Description
When a coming-of-age, prehistoric boy's childhood best friend mysteriously disappears after he is forced to cope with his parents' untimely deaths, Geb vows to do whatever it takes to find Ari.
Joining forces with his older sister, Lunah, Geb and three friends depart their Lake Tana home on a treacherous journey. Every bend in the Nile brings strange new experiences, testing their close bonds. Few clues to Ari’s whereabouts arise, compounding Geb’s desperation as they travel farther into unknown lands.
A mysterious star leads them to a place where the Nile merges with an endless sea. There in the delta swampland, they meet humans with strange powers unlike anything they have ever experienced before. Geb—who has never been the strongest, tallest, or the bravest—comes to believe that he alone must battle for Ari’s freedom against Seth: a usurper and brutal tyrant later revered as the ancient Egyptian god of chaos, storms, and the desert.
But is Geb really alone?
***
The story begins in modern times with Ben, a university student who embarks on an international flight to Cairo, Egypt to research the mysterious origin of the Great Sphinx of Giza. He meets a fellow Cairo University student--Sofi--on the plane, and shares that his curiosity about the world comes from stories told to him by his beloved grandma during his youth. Sofi wants to hear Ben's grandmother's stories; perhaps they reveal more of the mystery than Ben and Sofi realize.
A Note From the Publisher
The main prehistoric character, Geb, is a young boy in the novel's first chapter. He quickly transitions to coming-of-age teen years.

Finding Ari by Amy Gunarich is a unique blend of historical fiction, fantasy, and adventure that takes readers on a journey stretching from modern-day Egypt back to prehistoric times.
The story opens with Ben, a university student traveling to Cairo to study the origins of the Great Sphinx. His chance encounter with Sofi, a Cairo University student, frames the narrative with curiosity, mystery, and the oral storytelling traditions passed down through Ben’s grandmother. But the heart of the novel lies in the ancient tale of Geb—a boy who, after the tragic loss of his parents and the disappearance of his childhood friend Ari, vows to find answers no matter the cost.
What follows is an ambitious and imaginative journey along the Nile, where Geb, his sister Lunah, and their friends face danger, wonder, and the unknown. Strange new lands test their resilience and relationships, and a mysterious star leads them toward a fateful confrontation in the Nile Delta. Here, Geb finds himself up against Seth, the usurper who will become known as the god of chaos. Though Geb has never seen himself as the strongest or bravest, his courage and loyalty are tested in ways that reshape him into a true coming-of-age hero.
I especially enjoyed how the novel reimagines myth and history, weaving Egyptian gods into a narrative that feels both fresh and rooted in tradition. The prehistoric setting added a layer of realism and intrigue, and the journey itself reminded me of a mythic quest, full of danger, growth, and discovery. Though written for YA readers, there’s plenty here for adults who love ancient history, folklore, and adventurous storytelling.
Finding Ari balances action with heart, mystery with mythology, and delivers a creative reimagining of Egypt’s ancient past. It’s a captivating read for anyone drawn to adventure, Egyptian history, or coming-of-age tales with a touch of magic.
