Description

From the author of Small Stories: A Perfectly Absurd Novel, shortlisted by the Chanticleer International Book Awards, 19 Doors ranges far and wide, diving into magical realism and science fiction, then adding a dash of steampunk and surrealism for extra flavor. The collection of short stories and flash fiction ricochets from the poignant to the comically absurd, each tale a work of imaginative fiction.

• A community remembers the lives they have yet to live.
• An intergalactic tour bus arrives in Hollywood … Montana.
• A shopping network super-fan relives every infomercial scenario he watches.
• The first sentient being in the universe applies for a job as a sous chef.
• A preternatural wind comes to collect a long-owed debt.

Through 19 Doors, we are immersed in the unraveling lives of characters who are just like us and nothing like us. Whether they succeed or succumb, conform or rebel, we are treated to a compilation of stories that are frequently fraught, often fun, and always fantastic.

Thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing me with an eARC.

This is one of the most enjoyable collections of short stories I've read. I usually read horror/thriller or sad short stories to feel the impact but this one was quite a feel-good collection. Each of these magical realism stories had a strong impact despite being short (Honestly I would read all of them even if they were rewritten into novels or novellas -- they definitely had the potential). My favourite ones were Borrowed time, The untethered house and Davy Jones' locker. I also liked the way both the endings of Davy Jones' locker were in the book, so similar and yet so different. I would recommend this to anyone looking to open 19 Doors to 19 different heartwarming stories and worlds (literally).

19 Doors is a wildly imaginative collection of short stories that swing between laugh-out-loud funny and quietly heart-wrenching. O’Keefe’s ability to blend humor with poignancy makes for an engaging, unpredictable read. Each story feels like stepping through a new portal into a world that is clever, quirky, and often surprisingly tender.
That said, I sometimes wished a few of the shorter pieces had been fleshed out more. While the premises were fantastic, extra depth would have helped me connect more deeply with the characters and their journeys.
Still, the variety, originality, and voice make this collection stand out. O’Keefe has a talent for finding both the absurd and the deeply human in every situation, and 19 Doors is proof of just how fun and moving short fiction can be.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book!

19 Doors is a wildly imaginative collection that blends magical realism, science fiction, surrealism, and even a touch of steampunk into short bursts of creativity. It is a is a smart, quirky, and imaginative read. If you enjoy short fiction that isn’t afraid to be both thoughtful and absurd, this one is definitely worth stepping through.

19 Doors by Rob Roy O’Keefe is a mixed bag of short stories—some magical, surreal, and immediately gripping, others leaning much heavier into hard-core sci-fi (which isn’t really my comfort zone). I can absolutely appreciate the craft, though, and the way each “door” opens into something unexpected.

A few pieces really stood out for me, especially the one with the original take on Davy Jones-clever, atmospheric, and memorable. Others will definitely land better for readers who live and breathe sci-fi, but overall, this collection shows real imagination and range.

Not every door was for me, but the ones that worked, worked really well.

Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the digital copy for review!

This anthology has everything: haunted infomercials that taunt the viewer, a locker that leads to a "genius lab", a troll that can be bought by lending him your truck, mundane superpowers, magic gloves, houses with wanderlust...and more!

I really enjoyed this anthology! It is probably one of the best I have read. It is hilarious, engaging and quirky. It is written in a humorous but easily understood way. It reminded me of the reading equivalent of what watching a limited series anthology would be like. Everyday people go through weird situations, some being humorous, while others heartbreaking. Some stories make you laugh-out-loud and others make you cry.

As for my favorite story, it is hard to choose, because I enjoyed all the stories in their own way, but I really loved "We Were Beautiful". No spoilers, but it was SUCH a good story.

Ending thoughts: This anthology is a GREAT bunch of stories. If you are questioning whether you should give it a try, I recommend reading it. Some of the stories I know will stick with me for a long time.

I LOVED this book! Thank you to NetGalley for the digital copy for review!

I liked the pacing of each story, and how creative the world building was. The characters are all fun to read about and the whole things is just plain entertaining. I really liked this book from the start when the janitors were going to each room, and the one was "watching" the broom. It reminded me of the energy/premise of "A Sorcerer's Apprentice" and immediately hooked me.

I also enjoyed Davey Jone's portion of the story, and the whole premise of going through the locker into a secret society. This whole anthology is just plain fun and quirky. I can't wait to get a hard copy of this when it gets released! I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves stories in the "magical realism" or sci-fi genres. It's got a bit of everything for readers alike!
