John Cantwell AO served in combat duty in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, as the director of strategic operations of the multinational forces in Iraq in 2006, and as the commander of Australian forces in the Middle East in 2010. He has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his 'inspired leadership, deep commitment to his people and superior performance on operations'. Since his retirement Major-General Cantwell has lectured on leadership and military affairs and supports several organisations for wounded and emotionally damaged veterans. His best-selling book Exit Wounds was shortlisted for the Australian autobiography of the year in 2013.
