Description
Set against the backdrop of a devastating forest fire, A Forest Begins Anew unfolds the life cycle of a particularly resilient ecosystem. As smoke jumpers leap from planes and pinecones eventually unseal from the heat of the fire, the story poetically weaves the effects of a forest fire into a vibrant tapestry that reveals a delicate balance between destruction and renewal.
Back matter containing fascinating facts and further reading portrays forest fires not just as destructive forces but as catalysts for growth and rebirth. With its lyrical rhyming text and breathtaking illustrations, A Forest Begins Anew honors nature’s ability to survive against the odds.

It's often hard to see the bigger picture and the good that comes from loss. Most see a forest fire as devastating. This book encourages children to look at wildfires with a different perspective. From the loss, comes growth and new life. I truly enjoyed the illustrations and colors of this picture book. This book is lovely. The foxes are my favorite.
What a beautiful book about a very timely topic: a forest growing back after a devastating fire. We have personally been through 2 forest fires so I know first hand how quickly the ecosystem regenerates. I think the focus on regrowth is a good reminder that forest fires are part of a required cycle of life for certain types of environments. MacKay's cutouts are luminous and perfect for this topic. The back contains more information and resources for further research. Because our community has been affected by a devastating fire, I will for sure be adding this to the elementary school library.
Thank you NetGalley for an advanced digital copy, all opinions are my own.
This children’s story is not only about forest fires, but it is also a metaphor for difficult times in our lives. The story’s rhyming makes this an engaging story for both lower and upper elementary students. The illustrations are beautifully done, depicting how forest animals, insects, plants and seeds react to wildfires. I like how the story also provides some scientific facts for the question, “Are wildfires good for the environment.” This is an excellent addition for a classroom, especially for a study of forest fires or the sequential actions that occur in nature.
What a beautiful book! As a wife to a forester that has listened to many explanations about why prescribed fire is important for growth, this book nailed it. Although the fire in this book was a result of natural causes, the message is the same. Fire helps to reset the forest and allow new growth from the destruction. I loved that the author included information at the end about why fire is necessary for a healthy forest. I also liked that the story took us through the fire starting, the efforts to control the devastation, and the rebuilding and regrowth that came from the ashes.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and Astra Publishing House for the advance copy of this title.
