Review of Daemon Seer

Midwest Book Review

It seemed like a miracle when two teens escaped the clutches of a sadistic killer, but 'miracle' was only partially involved: so, too, was the daemon who saved their lives.

Fast forward ten years and not only is the threat back (in the form of another killer -what are the chances of that?), but a flurry of supernatural beings have arrived: daemons who want to claim Lu as their own. The problem is, Lu is already 'owned' by the daemon Talion - and now it's time for the ceremony that will make that relationship official, even if Lu is totally against it, cognizant of the misery the women in her family have suffered in daemon relationships over the years:

I stopped a sarcastic comeback from forming in my mind, but he knew it anyway. Darkness twisted in his molten eyes. Pain flowered inside me. Its roots clutched my guts and unfurled until they claimed every muscle, bone, and nerve. My body exploded in agony. I knelt in the grass, bent over, my mouth gaping. The pain stopped as suddenly as it came but left me weak. I stayed on my knees.

Horror and fantasy blend in a story line that includes supernatural daemons, evil humans, a complex female relationship forged in strife and bound by mutual support and respect, and more.

Here is the stuff that superior horror is made of, with more than a dose of fantasy thrown in to capture audiences outside of the usual horror circles. They are stories of bonds forged and broken, heritage challenged, human killers encountered and fought, and the costs of love, marriage, and bondage.

Here, also, are gifts that come with consequences, ribald language (be forewarned), psychos and killers (both human and not), attempted rape, and scenarios where the perceived good guys become bad. So, if it's an engrossing saga of ownership, possession, and change that is desired in a fantasy that fuels its passions with overtones of horror, then Daemon Seer is the item of choice.

Daemon Seer is anything but predictable, and holding a dash of violence, it's compelling. And if prior fans of Mary Maddox recognize the characters from Talion (which followed the two girls' original encounters with demons and psychos alike), be advised that this is not so much a sequel as the beginning of a new adventure, and thus is presented as Book One of a projected series.

It starts a little choppy, almost like you're joining the book at a midpoint. But the story is dark and captivating and I'm interested to see where the story goes.

Daemon Seer by Mary Maddox is a psychological thriller that combines the supernatural with sadistic, creepy, stalker humans. This complex text deals with multiple forms of evil, demonic and human. The main characters in this novel, Luanda and Lisa are intense, dark characters. They are well developed and deep. In the novel prior to this, they were kidnapped and tortured as teens by Rad Sanders, serial killer. Lisa and Luanda are connected, not just by their past but also through the Daemons (demons) that saved Lu while abducted by Rad. In this novel, Lisa finds Lu (after several years have passed) and brings with her a psychotic police officer, Grifford Riley, who preys on women who have been victimized in the past. This novel is extremely intense. The writing is fabulous. Mary Maddox’s use of descriptive language and detail to create unforgettable characters increases the validity of the novel. I was filled with emotions (fear, anger, dread, hope) while reading it and found myself yelling inside for the main characters (Lu and Lisa) to kick butt and come out strong.
This book is filled with action making it a quick read. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Ken was Luanda's boss and had figured out who she really was. Luanda had seen her dad kill in front of her. She worked at CyberWatch. Ken's revelation had made Luanda nervous. Luanda had been kidnapped 10yrs ago when she was 15 by a serial killer. She was now Lu Darlington since the serial killer's book had come out. Lisa Duncan had also been with Luanda with Rad, the serial killer. He had destroyed Lisa's face. The mention of the book, Profess of Death, spooked Lisa. Lisa had had several operations to rebuild her face but she would never again be beautiful. Lu thought back to her abduction. Rad had become The Destroyer. He had intended to take her soul as well as her life. Talion, a Daemon, had saved Lu. Lu knows Lisa is running from something or somebody. Lu tells Lisa she's running from someone who smiles a lot. Lisa tells Lu to get out of her head. Lu told Lisa they were somehow connected. Lu told Lisa she could talk to her. Lisa told her Grifford Riley was after her. I found Lu to be loyal and tough, as she was a survivor. She was determined and stubborn until pain overtakes her. I don't usually get into possession stories, but this was actually pretty good. I recommend it.

Not going to lie, I had a feeling of lost at the beginning of this book and found out why, as there is a novella to read before. It does suck you in and is an interesting read. Just wish the novella was a bit easier to get.
