Description
How a skeptical FBI agent reached out to a famous psychic for help on a baffling case – and the twenty-five-year crime-solving journey that followed
In the summer of 1998, FBI agent Bob Hilland reluctantly picked up the phone to call the famous psychic John Edward. Bob didn’t expect much from the call, but he was working on an unsolvable cold case and had nowhere else to turn.
What Bob never imagined was that the call would lead to a shattering of all his preconceived notions, a huge break in the cold case, and an unlikely crime-solving partnership that spanned twenty-five years.
As Bob and John took on more cases together, they slowly learned how to rely on each other and trust their skills, ultimately finding not only justice for the crimes they solved, but resolution and healing in their own lives.
Centering on the investigation of the gruesome John Smith murders that rocked the nation, Chasing Evil is a heart-stopping story of murder, justice, and finding help in unexpected places.

I would recommend this book to library patrons interested in true crime and psychics. This would be a great book for people interested in learning how and when law enforcement consults psychics and whether it helps solve cases or not.

True crime meets the paranormal in this fascinating look at the friendship between FBI agent Robert Hilland and world-renowned psychic John Edward. Hilland reluctantly turns to Edward to help solve a pair of murders in order to bring down a serial killer who preys on vulnerable women.
The unlikely duo develops a friendship that characterized by the need to bring justice to cold case victims. The result is a page-turner that looks at the struggle between the forces of good and evil played out on physical and spiritual planes, on this side and the other side of the veil.
And, while earthly justice is sometimes served, cosmic justice may not be as swift or as satisfying as we humans might wish.
Full Disclosure--NetGalley and the publisher provided me with a digital ARC of this book. This is my honest review.

Chasing Evil offers a compelling account of an unlikely partnership between FBI agent Bob Hilland and renowned psychic John Edward. The story begins in the summer of 1998, when Bob, desperate for new leads on a cold case involving the disturbing John Smith murders, reaches out to John Edward expecting little more than a long shot. What follows is a gripping journey that challenges traditional perceptions of crime-solving, blending law enforcement expertise with intuitive insights in a manner that's both intriguing and thought-provoking. What I appreciated most about this book is how authentically it portrays the evolution of trust between Bob and John. Their collaboration isn't painted as a miraculous breakthrough but rather as a gradual process of learning to rely on each other's skills. The narrative provides a nuanced look at how intuition and experience can complement each other in the pursuit of justice, offering a fresh perspective on solving complex cases. The book is well-paced, balancing suspenseful investigations with personal reflections from both authors. The detailed recounting of the John Smith case, along with other subsequent cases, keeps the reader engaged and invested. Additionally, the authors share candid moments of doubt, skepticism, and eventual acceptance, making their journey relatable and humanized. While some readers might approach this book with skepticism about the efficacy of psychic insights in criminal investigations, the authors present their experiences with honesty and humility. They don't claim to have all the answers but rather explore an uncharted territory that has the potential to aid law enforcement in ways previously considered unconventional. Overall, Chasing Evil is an engaging and thought-provoking memoir that challenges us to consider the boundaries of traditional policing. It's a testament to the power of open-mindedness, trust, and the pursuit of justice from unexpected sources. Whether you're a believer in psychic phenomena or simply interested in unique crime stories, this book offers valuable insights and a compelling narrative worth reading.

Regardless of what you believe about mediumship and psychic phenomena, Chasing Evil is a fascinating, harrowing, and thought-provoking read. The dynamic between skeptical FBI agent Bob Hilland and psychic medium John Edward is compelling as they forge an unexpected partnership to bring closure to cold cases. The blend of true crime and the supernatural kept me hooked, particularly as their efforts brought justice and healing in surprising ways. This book delves into the power of unlikely connections and challenges readers to keep an open mind.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for providing me with an eARC of Chasing Evil- Shocking Crimes, Supernatural Forces, and an FBI Agent’s Search for Hope and Justice prior to its publication.

A skeptic and a psychic join forces to solve cold cases. Sounds like the premise of a goofy sitcom, so you can imagine how delighted I was to find out this book! Utterly fascinating (and occasionally deeply unsettling). I loved reading about Hilland and Edward's relationship and the way they helped others come to, if not peace, then at least terms with the violence of the old cases that had never been solved. Highly recommend for fans of true crime!

Am I a true crime fan now? Not usually my thing but I couldn’t put this down! I loved the supernatural twist and the brotherhood these two strangers shared.

I love true crime and John Edward's. So I jumped into this book excited. And I wasn't disappointed. I wasn't sure how the back abd forth would go but it was very interesting hearing about the cases and how spirit lives helped solve them. Not everyone believes.. I'm a believer.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an early release of this book

Chasing Evil by Robert Hilland and John Edward was so interesting read for me.
I absolutely do NOT believe in psychics and the desperation to solve the case and involve the renowned psychic showed me how sincere Mr. Hilland was in his desire to solve the John Smith murders.
It was fascinating to read about the trust grow between the two and how two polar opposite people grew to trust and rely on each other in an attempt to catch a murderer and solve crimes.
The partnership and trust they developed with each other was riveting to read about and kept me enthralled to the end of the book.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in consideration of an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This book is intense with both the good and bad sides of mankind.
Robert Hilland, an FBI Agent, has devoted his life making our communities safe. He works with the well-known psychic medium, John Edwards, to solve difficult cases. Hilland and Edward are on the good side of making our world a better place.
Sadly, evil is also part of our world which causes all sorts of dark violent crimes and destruction. Much of the book takes readers into a nearly impossible case to solve. Hilland was determined to find two missing wives that were murdered by a man who was a pathological liar, an expert on everything, manipulator, dangerous with bad energy and yet, smart in many ways always covering his tracks.
Hilland also worked with various other extremely tough cases in the US and internationally. He talked about how he was so close to getting killed when miraculously he was able to escape several times from dangerous foreign countries. He was also next to the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center when they were hit causing a huge emotional impact. Many of the FBI cases made headline news.
For those who devour true on-the-edge crime stories, this is it. However, it wasn't easy for me to read as many parts were graphic. It was incredibly disturbing thinking about how some people can be so cruel driven by pure hatred. It leaves us with deep thoughts of the powerful balance between good and evil.
My thanks to St. Martin’s Essentials and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book with an expected release date of September 2, 2025.
