Description

Driving In Budapest tells the stories of regular people trying their best to navigate through life while they also try to navigate through one of Europe’s most fascinating and beautiful cities. Each one must find their destination while dealing with one way streets, clogged bridges, bully drivers and crazy taxis. There is no map to tell them how to get to where they’re going, they just have to keep trying to find their way.

From the Author

“Budapest is one of the most fascinating cities in the world, with one foot firmly planted in the west and the other just as firmly in the east. A score of armies have marched through, usually going east in victory and west in defeat. The city is over 1,000 years old, and it’s narrow streets and broad avenues make it a challenge to drive in while it’s history and flavor can make it difficult to navigate your way through life there as well. This collection of stories show how a disparate group of people do just that, live their lives with the ghosts of the past and the hopes for the future in a city that knows both. Meanwhile, the Danube just flows by, taking it all in……”

"The Cambridge Book Clubs in Massachusetts voted on this book, and it was great! It was clearly written with not just care of the characters, but an innovative understanding of people. Budapest has a magic and spirit of character, of history and pride not unlike the Londons and Parises of the world. I thank Gary Brill for sharing such a wonderful reflection of his experiences abroad in this mystical city.

There's dropped-in reminders of history, especially of World War II and Communism. You'll learn a few things, so if you get easily frustrated when you don't understand the historical significance of a story...first of all, don't be that person, because you're missing out. There's romance, comedy, family drama and mystery. Read this book and find out which of these five stories is your favorite" Tara Kelly, assistant book club organizer for Cambridge Book Clubs in Massachusetts

5 Stars

"I enjoyed reading the book which is composed of five short stories. This engaging easy to read book intertwines romance, mystery, and history. The author does a nice job drawing the reader into feeling as if he/she is in Budapest. The reader not only senses the grittiness of the post-communistic city and the frenetic pace of city life but also the beauty and culture that surrounds Budapest. Even though each short story could stand on its own, some of the characters connected throughout the book. The characters are interesting, often showing resilience and eternal hope." - Vicki Moroughan, Book Reviewer

The cover and description do not do justice to this book! The stories are all short and engaging, leaving the reader wanting to hear more. As an expat living in a different central European country, I quite identified with the cultural adjustments of some of the characters. I will be waiting for another book from this author!

Very interesting stories about a beautiful city that has human touch. The stories that deal with oppression and how history has changed the city & the people are my favorite. This book also show what love is & how we all need it to fill the spaces in our heart & lives.
