Advance Praise

"Additional recommended books in selected series highlighted in this issue's Spotlight on Series Nonfiction: With their galloping rhythm and twists of gleeful humor, limericks offer an accessible, gun introduction to verse. Illustrated with candy-colored cartoons, this title in the Poetry Builders series uses the framework of a simple story about neighborhood kids to offer an overview of limerick-writing, including the poem’s length, rhythm, and structure as well as the surprise ending that’s often like a punch line. Delivering the basic information through a conversation among young people is certainly purposeful, but as the characters clarify the facts, students will find their own questions answered. Woven into the dialogue are the characters’ attempts to create limericks of their own, some of which fall flat, and young readers will take heart from these varying successes, which suggest that the point is to play around and have fun with the form, not worry about perfect lines. A closing spread offers more straightforward tips on limerick composition, while a final resource section includes a very brief glossary and a list of poetry-writing books and resources."

A cute little book That teaches young children How to write haikus

Great for elementary school teachers and homeschoolers, this book has a short story and explains how to write haikus. The illustrations are nice and bright and I think this book would be a great resource for teachers. I received this book free to review from Netgalley.

This is a fantastic book to help readers understand how to create (fun!) haikus. Writing poetry can seem daunting to many students but Henry and Hala Build a Haiku by Nadia HIggins walks though how to create haikus in a clear and easygoing way.

My wife is a lower grade teacher and I am recommending she get this book for her classroom library. As an 8th grade teacher I am going to look for this book too. It's easy to understand and I can see this book helping my students who struggle with writing poetry.

This would be perfect for the classroom. Kids will be interested in hearing it and it will make the lesson more fun for them. I really liked the illustrations, also.

This book will definitely catch the eye of some of those "I hate poetry" kids. They still may not like writing poetry, but they will definitely learn what haiku is from this book.. Having the instructions given in a story make it seem much more interesting and less irritating to kids who don't like poetry. On my to-buy list.
