Maddy had arrived home from work, stressed, tired and unable to think of anything worse than cooking dinner. She was contemplating popping one of her pills to relax herself, but knew she needed to have her wits about her for when Ben arrived home. She never knew what mood he would be in – whether she’d have to tiptoe around him, fearful of snapping that slender thread of anger, or perhaps he’d be happy, pleased to be home with his family.

Seven year old Caleb, nine year old Gracie and fourteen year old Emma knew their father’s moods were unpredictable, even at their young age, but they also knew how to get around him, especially the younger two. Emma was going through a period of teenage angst – she spent a lot of time in her room. But that evening the scream that echoed from the living room following the sound of breaking glass, and the discovery that Caleb had a bad cut on his foot led once more to Ben’s fury erupting. For he walked in the front door to blood, chaos and a sobbing child – of course it was Maddy’s fault…

When Maddy called Ben to pick her up, he was on his way to work, late for an important meeting. After initially refusing, he finally grudgingly detoured – his white hot anger at his wife for making him even later, the teaming rain, the heavy traffic; all combined to create a disaster which had catastrophic consequences. What would be the outcome of Ben’s volatile temper for this normal, everyday family?

Accidents of Marriage is an excellent novel. Told alternatively in the voices of Maddy, Ben and Emma it is blended beautifully, showing the depths of love, family, hope and despair. The verbal abuse by Ben, the anxiousness of Maddy, the fear of the children – all created an image that we have all read about, or even know about. I felt disgusted by Ben, sorry for Maddy and the children - Randy Susan Meyers did not disappoint with her latest novel. I have no hesitation in recommending Accidents of Marriage highly.
