Description
What happens to a cat who goes through a wormhole?
Tom Gauld returns with Physics for Cats, his second collection of science-based cartoons for the New Scientist. Find out why every scientist worth their sodium chloride has a Tom Gauld cartoon taped to their electron microscope. This new batch of hilarious gags will be as important to every self-respecting scientist as a lab coat and goggles and oversize rubber gloves.
Find out what the hadron’s news alert about CERN says! Everyone asks, “What is dark matter?” and “Where is dark matter?” but do they ever take the time to ask, “How is dark matter?” Based all on previous data, we can predict with a 99.99% certainty that you will either laugh, guffaw, chortle or snort (we don’t have a large enough sample set to be able to say which particular type of mirth you will experience.)
Advance Praise
“Gauld is probably the first to even imagine such a thing as “science cartoons,” but some of their titles hint at the rich material he has found in a seemingly somber field.” —Gal Beckerman, The New York Times
“This British cartoonist is a master of heightening humor through restraint.” — Michael Cavna, The Washington Post
“Tom Gauld’s transformation of the humble stick figure is perhaps the most impressive sleight of hand you will witness.” — Irene Velentzas, The Comics Journal

Tom Gauld never ceases to delight! His clever wit and sense of humor are so unique and relatable. This was a great addition!

I love Tom Gauld's work soo much, my friends love his work, my coworkers love is work, he's one of those artists whose comics we show each other and all find funny. Did I kind of hope there would be more cat comics, with that title? Sure. But I was NOT disappointed.

Gauld is a master of the one page/low panel amount funny comic, and it really shows here in this science and cat focused collection.

Tom Gauld has collected another set of his one-panel science cartoons under the title of Physics for Cats. The fun starts with the cover and keeps up the fun through out the book. A call out to Faust appears early in the book as does Soren Kerkegaard and The Seventh Seal. Academics and online irritations make the cut as well has updated weather symbols. But my two favorite cartoons cover the concept of plagiarism and role-playing in real life. So if you want to laugh or at least smile, pick up this title!
Thanks Netgalley and Drawn & Quarterly for the chance to read this title!

In this collection of one page comics, Physics for Cats features humorous quips from a variety of scientific disciplines, from archeology to astronomy. It was a fun read, although because I am not super into science, some of the jokes admittedly went over my head. It also could have used more jokes featuring cats, like the title suggests. But overall, this was a funny and clever collection that is sure to have you laughing most of the time.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review!

I am a big fan of Tom Gauld. I'm a librarian, and you can probably guess my favorite of his comic collections: Revenge of the Librarians. I also adore The Little Wooden Robot and the Log Princess by Tom Gauld. I hope he will do more picture books in the future. I wasn't so sure that Physics for Cats would be for me. Cats, I get but physics...I'm not so good at science stuff. I am happy to tell you that no advanced scientific knowledge is necessary to enjoy these sly, witty comics. I also appreciate Gauld's unique artistic style, which is both simple and detailed at the same time. Don't ask me to explain that. Just get Physics for Cats and read it for yourself. You can thank me later.

Thank you to NetGalley for my Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.
This was a fun little read. I recommend to anyone who loves science and science related humor. I plan on buying this book for my scientist father later this year.

is a fun and interesting exploration of physics topics. I had my doubts, but it's very good!

As always Tom has made me laugh, chuckle to myself and smile from ear to hear. His books never fail to bring me joy. Sometimes the panels are “simplistic” but others are more busy and have lots going on but it always works so well. I take my time reading and savouring his work because I don’t want it to end. I follow him on social media and always thrilled when he posts the recent work he did for the Guardian…so much fun.

I have been a fan of Gauld since
first seeing his
quirky, esoteric
but utterly brilliant
comics pop up of Facebook.
All at once his work if
intelectual, literary,
high and both low brow.
Most of all these comics
are unique and
totally hilarious.

Very cute comics for those who like to think, whether or not they are scientists. Gauld dry humor is a wonderful antidote to anti-science thinking!

This is a collection of funny, goofy, and science-y comics from Tom Gauld, great for people who are already fans of his comics, or anyone with a bit of a science background looking for a laugh. Revenge of the Librarians is a favorite in our house, and this is another great bunch of comics, focused now on the lives and imaginations of scientists of all sorts. (I personally would have loved more cats — but still enjoyed reading through all of the comics!)
Very silly. It is genius in its simplicity. So many of the sciences were included. I know I didn't get all of the jokes, but since there were so many different disciplines I was able to understand others.
4 stars
This is a lighthearted and hilarious collection of science comics- perhaps the first of its kind! Would make a wonderful gift for anyone working in the field, or anyone that loves smarty-pants comedy.
I've seen work by this creator online and always enjoy them. The details are simple but robust-- each cell is perfect, just the right amount of illustration to convey the scene and the joke. For readers of xkcd.
eARC from NetGalley.

As someone who knows NOTHING about science, I still found these comics really fun and informative. It reminded me a lot of The Far Side Comics by Gary Larson.

Thank you to Drawn and Quarterly and NetGalley for the e-ARC.
Another delightful romp from the mind of Tom Gauld, author of "Revenge of the Librarians " and "Department of Mind-Blowing Theories" among others! This time it is a collection of his comics with a science-bent. A quick read, where I found myself chuckling and laughing out loud! I highly recommend this or any of his works.
This is such an adorable way to talk about physics while looking at hilarious situations of all the shenanigans cats get into. This is a great way to introduce either the subject of science or kitty mischief to anyone.
Matthew M, Librarian
Tom Gauld is kind of the modern master of minimalist comics. Feels very far side, but the art style is even more rudimentary (in a good way). The comics are clever, thoughtful, and betray a deep knowledge of the whole sweeping arc of scientific history and inquiry. Plus the title and cover are both very eye catching.

I really enjoyed this book. As someone who loves science, it's so nice to have a joke book that specifically has science jokes.
Librarian 71930
I can't say this is hysterical, because I never once caught myself bursting out in laughter, but I was completely delighted by each of these cartoons. I understood some of the jokes more than others, but this was overall lovely and I will suggest it for purchase at my library.
This is a delightful collection of comics based around STEM. I really enjoy Tom Cauld's art style and his insightful understated humor. This is a fun collection for any scientist in your life. I have only one nitpick. It's not REALLY about cats. Kind of like his librarian's comic collection was much more about writers and the publishing industry. Slightly misleading titles here.
Still fun. Four stars!
The thing about reviewing a book of Tom Gauld cartoons is that I don’t know what to say beyond “there’s a new Tom Gauld collection, go get it.” Physics for Cats collects 160 science cartoons previously published in New Scientist.
Gauld’s sense of humor is dry and smart. I love his insight and observations, as well as how creative he can be with the comic format. Examples include an experiment about being in a cartoon, the “conceptual phrase” of a project indicated by dotted lines fading out, and a rumination on Kierkegaard’s thoughts on timelines.
The science focus sometimes means making jokes about life in a lab, sometimes means pondering the nature of reality. Or there might be a philosophical observation, or math or science in everyday life. Or even stranger, everyday life in science, as when a space station inhabitant has to let the cat out, or why certain labs can’t have casual Fridays.
In short, I love his work, because it makes me laugh and think, and you should check it out.

Gauld's comics continue to be delightful. I love graph and chart jokes; that's probably a great sign of whether you'll enjoy his science cartoons right there. If you like newspaper comics, these are probably closer in tone to Non-Sequitur than, say, Zits, but in my opinion also much funnier--I actually laughed aloud once. Gauld also puts in regular bits of representation into his works, which is much appreciated (this scientist is Black, that one wears a hijab, plenty are women; the art style precludes much more).
Emma T, Librarian
I always love Tom Gauld's work, and this book is no exception. A lot of funny, poignant comics that are extremely relatable in today's changing world.
Heather C, Librarian
Collection of funny, absurd, and absurdly funny comics about science and scientists. I love Gauld's space style with stick figures.
