Description

In this volume, the fourth in the Heart of Christian Faith series, Alister E. McGrath looks at the Holy Spirit, human nature, the doctrine of grace, and the place of the church in the Christian life. Full of stories and helpful illustrations, these easy-to-read devotional books offer spiritual consideration of the difference that our belief in God makes to the way in which we think about ourselves and the world. With one volume remaining, McGrath's series will define "mere Christianity" to a new generation for many years to come.

The Church is a community of believers, a colony of heaven on earth, a place in which the Spirit of grace (Zechariah 12:10) dwells. In its worship and prayer, the Church speaks the language of heaven. Although we live on earth, we observe the customs and values of our real homeland. Christians thus live in two worlds and must learn to negotiate their boundaries.

This study is a reflection of the Holy Spirit, Human Nature and the church. In looking at the statements of The Apostles’ Creed and Nicene Creed, we can gather a better understanding of God’s purpose and redemption. Instead of creating a new “Christianity”, we can look to the word and how the church thru the creeds came to an understanding of worshiping God in Spirit and Truth.

I personally appreciate the creeds and would like to see more churches refer to them in their worship. Alister E. McGrath gives wonderful insight in the study of the creeds that I have not experienced. It is in the creeds the universal church is identified as the true church even though we have many denominations. With the one Gospel there is one church. The church is for all who are drawn to God. One word that has always thrown me in the creeds is “catholic” and some while reading will omit this word but the meaning according to McGrath is because it extends through all the world, from one end of the earth to the other; and because it teaches completely, and without any omissions, all the doctrines that ought to be known to humanity concerning both things that are visible and invisible and things that are earthly and heavenly; and because it brings all kinds of people-whether rulers or subjects, learned or ignorant under the influence of true piety; and because it universally treats and cures every kind of sin, whether committed by the soul or the body; and possesses in itself every kind of virtue which can be named relating to words, deeds or spiritual gifts of every kind.

The above statement is the grace of God for all. Christianity is not a solitary religion and our commitment to the Christian should be primary and our allegiance to a specific denomination (or even church home) as primary.

Have you ever thought about how significant that we are adopted into the family of God? Adoption brings us divine privileges, cancels our debts, a receiving of inheritance and a belonging to the family of God.

With this study it is not simply about believing or understanding but the renewal power of the Grace of God in the Holy Spirit and the Work of Jesus the Son.
