Description
A BEST BOOK OF THE 21st CENTURY, Kirkus
A new series from the author of The Raven Rings trilogy — Siri Pettersen!
Juva knows all about blood readers. Praised for their Sight, they are nothing but swindlers, preying on people’s fears for power and profit. Born by blood readers herself, she knows only too well, and she has vowed never to become one of them.
But when her family is threatened by vardari, the eerie lasting ones, who never age, Juva is entangled in a desperate hunt for the blood readers’ legacy: a dark secret that once changed the world, and may do so again.
In order to survive, she has to confront the terrifying childhood memory she fought to forget.
Iron Wolf is a new spellbinding fantasy mystery from Siri Pettersen, built on a Norse foundation, about blood, desire and addiction. It’s the first book in the vardari trilogy, an independent series set in the universe of the award-winning fantasy phenomenon The Raven Rings.

Kirkus Reviews, starred review
"An immersive, darkly exhilarating read."
In Pettersen’s new series opener set in the same universe as her Raven Rings trilogy, a young wolf hunter is drawn into an ancient struggle to which her family holds the key.
Born into a leading family of blood readers, Juva, 19, left home to hunt wolves rather than read blood samples and craft fake fortunes for the vulnerable, like the desperate blood users whose addiction will kill them.
Hunting’s a messy but vital job; wolf blood fuels the city of Náklav’s magical stone gates that serve as travel gateways. Her hunting companions are Juva’s chosen family now, but confused images from her father’s death haunt her. Did the devil kill him? Was the devil a wolf? Why did her mother insist Juva saw nothing, then demand she tell no one? What impels Juva to sketch wolves, then burn her drawings?
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Juva, the Might, a long-banished magical force, is returning to upend the powers of the vardari, shadowy immortals like Nafraím, who supplies readers with blood and bribes Juva’s blood-addicted ex-boyfriend to inform on her family. Taut and suspenseful, the intricate plot unwinds and repeatedly resets as Juva (and readers) uncover truths buried in ancient lies and traumatic memories.
More human than superhero, anxious, ethical, passionate Juva’s an apt heroine for hard times. The masterful worldbuilding and vivid Nordic setting populated with compelling secondary characters (most read as blond, Scandinavian analogs) are well served by the stirring prose.
An immersive, darkly exhilarating read. (Fantasy. 14-adult)

Iron Wolf was a really enjoyable read. The characters and the setting got me hooked. You get a dark, emotional fantasy book with interesting characters, who have different motivations. The main character goes through a lot. She learns more about her skills and about the secrets of her family. A big role plays her childhood trauma and how it connects to everything that is happening.
Thanks to Siri Pettersen and NetGalley for the ARC.

I really enjoyed this book. Siri Pettersen did an excellent job with characters and story line. I admit it was a little slow in the beginning, but once it got going, I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read more from this series. I highly recommend this one.
Thank you Net Galley ARC, Arctis Books USA, and Siri Pettersen

I did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did.
The writing it beautiful and i was hooked onto every single word.
I utterly devoured Iron Wolf and I’ll be heading straight onto book two.

If you enjoyed Siri Pettersen's previous series "The Might" you're gonna love this one. It takes place is the same world but it's completely possible to start this series without knowing anything of the first series.
The story centers around Juva, a wolf hunter and daughter of the leader of the Seida Guild of blood readers. Juva wants nothing to do with the blood readers her younger sister so desperately wants to be part of. After tragedy strikes her family she finds herself unwillingly the leader of the Seida guild and the target of enemies claiming she has the devil and they want it. Not knowing anything about what they are after Juva begins to dig deeper into her mother's life of cunning lies and cruelty to find she may know who the devil is after all.

Wow that was DARK. This is a horror fantasy blend with Nordic Mythology and LOTS of death and blood. It alternates limited third person point of views between a Vardari (a version of a vampire) and Juva, a blood reader (a version of a fortune telling witch). Except she's not really that but also is the most that in the entire book. It took a minute to get into for me. The world building was a bit slow, and I honestly cared much more about Juva than any Vardari. The translation was a bit clunky at times, but I found it easy to read still. I would definitely read the rest of this series because if Juva's exes have a comeback story, I'm kinda here for it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Arctis books for the ARC!

I enjoyed the book so much that I ordered a hard cover copy after reading it digitally! This book had me falling in love with characters and their development. Great plot that will leave you wanting more! I couldn’t put this book down once I started it.

Iron Wolf is the 1st book in the Vardari Duology.
It introduced me to a new world built on a Norse foundation about blood, desire and addiction. The book is filled with a rich world and character building that allowed me to escape into a world unlike any I have encountered.
It is a fantasy mystery centered around three main characters; Juva (her father was a hunter and her mother is one of 3 in charge of the blood readers), Nafraím, one of those who doesn’t seem to age and Rugen, who was honestly my least favorite character, selfish and only looking for the next score.
Wolf blood and wolf teeth are a currency in her city and she hunts them with her found family. I loved those characters. They are also in awe that Juva has an ability to sense where a wolf is, every time.
There is a lot going on in this book and therefore it felt very dense to me, but I still enjoyed it.
It is part of a world that the author has already built, but can be read as a standalone.
I love the fire in Juva and how circumstances lead her into a role she never wanted a part of, but at the same time she was made for.
I found the descriptions of their cities, beliefs and methods of travel fascinating. There is also storyline with Nafraím , that is, well it’s eye opening.
If you enjoy mythology, Norse traditions or a different type of fantasy mystery than this is probably the book for you. I will definitely be picking up the second book in this duology.
Also, while the end of this book is not what I would call a “Happily Ever After” it did give me all the feels and destroyed me in the best way.
Thank you to NetGalley, Siri Patterson, translator Tara Chace and publisher Arctis for the opportunity to read the translated copy of this book.
