Description
Lizzie Borden took an axe...
We all know the rhyme. But behind the sing-song verse lies a mystery that has haunted true crime popular culture for over a century.
In 1892, the brutal axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden shocked the nation. Their daughter, Lizzie, stood trial in a case that gripped the public like none before it—an early true crime spectacle that still echoes through popular culture today. Was she an abused daughter pushed to the brink, a cold-blooded killer, or something even stranger?
The Lizzie Borden House Anthology is a chilling and provocative collection inspired by the most infamous unsolved murder in American history. Working in conjunction with the real-life Lizzie Borden House—now a Bed and Breakfast museum and paranormal hotspot—this licensed anthology explores the unanswered questions, shifting myths, and dark possibilities surrounding the case.
From feminist reimaginings to supernatural reckonings, from psychological horror to gothic suspense, these tales examine not just what happened that day in Fall River, but how the story of Lizzie Borden has taken on a life—and afterlife—of its own.
Perfect for fans of Shirley Jackson, True Crime, and American Horror Story, this collection blurs the line between history and horror, fact and folklore.
Because some stories refuse to die—and some houses never forget

As someone who has always been fascinated by the story of Lizzie Borden — from the infamous rhyme to the countless documentaries, books, and film adaptations — this anthology immediately caught my eye. The very idea of revisiting that chilling legend through a collection of dark, imaginative tales was irresistible, and I’m pleased to say it mostly lived up to my expectations.
The Lizzie Borden House Anthology brings together a range of authors who each explore the eerie and unsettling history surrounding Lizzie, her family, and that infamous house in Fall River. The result is a varied yet cohesive selection of stories that blend horror, gothic atmosphere, and psychological tension in all the right ways. Some tales lean heavily into the supernatural, conjuring ghostly presences and lingering spirits, while others focus on the human side of horror — guilt, grief, obsession, and the stories that houses themselves can tell.
The tone throughout is deliciously macabre, and the sense of place is wonderfully strong. The house itself feels like a living, breathing character: you can almost hear the creak of its floorboards, sense the shadows moving across the walls, and feel that ever-present weight of history pressing down on each page. It’s the kind of collection that makes you want to curl up on a stormy evening with a cup of tea and let yourself be completely immersed in its unsettling world.
While, as with most anthologies, a few stories resonated more strongly with me than others, the overall quality and atmosphere are impressive. Some authors experiment with modern settings, others stay close to the historical roots, but all manage to capture that haunting essence of the Lizzie Borden myth.
What I particularly appreciated was how the anthology balances the real and the imagined. It never loses sight of the tragic reality of the Borden case, yet it gives each writer the creative freedom to ask “what if?” — what if the house really was cursed? What if Lizzie wasn’t alone? What if evil leaves an imprint that time can’t erase? These questions give the collection a thought-provoking edge that lingers long after the final story.
A solid four stars from me. This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys haunted house fiction, gothic anthologies, or true-crime-inspired storytelling. It’s beautifully eerie, deeply atmospheric, and pays respectful homage to one of history’s most enduring mysteries.
