Description

Originating in the early twentieth century, the Divine Mercy devotion of St. Faustina Kowalska is one of the most celebrated of all Catholic devotions. In this, their first book, Catholic bloggers and speakers Michele Faehnle and Emily Jaminet break open the history, practices, and prayers associated with the devotion, guiding busy moms to receive God’s message of Divine Mercy and pass it on to others through their words, deeds, and prayers.

In her famous Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul, St. Faustina Kowalska recorded a series of visions of Jesus where he revealed the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and promised that anything can be obtained with the prayer if it is compatible with his will. St. John Paul II formally established the Divine Mercy devotion and canonized Faustina in 2000. The Marians of the Immaculate Conception are dedicated to spreading the Divine Mercy devotion; the foreword for this book was written by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, author of Divine Mercy Explained and 33 Days to Morning Glory.

In Divine Mercy for Moms, Michele Faehnle and Emily Jaminet, chairwomen of the Columbus Catholic Women’s Conference—one of the largest annual Catholic women’s conferences in the country—draw upon their own experiences to introduce you to St. Faustina and her five essential elements of the Divine Mercy message:

· * The image of the Merciful Jesus

· * The Feast of Divine Mercy

· * The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

· * The House of Mercy

· * Spreading the honor of Divine Mercy

With heartwarming stories and practical advice, this book reveals that mercy is not just a gift to be received in the confessional but a spiritual resource that strengthens those who extend themselves in word, deed, and prayer. Designed for personal or group study, Divine Mercy for Moms celebrates the infinite mercy of God and the role of Mary, the Mother of Mercy, in the lives of all believers.

The book also includes group study questions, prayers of mercy, and thirty reflections from the authors’ website, Mercy4Moms.

This book really touched deep in my heart. I´ve already read St. Faustina Diary many years ago and I pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy every day, but I´d never thought of the works of mercy the way displayed in this book. It´s just wonderful how we can do this in our daily lives and grow in mercy ourselves. The appendix also provide wonderful prayers and devotions.

Thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a simple and easy to follow guide for any woman (not just Moms) who wants to find meaning in her everyday life and share her Catholic faith with the people she encounters daily. The chapters cover the topics of St. Faustina, Apostle of Divine Mercy, Developing trust in Jesus through the Divine Mercy Devotion, Showing Mercy to our neighbor, The Corporal works of mercy, The Spiritual Works of mercy, and Mary, Mother of Mercy. Each one references a writing from St. Faustina's Diary and gives practical ideas to follow the lesson.
I am inspired to incorporate the Divine Mercy and the lessons into my daily life after reading the book and want to share it with other mothers.

Divine Mercy for Moms serves as a good introduction to people who are new to the devotion of Divine Mercy while also helping to deepen the faith for those who are Divine Mercy veterans. It’s a short, quick read for those who are wanting a nice dose of Divine Mercy reading and reflection, but it is really meant for deeper reading. It is the perfect book for moms in this Year of Mercy.

Each chapter contains a blend of personal reflections and useful facts written by either Michele or Emily. They take some pains to make sure that the reader can tell which author is writing when, and that can be a bit distracting, but not too bad. They really relate the work of this nun to the lives of everyday moms out in the world today.

Each chapter concludes with reflection questions and practical advice to apply the lessons of the chapter to your everyday life. The entire book concludes with a useful guide to group study of this book. I was unable to participate in a group study of this book, but I could easily see how such a study would be very enriching.

Moms are very important in passing on the faith and being a reflection of Christ in the world. This book helps as a tool for moms living out their vocation. As the quote from Fr. Gaitley on the cover says, “I hope you will read this book and help save the world.”

No review of this book can go without mentioning the website that the authors created to accompany the book. Divine Mercy for Moms the website is full of resources to help deepen your devotion and to reach out to other moms who are also trying to apply St. Faustina’s message of mercy to their daily lives.

I was able to read this book through my membership in NetGalley. Thank you Ave Maria Press for the opportunity. It is available now through your favorite bookseller.

For moms, consider the gentle, simple, and yet thorough, introduction to the Divine Mercy devotion: Divine Mercy for Moms: Sharing the Lessons of St. Faustina by Michele Faehnle and Emily Jaminet.

Divine Mercy for Moms offers a way for mothers to encounter Divine Mercy in a mother—specific way. The two authors, both moms, share many stories of their lives that aid a realistic and nitty-gritty understanding of how Divine Mercy can be understood and lived out in a normal mother’s life.

This small volume is an excellent primer to the devotion of Divine Mercy for those who have little knowledge of (or even interest in) the Divine Mercy devotion. But it’s also good for people like me, who love the Divine Mercy devotion, and pray the Divine Mercy chaplet, but have felt too daunted to read Saint Faustina’s diary. A friend was reading Saint Faustina’s diary in a book group, and she mentioned that it was “too much” to take in big chunks, but it’s difficult to know what to focus on.

That’s why one of my favorite parts of Divine Mercy for Moms is an appendix titled “Thirty Days of Mercy,” daily reflections on motherhood. Each day begins with a short, sentence-long excerpt from the diaries, and then a few questions, and a short prayer. What a great way to start a day, spending some quality time with one specific and very short quote from St. Faustina’s diary.
