Description
Full of creeping dread and suffocating unease, Dark Is When the Devil Comes is an atmospheric and chilling novel from Something in the Walls author Daisy Pearce.
The woods are known as the place to avoid. What goes in, doesn’t come out.
Hazel has been gone from her small hometown of Idless in the English countryside for years. Now returned in the wake of a traumatic divorce and crumbling personal life, her simple plans are to lay low at her parents’ vacated house, reconnect with her prickly sister Cathy, and slowly get back on her feet.
She's his captive but something has come home with her.
Cathy is surprised when Hazel doesn’t show. Their relationship strained from a fallout half a decade ago, she didn’t expect them to get back into a sisterly rhythm…though she hadn’t counted on Hazel bailing, either.
But something isn’t adding up. Other people in town whisper of a threat that can’t be shaken. The woods are known for being restless. And Cathy knows the old saying.
If you go looking for trouble, you just might find it.

I absolutely inhaled this book! It wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but in the best way possible... I don't think it is really necessarily a "horror" book, but it was still creepy, eerie. There wasn't a ton of gratuitous gore, which is an aspect of the book I was grateful for. I really specifically enjoyed the supernatural aspects of this novel, as well as the real life horror, the warnings. Remember kids- no matter how safe a person looks or acts, if they're strangers, you don't take rides from them! You never know what's lurking beneath the surface - that's true for everyone in this book, one way or another.
I, at times, was convinced that Hazel, our narrator, was losing her mind, and was delighted to realize so much more was happening than that. Hazel really surprised me with how intelligent she was and how well she was able to accomplish things, even while facing the unimaginable. Obviously, she made a very foolish mistake originally, but the way she was able to rectify things was pure reading gold.
I don't want to give much more away, but I will say that I live how Daisy Pearce writes. She's a very sensory-driven author. The atmosphere was appropriately claustrophobic and eerie, and really gave the actual story a firm foundation on which to be built. This was my second book by Pearce, and I fully expect to read more, in the future. Definitely worth giving this one a read!

Fantastic blend of mystery and horror. Fast paced, great characters, and a bit graphic at times. Daisy certainly knows how to write!
Bleak, gripping, and morally thorny in the best way. It doesn’t flinch or soften its edges. Mild gripe: the tone is relentlessly grim. Still enjoyed it!
I loved Something In the Walls, so I jumped at the chance to read this one! Dark Is When the Devil Comes has the pacing and tension of a thriller, with the creepy, haunted vibes of a horror story. It was so good, I finished it in one sitting! I will definitely be watching for more from Daisy Pearce!

Unexpectedly dark! I was immediately drawn into the psychological thriller aspect of this novel. But it is so much more. The relationships between the characters and their history together really drive the story. Highly recommended!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a chance to review Dark Is When the Devil Comes

Hazel's a mushroom scientist (yes really) who gets lured to some creepy farmhouse and ends up trapped in a basement. Simple enough premise; but Pearce layers in this folk horror, is-it-supernatural-or-not vibe that keeps you genuinely unsettled the whole way through.
It's fast, it's dark, and it doesn't let up. The villain could've used a bit more fleshing out but honestly by that point you're too stressed to care.
If you like your horror with a feminist edge and a side of creepy woods, give it a go. Just maybe not before bed. I look forward to the audio book!

Wow this was so creepy and unsettling and truly had me hooked from the beginning. I couldn’t put this down. The atmosphere and the way the author described all of the scenes made me feel like I was actually there.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martins Press for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is my third book by this author and I will always read anything this author publishes. This book is creepy and sticks to your bones and mind. It was fast paced and kept you wondering what is going on here and why.
If you want a good author that creeps you out this is for you! I highly recommend.
Dark Is When the Devil Comes is soaked in dread and sisterly side-eye from page one. The unraveling relationship between the sisters is the real villain here, and honestly? That’s what makes it work. The rotating POVs keep the tension humming, and the women actually feel distinct instead of copy-paste dramatic.
The first half flies. The second half… sprints to the finish line like it suddenly remembered it had somewhere to be. No loose ends, but the wrap-up feels a little too neat after all that delicious buildup.
I will start by saying that growing up I have always had a thing with not eating Mushrooms and I can now state with a positive statement that will continue forever.
I really enjoyed this book even though the first 1/2 of the book had me looking every which way and questioning who was real and what was just a figment of the imagination….. the strength of women to persevere in bad situations when they work together is wonderful!
