Description
Say “desert” and many folks will picture sand, clouds of dust, a smattering of cactuses, and perhaps a tenacious reptile or scorpion fighting for their thirsty lives. But Arizona’s Sonoran Desert breaks those barren stereotypes. Sonoran Desert Explorer, penned by expert staff at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, introduces curious readers and intrepid explorers to the myriad “biomes, animals, plants, geology, and cultures they may come across” when exploring this 120,000-square-mile expanse.
With over 180 fun profiles of wild flora and fauna observed in this expanse, 20 adventurous field trip options for all nature enthusiasts, and riveting and inclusive natural history insights, Sonoran Desert Explorer will reveal to many just how biodiverse and colorful this desert truly is.

This is a very good reference for learning about the plants, animals, climate and geography of the Sonoran Desert. With beautiful photographs and helpful maps and charts, readers can dive deep into various topics, and learn about how the climate is changing due to global warming as well as how various seasons will affect the temperature and habitats.
This would be very beneficial for anyone traveling to the southwest, as well as those who live there or are studying the area.
I highly recommend this book for libraries and museums.

Such a beautifully illustrated and fascinating look at the wonderful diversity of the Sonoran Desert.
I will continue to go back to this book as I am a fanatic about animals, nature, etc. The illustration was great, and the book was informatic. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
I loved this book! I love the Sonoran desert, saguaro national park is one of my favorite national parks, so I was very excited when I saw this!
First, I love the photography in this and I love that there are as many pictures as there are. You get to see the landscape plus almost every plant and animal talked about, and there are a lot.
Second, there is so much information in this! I think it’s great for any age range and anyone who loves nature, the desert, plants, or wildlife. You will be overflowing with desert knowledge when you finish this.
Finally, the layout/setup/formatting is really well done and it’s organized in a way that makes a lot of sense.
I loved this and would love to have a physical copy someday!
If you want to explore the Sonoran Desert, this guide is a great start! I loved all of information that was presented as I think more people should know more about the desert as a Sonoran Desert resident.
The field trips listed at the end are fantastic. I added a few to my weekend trip list for this year. I’m excited to dive into more naturalist expeditions in my home state!
I would recommend this book to anyone who has any interest in desert life, whether it’s wild or historic!
The Sonoran Desert Explorer is an in-depth guide to all things Southern Arizona. As someone who grew up in the area, it was informative even for me! It is well-organized and includes lots of topics, such as animals, weather, and locations. Although it is listed as a children's nonfiction book, it is very text dense and would either need to be used a resource guide or broken up into many sittings. It could definitely still be helpful for adults or anyone visiting the area. I loved all of the included photographs!
Thanks to Timber Press and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
