughing out loud at least once a page—but then you get these unexpected moments that actually make you stop and think. The way it pokes fun at our planet's problems while still showing love for it is a real feat. If you're into quirky, dark humor and comics that make you look at Earth through a totally different lens, *Hi, Earth* is a must-read. It’s 100 pages of pure weirdness, and I’m here for it.

"Hi, Earth" is a charming blend of humor, wit, and quirky insights that explore the foolishness of modern life through the lens of an alien observer. The comic's clever writing and minimalist illustrations make it both relatable and deeply engaging. Kunz and Pich artfully balance lightheartedness with thought-provoking commentary, making "Hi, Earth" a delight for readers who appreciate sharp, relevant humor. Highly recommended for anyone looking to laugh and reflect on the human condition in tandem!
