"Trailblazers,” set in the late 1970s when women were taking a more active role in the military, picks up where “Refined by Fire” left off. West Point cadets Lori and Trish meet lieutenants Anne, Maura, and Amelia as they experience their six week Cadet Troop Leader Training in the active duty military in West Germany. As the cadets gain a greater understanding of life in the military, the Maura and Anne mentor Lori and Trish through the potential minefield of earning the respect of their sometimes-stubborn male peers. In the end, Trish and Lori learn much more than military principles and take their newfound confidence back to West Point, even more determined to make it through to graduation.

A West Point graduate, she is also the mother of three Kansas University graduates and currently teaches for Walden University in the Doctor of Business Administration Program. Ruth VanDyke is a retired Army Chemical Corps officer and one of the early female ROTC graduates. She currently resides in Tampa Florida and served as a liaison officer from the Joint staff, to US Special Operations Command, before retiring to write full time.
