Description

Would you like to eat termites and giant land snails? Perhaps you might enjoy some durian fruit that tastes like a mixture of custard, cheese, and onion? Or maybe you would enjoy a cup of warming tea made from water, tea leaves, salt, and yak milk butter?

In this beautiful photographic book, young readers will meet children from around the world and discover the many different foods they eat.

  • Readers will learn all about colorful bento boxes that Japanese moms make for their children's school lunches.
  • They will join an Indian family to make homemade sweets for Diwali and join Muslim families for a special iftar meal during Ramadan.
  • And, in a sensitively handled section, they will learn that many children around the world have nothing to eat.
  • The book includes a world map that pinpoints where every story in the book comes from.

Supported with stunning, detailed photos, this book is an engaging nonfiction read and a fascinating exploration of different foods, traditions, and customs.

Food Around the World is a great educational read that is a part of the “Welcome to My World” series. The book has beautiful, full-color photographs of children eating the foods mentioned in their respective countries. My kids (ages 3, 6, and 8) got a kick out of the hunting and gathering people who eat exotic foods like turtles, snails, and caterpillars in African rainforests. They learned about terrace farming in mountainous regions of the world during homeschool, but had not seen an actual example so it was interesting to see the rice plants growing in flooded rows. The importance of the Yak in Tibet for meat, milk, and fuel was amazing and the sample Japanese bento boxes with characters made out of food put my lunches to shame. The glossary and index are super helpful. This book made me interested in incorporating the rest of the series into my homeschool curriculum. Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to share and review this title with my children.

It's amazing how much variety there is in this short picture book. So many different places, people, and different kinds of food! The illustrations were perfect, very kid friendly and fun.

This is a concise non-fiction picture book about cultural food habits around the world, touching briefly on food insecurity and religious traditions with food. I think this would work well as a read-aloud or for intermediate readers who are beginning to read to learn but need a lower level of reading.

I recommend this book for schools and libraries.
