An inventive and romantic speculative novel about two women—a witch and an immortal demon—who make a Faustian bargain and are drawn into a cat-and-mouse chase across multiple lifetimes.
1592. Cybil Harding is a First Daughter. Cursed to bring disaster to those around her, she is trapped in a house with a mother paralyzed by grief and a father willing to sacrifice everything in pursuit of magic.
Miriam Richter is a creature of shadow. Forged by the dark arts many years ago, she is doomed to exist for eternity and destined to be alone—killing mortals and consuming their souls for sustenance. Everything changes when she meets Cybil, whose soul shines with a light so bright, she must claim it for herself. She offers a bargain: she will grant Cybil reincarnation in exchange for her soul.
Thus begins a dance across centuries as Miriam seeks Cybil in every lifetime to claim her prize. Cybil isn’t inclined to play by the rules, but when it becomes clear that Miriam holds the key to breaking her family curse, Cybil finds that—for the first time in her many lives—she might have the upper hand. As they circle each other, drawn together inescapably as light and dark, the bond forged between them grows stronger. In their battle for dominance, only one of them can win—but perhaps they can’t survive without each other.
Natasha Siegel has written an unexpected love story that feels both epic and deeply personal. Ambitious, gothic, and magical, As Many Souls as Stars is about the lengths we go to protect ourselves, our legacy, and those we love.
""Dark longing waltzes hand-in-hand with historical elegance in this hypnotic gothic tale."" — S.T. Gibson, author of A Dowry of Blood
""[A]n epic story of deep loneliness, tormented love, and one woman's quest to set herself free--no matter how many lives she must be born into."" — Sunyi Dean, bestselling author of The Book Eaters

I absolutely loved this novel and audiobook - the narrator Kristin Atherton does an amazing job!
I don't like to compare books to other books but... If you enjoy books by V.E. Schwab, Laura Steven, and Rachel Gillig, I think you'd love this epic, sapphic romantic fantasy.
Cannot recommend enough.
Thank you to the author, Natasha Siegel, the publisher William Morrow (via B&N 3467) for the physical ARC, and Harper Audio for the Audiobook ARC via NetGalley.
I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an audio ARC.
This book is absolutely stunning. It is beautifully written and emotional. The writing is gorgeous and flows very well. The characters are so well written. I loved following them and getting to know them and then reaching that ending. I loved how the relationship between the characters developed and evolved throughout the story. This book is amazing, beautiful, heart wrenching, and left me speechless with how good it is. I loved the narrator for this book as well. The narrator has a wonderful voice and is wonderful to listen to. This was a stunning dark fantasy romance that I left wanting more from and am looking forward to reading more works by this author.
Many thanks to William Morrow and Harper Audio for the preview. All opinions are my own.
This was an intoxicating story. Toxic lesbians in a cat and mouse game across time and magic with so much damage along the way. With hate and love balanced on a knife's edge, you really have no idea how this is going to end until the very last sentence. And that last sentence had me evil cackling in the best way.
Miriam and Cybil (in all her iterations) are a scorching hot combination that is so destructive, but you cannot look away. I stayed up way too late to finish this in one go. Kristin Atherton's narration is great if you prefer audiobooks. This is perfect for fans of Addie LaRue, Bury Our Bones, The Witch's Daughter, and Our Infinite Fates.
Good audiobook tone and voice.
Good for variety of ages and people.. interestesting/page turner form the beginning
More lyrical and beautiful than action filled 💛
Wow.
This was soooo unexpectedly good 😭😭😭
“I will not change my mind through fear alone.”
My freakin’ heart?!
If you love sapphic romance, I HIGHLY recommend this one. The way she edges a demon in multiple lifetimes is crazy work, but we love it and we’re here for every single second of it lmfao.
Literally— This tugged tf outta my heartstrings!!
“You can have as many souls as stars, my love, and all those lives will be as unhappy as the first.”
Gosh… The way this shattered me. This is honestly what I wanted Our Infinite Fates to give, no shade, but this was just so good 😩
I literally fell in love w/ each one of Cybil’s reincarnations, like each story had me invested!!
And rooting for BOTH of them!!
I just want them both to never leave each other 💔
Omg.
“I do not require your mercy, if you believe me a witch, then a witch I shall be.”
Miriam was so Mommy too, like I’d make all the deals w/ her. Take my soul fr lmfao!!
The way both of their characters develop was just so beautiful, I can’t take it 😭😭😭
The magic system mixed w/ a bit of alchemy also had me curious of the lengths they would go… The sacrifice they would make!! UGH, I love it lol.
“Before you, Rosamund Hearting. I had never known love, and I had never known regret. Though you’ve wounded me with these things, you’ve made me fallible. I’ll never forgive you for that, just as you will never forgive me.”
Overall, if you want to be emotionally devastated throughout multiple lifetimes, each one YEARNING for the next never to be the last… This is for you 🫵🏽
Kristin Atherton did a DAMN AMAZING JOB NARRATING THIS!! I’m a fan 🫶🏽
Grateful to NetGalley and Harper Audio for the ARC!
Miriam is a shadow, who survives by making deals with humans in exchange for their soul. In 1599, she meets Cybil and is fascinated with her, making a deal that reincarnates Cybil multiple times and igniting a centuries-long affair.
This was a perfect read for the start of spooky season and an entertaining Sapphic fantasy romance. The climax was cinematic and the story was haunting. I really enjoyed this! The narrator was spectacular.
