Truly terrified this is a slow burn that shakes your very bones. It's terrific, terrible and tragic and kept me reading to all hours, scared of every creak and shadow. It's also set in Ireland where ancient curses and shadows haunt the darkness.

Possibly the creepiest and most disturbing AM Shine novel yet.

"Grace" is a thirty-something woman, whose life is suddenly upended when she discovers her birthmother has died and left her a house on an isolated island off the west coast of Ireland. She barely remembers her mother, having been adopted at an early age, but she feels drawn to the island, and so sets off to say her goodbyes to a woman she never knew. Arriving on the island, she is immediately struck by the surly and inbred community of islanders, and the distinct lack of children on the island.

Very quickly she is drawn into a dark and frightening environment, where people have secrets, fears, and suspicions which grow as she learns more about the terrible events of thirty years ago.

As with his previous books, the author beautifully paints his story against the bleak, wild and unforgiving backdrop of rural Ireland - this time even creepier, as it's a wild and isolated island. There's also ancient evil, bad people, weak people and good people. There's a priest with a hidden past, villagers held together by a dark secret, and a pub which holds its own share of secrets. Each character is well developed, so we're invested in their fates, even as their motives are laid bare. As the story unfolds, Grace struggles to uncover the biggest secret, and to escape the fate her parents tried so hard to avoid thirty years ago. There's a scattering of flashbacks which fill in details nicely, and tease the inevitability of certain people's fates.

"Grace" is based on the Scots/Irish legend of the Bodach - a malevolent spirit which often appears as an old man and which which steals away children from their homes. Here the author has added in a community of people in an isolated community, which will ticks every folk horror fan's boxes.

I love A.M. Shine books and how they're based around Irish mythology and folklore, there are so many creepy and scary and interesting folklores to choose from so I hope he never stops. 'Grace' was atmospherically scary and slow burn creepy until you're kept awake wanting to finish but feeling terrified

Grace is a dark, atmospheric dive into Irish folklore, where ancient myths twist into visceral, body-horror nightmares. I loved it!

A. M. Shine has excelled at crafting a haunting setting—damp, eerie, and genuinely dreadful. The horror is both physical and psychological, rooted in the land and its secrets.

The folk elements are rich and unsettling, evoking a timeless fear of the otherworldly. However, multiple POVs slightly weaken the impact. The characters all seem to blur together at some points (I still don't know who Mary is). Still, for fans of folk horror and creeping unease, Grace is a chilling, memorable read.

Perfect for fans of: Andrew Michael Hurley, Benjamin Myers and Michelle Paver.

When Grace receives a mysterious phone call about her unknown birth mother, she finds herself heading to the small island of Croaghnakeela. It is a strange island, with secretive residents, suppliers that won’t set foot on land, and no children at all…

Once again, A.M. Shine cements himself as a master of Irish folk horror. His descriptions and use of multiple POVs allow the story to slowly unfold in unexpected ways, and really ramps up the tension. The horror and suspense build slowly, with small chills that creep down your neck like rain drops that build to an intense storm in the finale.
There are some very sweet moments in this story, some unexpected twists, and a lot of Shine’s trademark use of dread-inducing folklore that requests the reader stretch their imaginations in a heart-stopping, adrenaline-fueled nightmare against an unseen/unstoppable foe.
The characters are generally likeable, warm, and complex. I loved Grace, and the clever way in which she leads the reader to the unexpected. This was not the book I thought it would be, and I loved Grace that Shine surprises me every time. Do I think this is his best? No, The Watchers still holds that title, and I felt the ending of Grace was a little rushed. But does this cement my belief that A.M. Shine is a master of Irish folk horror? Yes. Yes it does

Grace is my first experience with A.M. Shine’s work—and it definitely won’t be my last. From the very first chapter, I was pulled into a chilling, atmospheric story that lingers in your thoughts long after the final page.

What sets Grace apart from other horror thrillers is how well-rounded and realistic the characters are. They feel like people you know—or could know—which only heightens the tension as the story unfolds. Every decision, every bit of dialogue, feels grounded in the real world, which makes the eerie elements hit even harder. The Bodach is a frightening, and deranged creature that takes pleasure in its killing.

It’s also one of those rare books that you can see playing out on screen. The pacing, setting, and suspenseful build-up feel tailor-made for a film adaptation. I can almost guarantee this will be a movie in the future—and if it is, I’ll be first in line.

If you’re a fan of intelligent horror with sharp writing and deeply human characters, Grace is a must-read. A.M. Shine is clearly a rising star in the genre, and I’m already adding his other books to my list.

Grace returns to the island of her birth after the death of her birth mother. A place where the inhabitants harbour secrets and guilt decades long.

This is a grim look at what people are prepared to do for a better life as part of folk horror. It explores the complexity of the human character and while some areas of the plot needed greater detail in my opinion ( the orphanage) this was a great read.

No spoilers so this will sound vague but I hope this is the start of a series due to the source of the creature.

First of all, may I just give the biggest thanks to Zoe Giles, Marketing Manager for Head of Zeus, for inviting me to read Grace, via NetGalley. I absolutely did not expect it, and was thrilled when I received the email, as a longterm fan of A.M. Shine's work. Now, on to the actual review.
I adored this. I adored this even more than the Watchers, and that's saying a lot.

I wasn't entirely certain about it at first, not really knowing what I was going to get into. But, once Grace set foot on the island, and I got a glimpse of what I was strapping myself in for, I was sold.

It's definitely not for the faint of heart, and if you scare easily it will definitely keep you up at night. But, if you like horror, especially horror based on Irish folklore & mythology, this is definitely the book for you.

Family secrets come to light, a terrible evil has been disturbed and she will find herself dragged back into a living nightmare that threatens to engulf you whole.

I was so ecstatic when it was reviled that A. M. Shine has a new book coming up next year, and to be approved for the ARC a few weeks later felt like I’ve received the grace of God /pun intended/.
I will keep my review tamed, because there are good twists that can be easily given away. I didn’t know the plot at all but still had some expectations base on Shine’s previous works. I am so happy to report that this book is indeed everything I hoped for – rich Irish folklore, unsettling atmosphere, flawless prose, unexpected twists, and pure horror, just as I like it.
This book was very emotionally charged thanks to the distinct and flawed characters, for which I still cared about. Let me just tell you I got actual goosebumps on 64% and I couldn’t predicted this twist even if I was actively trying to. I was just enjoying reading, being on that island with the islanders, which was so scary and sad at the same time. I loved that we got a short perspective from almost everyone, but my favorite character is most definitely Father Richard.
Another big positive for me was the body horror, so visceral and actually terrifying, this is what was lacking for me in the last Shine book – Stay in the light. But here it was done exceptionally well. This book fits right into the world of The Watchers and Stay in the light, without being a sequel. I could absolutely picture these events taking place during the same time as the ones in the previous two books took. Also, the setting reminded me so much of one of my favorite TV series - Midnight mass.
If you liked the previous works of the author I can absolutely recommend you this book as well. Even if you’ve never read from him before, this could be a really good starting point. Since I’ve read all of his published works, I think this one is absolutely sharing the top spot with The Watchers. I couldn’t pick which is the better book, as they are both an amazing folk horror and I have an emotional attachment to both of them.

Shine is an autobuy author for me.
Here, as with all his books, he hits just the right notes of creepy, then ratchets it up with a sprinkle of horror.
It all starts innocently enough, but certainly doesn't end that way.
Dark and atmospheric, and a very good read.
Exactly what I expect from this author.

Grace by A.M Shine. Oooh this book was so different! I loved it. It’s about Grace, a woman who gets summoned to a strange little island off the coast of Ireland when she gets a mysterious phone call. The ferry operator won’t even step foot on the island, so she’s a bit apprehensive about why this is. Grace was adopted when she was 4 years old, and this little island had something to do with that… something sinister… because there hasn’t been a child born on that island for 30 years, and it seems she was lucky to escape. There’s definitely something evil afoot and as the story unfolds it gets creepier and creepier. I enjoyed the ancient evil, there’s something very scary about a force that can’t be reasoned with. This is a slow burn mysterious horror, the uneasiness sneaks up on you. Lots of suspicious characters that had you second guessing yourself.

4.5💫 Haunting, tense and atmospheric, this gothic folk horror rooted in Irish myth and legend is one for reading with the lights on.

What begins with ghostly knocks on the door of her little bookshop, quickly develops into a descent into Hell for Grace as she heads to Croaghnakeela, the small island off the coast of Ireland where she was born before she was sent to the mainland and put up for adoption.

Following the news of her biological mums death, she heads home, to the island shrouded in mystery and deep-rooted secrets, and Grace quickly discovers that some secrets should be left buried.

Multiple POVs made this book a little confusing at times as I struggled to get my head around who’s who, but this was a really enjoyable and aptly eerie read with a wholly unexpected ending. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an eARC of this book!

If you like your reads creepy, brooding, grim, hopeless and claustrophobic, then Grace is the book for you. I do, and I adored being led by the hand under gloomy skies of grey across stark landscapes and into ancient lairs.

The tale starts off lightheartedly enough as we meet Grace, who runs what many of us would deem a dream shop of rare copies of books. A call from the blue informs her that the biological mum she never knew has died whose house and estate is bequeathed to her. It's on an island off the coast of Ireland.

Grace sets off to meet the priest of the island, who called her. However, the priest isn't privy to the evil secrets of the island and was under strict instructions to keep Grace away. And that's when things begin to take a darker turn. And darker. And more grim and WHAT THE HELL?

So oppressive at times it left me breathless, this book is perfect for dark nights with a candle burning and a glass of whiskey. Intelligently written (as we have come to expect from AM Shine), with twists and turns we simply do not see coming and a gradually tightening belt of foreboding and angst that pays off in dramatic and bloody ways.

An utter joy to read, I am so thankful for the opportunity to review this ARC.

A.M. Shine has quickly become one of my favourite writers, when I came across his Watchers series and I quickly want to pick up anything he puts out. Shine, well, shines when writing gothic horror, and is excellent with tone to create atmosphere, His characters are always charming (even when we need to hate them), overall, just excellent.

I simply know by now that when I open the pages of a book by A.M. Shine that I'm going to be mesmerised. The writing! The imagination! The imagery! The atmosphere! The suspense! This author takes a whisper of a folk tale and breathes life into it with such skill that it becomes one of those books that I both can't put down but don't want to finish. My words feel feeble just trying to describe how incredible this author's work is. The stunning cover illustrations don't hurt either.

A.M. Shine has quickly become an instant-read for me. I didn't look at a synopsis, just requested an ARC purely on faith in the author to deliver another story oozing with gothic folk horror, atmosphere, and gorgeous writing. I'm happy to say I was rewarded for my faith. Shine continues to deliver.

There's something in the way Shine crafts his sentences that pleases me in a way few authors can. His style is distinct and evocative, with the beauty and horror bleeding together in a messy marriage of prose. His writing just scratches an itch for me, to put it as mundanely as possible. While I can speed-read through many books without issue, with Shine I find myself slowing down and really immersing myself in his stories. A few scenes in particular were so brilliant in their tension and world-building that I could vividly picture those drafty houses, colourless landscapes, crumbling cliffs, and shadows in the fog. What a feast.

While the ending didn't quite reach the heights that were promised by the early outstanding chapters, I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy every second of my time with it. I finished this hungry for more and wishing I had discovered Shine later in his (hopefully decades-long) career so I'd have more of a back catalog to dive into next.

wow! another amazing book from A.M. Shine
this book had me hooked from the start, I love how I constantly feel on edge while reading and can feel the dread are terror coming from the book whilst I read. Grace is such a great story to follow and it has such a twist that it left me open mouthed at the end expecting there to be more...

There are no words for how excited I was to get the email with an invite to read and review this book, I've been patiently waiting for a new A.M. Shine book since I finished Stay In the Light, and I was not disappointed at all.

A.M. Shine knows exactly how to creep me out (in the best possible way), every single time, which is why he has become one of my favourite authors. But this book… Wow.

I left writing this review for a few days after I finished the book (which I could not put down) because I didn’t know how to put my thoughts about it into words, but it didn’t help; I still really don’t know how to explain it besides “Wow”. Everything about it is amazing. The writing, the characters, the setting, the plot; everything is just perfection.

If you like Gaelic folklore, eerie atmospheric settings, creeping horror, beautifully flawed characters, and twists you won't see coming; add this to your list asap. You won't regret it.

I can't wait to see what Shine comes out with in the future because I will be there for whatever it is!

If you are familiar with Shine's work, "The Watchers", "The Creeper" and "Stay in the light" you may be expecting rural horror tied to folklore and the landscape... I can confirm you won't be disappointed! I don't make it a secret that I am a big fan of Shine's storytelling and how he builds the atmospheric mood, so I was worried that I wouldn't love this book like I have the others. Thankfully I didn't have to worry, as GRACE lived up to expectations.
Grace is a modern Gothic horror novel rooted in Irish mythology, and follows the character Grace, a bookshop owner specialising in rare books, who returns to the isolated west-coast island of her birth after a mysterious phone-call, and an ancient evil is awakened.
Shine writes these characters stripping back the vulnerabilities and flaws and that makes them all the more realistic.
The writing is excellent as usual, as Shine is a master of prose. Every word feels chosen, every shadow deliberate. It is so vivid you can smell the salt, feel the fog and hear the waves crashing around the cliffs.
Grace will stay with me for a long time after reading, and i really hope he is thinking about a follow up!
If you're drawn to Gothic horror rooted in folklore and an atmospheric mood then this is for you.

Well, well, well…

Everyone knows I love a bit of A.M. Shine – so I was honoured to be given access to his fourth novel ‘Grace’ a whole six months before its publication date.

I had already organised my July reading but when this came along I couldn't say no to bumping it to the top of my TBR. And I'm so glad I did. Obviously.

It's a tale that drags you in immediately and keeps you pinned down throughout, especially when our main protaganist –adopted Grace – receives a mysterious phone call from Father O'Malley, who resides on the island of Croaghnakeela.

And so begins her journey to an island, where it seems no children reside – and (I'm quoting here) an island without children can't make much of a future for itself can it?

That's not the strangest thing about the island but I'll leave you to read a full synopsis in your own time…

‘Grace’ – compared to AM Shine's previous novels, is a slow-burner – but believe me it's all the better for it.

He builds a sense of foreboding and eeriness while introducing a frightening aspect of Irish folklore. There are things that go bump in the night and also some VERY unexpected twists (Maybe. I'm saying nothing!)

Shine also pulls off QUITE the Hitchcock during this book. I won't say which one though.

I am of course reviewing this from a digital copy but I cannot wait to get a physical copy in my hands to read it again and work out exactly what I may have missed from my first read. It's that kind of book where clues are everywhere – so pay close attention!

There's beautiful writing once again within these (digital) pages and some extremely clever reveals and plot progression.

And while not out and out horror in the splatter sense of the word (there's no man in a mask) – this will undoubtedly send shivery shivers down your cold, sweaty spine.

And as such, it deserves all your love when it's released next February.

Where do I start? What can I say about A.M. Shine that I haven’t said before. A.M. Shines writing is like a warm hug, around the neck. And wait is that hug getting tighter? Oh god no, oh what’s happening make it stop!

Grace is a superb entry into what I have cleverly coined AMSIFCU (A.M. Shines Irish Folklore Cinematic Universe), I don’t know if the books are linked, but it’s very plausible and there’s nothing I’d enjoy more than for them to cross over at some stage.

Grace takes place on the Isle of Croaghnakeela. A mysterious island off the coast of Ireland only spoken of in cautious whispers by mainlanders. no children have been born on the island in years and their only visitor is the weekly courier, that is until Grace gets a call that takes her to the island and without spoiling to much, lots of things go horrifically wrong, very quickly.

This book has everything, it has mystery, brutality, cats, betrayals, pints. All the things a girl needs. Being honest I didn’t find this book as scary as I did something like Creepers but I also found the plot a lot more engaging, the pacing is impeccable and the cast of characters Shine develops in a relatively short book is unique, well considered and likeable (in a fashion).

I always struggle to find a way to describe these books without spoiling it but if you like Demonic Possession Horror, Skinwalkers, Uncanny Valley, Thrillers, Gothic or Things that go bump in the night horror then this is right up your street.

An easy five stars for me every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Well done Mr Shine and Congratulations on what I’m sure will be a successful release.

Wow. I have not read a book by this author before and it was gripping, detailed and full of gothic horror. I loved the introduction to Irish Isle's and the horrific myths that haunt them. The characters were relatable and you felt both compassion and sadness all throughout. If you enjoy the show 'From' then this book will be right up your alley. I will definitely be buying the book once it releases and will be recommending to all.

Remember the scary stories that you told each other when you were young........that delicious tingle of terror running down your spine that made you look over your shoulder, stop and listen ..... you thought you'd grown up and left that behind. Seems you haven't. Seems it's been there all the time, Seems it's just been waiting out on a remote island for someone stupid to come and poke it with a stick.
A present day version of an Irish terror that you might not have heard of.....but that you won't forget.

I have loved every novel A.M Sine has produced and I was so very thrilled when I was lucky enough to get the uncorrected proof from Netgalley! I have to say that he’s done it again! Absolutely brilliant storyline that kept me guessing the whole way through! I loved the diverse characters and that everything was so very mysterious! This author has now become my automatic go to! Solid Five Stars!

Bleak, beautiful, and bone deep unsettling, Grace is folk horror at its finest. Through the windswept isolation of Croaghnakeela, an island cursed with no children for thirty years. Shine weaves a tale steeped in Irish myth and dread. I really liked The Watchers and its sequel, so was really hyped the Netgalley gave me access to this one. Grace is an interesting one to review, I’d describe the book as faster paced Stephen King. Set in an unpronounceable (Croaghnakeela) Island off the coast of Ireland, the story starts with Grace running a bookstore (instantly relatable) and surprised to receive contact revealing an inherited house on said island.
Right from the get go (well including the semi-typical horror prologue) the horror and tension is built masterfully, its obvious there are terrible secrets on the island, but no-one will speak of it. We are also introduced to a Young Priest who despite living on the island for several years hasn’t managed to crack the locals and has a few secrets of his own.
Shine has a skill in balancing writerly dread and more jump-scary immediate horror, and this book has plenty of both. I found the book quite hard to put down and was super invested in almost every single scene. Like a Stephen King story there is a real gaggle of locals to be introduced, but somehow Shine managed to trim the fat of the setting and you’re never bogged down in backstory, while still finding each character unique and interesting, some might not like that element, and I confess I would still read this book if it were twice the size!
There are a couple of twists in this tale which I suspect will turn some off – as always with an ARC review it’s a pain waiting for the full release and sufficient time has passed to discuss them but they are certainly very interesting and quite bold from a writing perspective.
In summary, SUPER enjoyed A. M. Shine’s Grace and very pleased to get a NetGalley copy.

If there's one word to describe 'Grace', it's atmospheric.

The story follows a woman named Grace who has forgotten everything about her early childhood. But after a call about the death of her birth mother, she returns back to the island of Croaghnakeela to find answers about her birthplace and family. Except the remote island holds their secrets, one that is deadly.

A.M Shine did an amazing job with setting the environment — an unsettling, bleak island that was just as void of life as it's residents, each with their own secrets hidden behind the disturbing truth. The story blends gothic horror that gives the reader a claustraphobic feeling of being watched no matter where you go, and genuine heartfelt themes that goes into themes of human behaviour of loneliness and helplessness.

For the whole time, this story just screamed Lovecraftian inspiration to me, but with a tasteful mix of Irish mythology, and a central evil that can't be reasoned with. You have no idea who's going to survive at the end.

You think you know who's leading the story at first, however it punches you in the gut when you least expect it and flips the narration upside down, leading to plot twists that took me off guard in it's fast-paced narrative.

This was my first novel from this author, and I'll absolutely be looking into his other works in the future.

Shine is slowly becoming one of my favorite authors. Grace was no exception to the brilliance of this horror author. I enjoyed it very much!

Wow, what an amazing read! I absolutely loved Grace. The fact that it’s set on the west coast of Ireland, on a remote, lonely island makes it such a perfect book to start the autumn with. The scary gothic horror mixed withtraditional Irish mythology pulls you right in.

The story is full of old folk tales and legends, and A.M. Shine does such a great job of making you feel like you’ve stepped into a different world. It’s the kind of book that makes you forget everything around you and get lost in the magic and mystery of the story. It's a real page turner.

But what I also loved is that it’s not just a fantasy or folk story, it’s also a really interesting reflection on society, touching on greed, money, and selfishness. It gives you a lot to think about even after you’ve finished it.
I recommend this book 100%!

I was so stoked to be approved for another A.M. Shine eARC. His books consistently hit that 4–5 star range for me, and 'Grace' was no exception. The atmosphere was perfectly eerie and the tension unrelenting. I was stressed the entire time, in the best possible way. Shine has an uncanny ability to make my skin crawl without ever resorting to cheap scares, and this book proves it once again.

I appreciated the deeper exploration of the characters’ backstories, though I sometimes found myself thinking “hurry up!” as the stakes grew higher near the end—in a good, panicked kind of way. Everything unraveled so fast, and I was completely absorbed. The ending had me in tears, leaving me staring at the ceiling in that stunned, heartbroken silence only a great horror story can create.

The island’s history is deeply unsettling, steeped in Gaelic folklore and the kind of dread that seeps into your bones. I honestly just wanted to know more about its dark past. This story cements A.M. Shine as one of my favourite modern horror authors.

If you love folklore-infused horror, emotional gut punches, and that creeping sense of doom that never lets up, 'Grace' is for you.

From the blurb, "Grace" by A.M. Shine sounded like it had some of my favorite mystery tropes - a perpetually damp and freezing island in the middle of nowhere with a mistery which sullen and shady locals won't talk about? All it was missing was a former big city detective with recent trauma he won't speak about and we were cooking!
What I found instead was... some of my favorite horror tropes. Seriously: gothic + folk horror, Irish mythos and a definite lovecraftian flavor permeating the whole story, this book is evidence that there's cosmic horror away from Providence.

From a craft perspective I have only positive comments: the characters are fleshed out, complex and likeable (the ones we're supposed to like, at least), the Big Bad is believable and terrifying (even if its origin story requires some stretch of suspension of disbelief), and the overall ambience is extremely well crafted. My favourite detail is the depth of the side characters, no matter how minor: every villager here has had their dreams and hopes withered and squashed by terrible circumstances - and we get to find out about those dreams: what they wanted, who they were before darkness stopped their future in its tracks. They're not background noise and it's hard to not empathize at least a little with them (except with the ferryman, seriously, f*** that guy).
This is my first A.M. Shine but for sure not the last.

I discovered A.M. Shine's work during the spooky season last year and quickly became a fan after reading both The Watchers books. I even enjoyed the movie adaptation. This year, I was lucky to receive an ARC of Grace and went in completely blind, knowing it would be great, and it absolutely was.

From the first page, the story hooked me with its eerie island setting off the coast of Ireland. The atmosphere is thick with mystery and tension, and Shine's writing is once again outstanding. It is a masterclass in efficient storytelling, fast-paced, sharp, and never wasting a word.

Though it is a relatively short book, the cast feels rich and real, giving the story weight and high stakes. By 30 percent, I was completely immersed, desperate to learn what the islanders were hiding. The questions kept piling up, and even the supposed good guys had secrets. The villain is truly unique, and once their motives became clear, I got actual chills.

At around 66 percent, I had to put it down for a breather, but I did not want to stop reading. The tension and atmosphere had completely pulled me in.

Grace gave me the same vibes as Midnight Mass with its isolated community, creeping dread, and questions about faith, guilt, and survival. It is haunting, emotional, and beautifully written, the perfect spooky season read.

Terrifying and masterfully written, A.M. Shine's vivid prose will undoubtedly cause nightmares. If you're searching for a folky horror book with mysteries hidden just out of sight and a lingering sense of dread, then this is the one for you. Full of beautiful sentences, and packed with tension, this is one I'll remember long after the final page.

A.M. Shine's latest book "Grace" did not disappoint. Full of folk horror and Irish mythology, the author manages to create a sense of claustrophobia and mystery in this deeply disturbing book about an island and how they attempt to satisfy the unwanted visitor. Highly recommend.

An awesome gothic horror that did give me the creeps. Just thinking about a small island with no kids around gives me the chills.
It was a great read and to learn about an Irish folklore.
