Description

Roxbury: Return to a Ghost Town is my second book about an abandoned and lost Settlement in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley. Lost in the Woods: The Lure and History of Roxbury was written and published in 2002. Its success and popularity generated the second book, published this past May. Old and abandoned settlements seem to attract a large number of people. There are hundreds of these lost and sometimes forgotten places across our nation. Everybody has a "Roxbury" that they have heard of or maybe have seen and always want to know more about. Nova Scotia's Roxbury just happens to be one of those places that has attracted interest from the general public and the media.

The book traces the history of the area from the early Mi'kmaq through to the present day where the Provincial government has designated the Settlement as a Provincial Park Reserve.

Roxbury was first settled by French Acadian. The first Loyalist, Thomas Durland, carved our a meager existence in the early 1800's. The settlement flourished with lumbering and mixed farming until the early 1900's. It became, more or less, a ghost town in the 1920's. The only remnants today are stone walls, foundations and two graveyards. In its prime, Roxbury was home to twelve families with a population of sixty seven.
