I have read and enjoyed Becca’s Hush, Hush series, so when I saw this romantic thriller, I just had to get it! I wanted to see if she could sweep me away in a new world and keep me on the edge of my seat. I can tell you she did a fantastic job with Black Ice and I was certainly glued to the pages (My hubby even got annoyed because I was still reading at 11.45 at night… I just had to get to the end!!).

Britt has planned a camping/hiking trip with her best friend Korbie since her boyfriend, Calvin, split up with her eight months ago. Calvin is Korbie’s older brother, and Britt has crushed on him since they were kids, so she thought that this would bring them back together. The girls become lost when the blizzard comes in and land on the doorstep of a cabin with two guys they don’t know.

Britt is a character you would want to be your friend. She doesn’t just think about herself and made plans to protect her friend. On this journey she showed courage and stood up when needed. She realised that she isn’t a scared girl and doesn’t need to rely on a guy. Seeing her grow throughout this book was amazing, especially when she pushed herself.

When I was finished this book, I sat back and contemplated about it. I thought that it was very well done and felt that I picked up the clues along the way. I had my suspects early on and even by the time I figured it out, it didn’t take anything away from me enjoying the book. Becca Fitzpatrick blew me away with this story, with well fleshed out characters and a gripping plot. If you enjoy Beccas books or a good suspenseful read you should give this standalone a try!

I have read and enjoyed Ms Fitzpatrick's Hush, Hush series very much, so when I saw this book on Netgalley I had to request it, as I wanted to see if the Author could write a good YA that was non paranormal, I do like suspense books as much as Paranormal books and I can say that I enjoyed this book too.

The main character is Britt and she has planned a hiking/camping trip in the Grand Teton Mountains in Wyoming with her best friend Korbie. Just before heading off Britt bumps into Korbie's older brother Calvin who had split up with Britt 8 months ago, Britt still harbours feelings for Calvin and when they have a bit of a spat in the Gas Station, Britt steals some items out of Calvins Glove compartment in his car... And I had no issue with her little escapade, he was a complete jerk, and my opinion didn't really change through the book. This little act of spitefulness ends up being a life saver for Britt in the near future!

Korbie's parents own a lodge in the Teton's and thats where the girls plan to use for their base, on the drive up, they run into a blizzard, after some thought the girls decide its better to try to set out on foot for the Lodge or another cabin... And thats when the adventure really gets going!

I really took to Britt's character, she's spent most of her life relying on her father/brother/Calvin to protect her, and after Calvin's betrayal she decided that enough was enough and she planned this trip to show once and for all that she could fend for herself. As you read the story you watch her grow, she finds courage and determination throughout the trials that are set in front of her.

Korbie on the other hand hasn't changed - her family treat her like a princess (a point that Calvin hates as his parents have constantly belittled him and never supported him, down to actual physical abuse) Britt even looks out for Korbie, and sticks her neck out to ensure her safety is paramount. This was another aspect I liked about Britt, she thought of others before herself.

As the plot unravelled I had my suspicions to what and who was responsible for certain things, but Becca Fitzpatrick still managed to sneak in a plot twists to keep me guessing.

If you enjoy a suspense story with well developed characters, then I would recommend this book without hesitation. I will certainly be looking out for it in the bookstores come Release Day.

The Beginning.

The beginning of Black Ice is pretty interesting. For a moment there I thought the actual story starts from that very point. However the beginning is more like a foreshadowing of what's going to come. I don't like to compare between authors, but I couldn't help getting a Dan Brown-ish feeling from the prologue and I really liked it :D Britt Pfeiffer.

While I don't find Britt's character mesmerizing, her gradual transformation is really interesting. At the start, she appears to be a little spoiled, living-in-the-moment kind of girl. Her whole life she's lived in a kind of bubble where she thought of herself as the damsel-in-distress who needs constant saving by her dad, her brother or her crush-cum-boyfriend-cum-ex Calvin. When she plans to go on a backpacking trip to Teton Range in order to show Cal that she can do better than throw fits over a breakup like a heartbroken belle, it changes her life, BIG time. It is in these dire situations that she finally realizes her capabilities and her dependencies.

"I watched how you and Korbie interacted, and it made me wonder if, back home, in front of your friends and family, you offer a slightly different version of the real Britt. A less capable version. You're not the girl here in the mountains. I like that you face your fears. And while it's not normally something people consider as a virtue, you're a very gifted liar."

While I like how she handled herself and the crisis, it often seemed a little impossible to see Britt think and do things as if she has always been an expert.

The Mysterious Guy :p

I love Jude (I prefer the name Jude more than the other one ;) ) His character has many layers (Why do I get reminded of onions every time I say 'layers'? Damn you Shrek!) He can be the hot and drool-worthy hunk, the carefree easy going guy you meet at a coffee shop and then again, he can be the brooding, intriguing, mysteriously creepy guy you wanna run miles away from. He is like a puzzle, and a pretty complex one at that, and that is what makes him to me all the more attractive :-D

Thanks to the publisher and the author for the review copy.
