Description

He just stares at me, his eyes full of infinite sadness. “But you won’t be able to love me the way you did before, Erin. It’ll never be the same.”

Seventeen-year-old Erin Morgan has fallen head over heels for Drew Connor, the new guy in her small North Carolina town. It’s not long, however, before a relapse in Drew’s mental illness rocks their seemingly perfect relationship to its very core.

Reeling from the fallout, Erin turns to the comfort of her loving family and her two lifelong best friends. Yet even their support and sense of humor might not be enough to save her from the whirlwind of her junior year . . . especially when those relationships are also changing.

Add drunken confessions, a misguided spying mission, and shocking revelations to the mix, and soon Erin’s own mental well-being is in jeopardy.

Though she comes to expect the unexpected, nothing prepares her for the fateful late-night encounter that sends her already teetering world into orbit.

Her memaw has always said life’s full of surprises, but can Erin survive the ups and downs, or will the ride pull her and Drew under?

He just stares at me, his eyes full of infinite sadness. “But you won’t be able to love me the way you did before, Erin. It’ll never be the same.”

Seventeen-year-old Erin Morgan has fallen head over...

It was a great story. I really enjoyed the characters, and I’m looking forward to the sequel. I would recommend this book for middle and high school students, as well as adults. I am always looking for a good escape, and this is a captivating story about teenagers and the relationships, fun, and often very real problems that they deal with.

This book caught my attention within the first few sentences. The characters and their relationships in the book are authentic and mirror the intricacy of real-life interactions. This book is a perfect read for teenagers and adults.

Had a blast reading this book! Quickly fell in love with the characters and their stories (and also their love story!) Definitely check it out!! Absolutely 5⭐️❤️

I really enjoyed this as a opening chapter to the First Burning Bright series, it was an engaging storyline and was hooked from the first page and thought the elements worked well overall. I enjoyed getting into the world and how the characters were used in this storyline. I was invested in what was happening and left me wanting to read more in this world and from Kelly Bondurant.

i definitely felt a little nostalgia slump reading this book for both and good and very not so good reasons. reading more young adult books lately has given me such an open eyed view on really how different your thinking as at that age. you often roll your eyes and think "nah im grown up", "dont treat me as if im young and dont KNOW" and then you become and adult, older or older and you realise you truly did think differently in those times. thats not a dig or jibe. you just do. and its both good and bad in various ways.
so when i read these books i can see how they can relate to us oldies but also are key to those younger days.
i felt this as i was reading this book. and now i want to make it clear that doesn't make it lesser than, immature or anything. it simply means there are key aspects to it where you think gosh poor young people, and know it will hit differently for them.
but besides all that i still loved it lol. it was written in that gentle way so the themes that hit both hit in an acceptable way but also with enough traction that it makes you stop and think. its emotional, gentle and tender writing so it draws you right into the story and the characters you are reading about.
a great book from Kelly, done really well with such capturing chapters it had me turning page after page.

This book surprised me in a wonderful way!

What starts as a charming small-town romance quickly becomes much deeper. Erin and Drew’s story is not just about first love; it explores mental health, the challenges of growing up, and the heartfelt ache of loving someone who’s going through a tough time.

Drew’s relapse genuinely affects their relationship. Erin’s challenge to support Drew while finding her own way is written with care and warmth—it really resonated with me. Many lines felt relatable and real.

With a bunch of supportive yet imperfect friends, a strong family connection, and those cozy small-town vibes, this book becomes more than just a YA contemporary. It’s an emotional journey about healing, resilience, and the bittersweet transition to adulthood.

My favorite elements are:
- Honest mental health representation
- A sweet and realistic love story
- Genuine portrayal of emotional exhaustion
- Beautifully written—it’s both heavy and hopeful

If you like heartfelt young adult stories that deal with tough issues but still give you hope, I highly recommend this one!
